  • A look back at Beau Jack...Abandoned as a youth, Jack found work at the Augusta National Golf Club as a shoe shine boy. Impressed with his victories in 'battle royals', a group of businessmen financed his fistic career and he became lightweight champion of the world. Jack earned over 1.5 million over the course of his career only to once again end up shining shoes in his twilight years.

He sold out Madison square garden more than any other boxer in history and then when it was all over he went back to being a humble shoe shiner. An awesome warrior who didn't really want much in life and wasn't too greedy.

Didn't get a chance to tune in yet but when I saw Beau Jack I had to comment. My old trainer(who was a professional from the middle 50s until the late 60s) and the man that taught me the sweet science, not just boxing but the sweet science, absolutely loved and swore by Beau! Beau Jack this, Beau Jack that! I've not been able to find too much on BJack over the years so I really appreciate the share. Salute!

Although I haven't heard of him until now. But if he was fighting during a different Era, I would be a big fan of this guy. It seemed like there was no quit on this man, a true warrior in every sense of the word. Thankfully he had a happy ending which is something you don't normally see with fighters during this era.

Enormously thrilled to catch this video. From about 89' to 93' I befriended a co-worker who fought out of Chgo, same weight class and era. "Irish" Tim Dalton never fought Jack and I can't find a common opponent. He wasn't just a local fighter, boxrec has 64-15-2. He was good, not on Jacks level. We worked at a large print shop. He was about 65 and proud to still be at his fighting weight. Tim was relentlessly bullied by a bigger young man. He would ask me from time to time to get this kid off his back. I asked nicely, threatened, then eventually it had to get a little physical. I regret that it went on for about 2 yrs. I wasn't a tough guy, just a little big, young and goofy. Tim was a well mannered gentleman who kept up with the fight game. Super nice, I wish I was smart enough to have appreciated him more. He would have LOVED this channel. RIP Timmy.

Thank you Rich for this video. I have been doing research on fighters with Indigenous backgrounds and Beau Jack is another one to add to the collection. A lot of Cherokee and later Seminoles were living in places such as Augusta, GA and he has all the features to go with it, even the name, his name being Walker a common name we took up after the unfulfilled treaties. He definitely was gifted the Warrior Spirit from his grandmother, like many of us do. Rest in Power Beau Jack! He reminds me in looks of Regis Prograis, another person with possible Cherokee or Seminole Ancestry but banished to Louisiana.

"i'm not going to always be here." was the fatalist quote that i used to get from my dad, when he would exhort me to get my shit together, or deal with a problem. he also used to say(when i would talk about how great things were going to be), "son, y'all 'll never be half of what we are." and sure enough . . .

I've long hypothesized that even the segregated south was not as vile and racist as is often portrayed simply because after two world wars men had seen the ugly side of racism. Jack's story supports my theory when you consider that prominent white Georgians looked out for him, and took care of him much like Cassius Clay's Louisville syndicate did, and even took civic pride in him. Battle Royales, taught today as the ugly face of Southern racism, were something Jack looked back on with fondness. If ANYONE in America would have seen the evil face of racism it would be him, but he was never a crusader for political points.
(Side note: HBO documentary from 1988 called Boxing's Greatest Knockouts (with Iron Mike and Larry Merchant) did a great deep dive into the Williams fight.)

@@uvic4027 No sir. I disagree, respectfully. The last lynching in the south occurred the month I was born, in 1981 (and thankfully was on a downward trend during each decade of the 20th century). Further, you're missing the point of asking the most important question: "Racist...compared to what?"
What I mean is, I don't deny that there was racism in the south. I also don't deny that things could be bad for black people. But just look at the south and compare how minorities in America in the 20th century were treated compared to other countries at that time. You might have a greater appreciation for how much of the racial unrest was and is exaggerated.
How were ethnic minorities treated in Japan in the 1940s? There were none, they had all been liquidated and enslaved. How were ethnic minorities treated in Turkey? Well, there was the Armanian Genocide. And while we are on that subject, what happened in Germany from 1920 to 1945? Take any country and contrast it to America, and I think you'll find that though we have our dark moments, our country was much fairer to minorities than any other country at that time. Name a better place, I'll wait. South Africa? What was France doing to Algerians and Vietnamese in the 1940s and 50s?
Beau Jack may have ended up a poor shoe polisher but that's Beau Jack's fault. The system wasn't rigged against him. He decided to waste his money. Don't blame America for that. He made enough money that he should have never been poor again. That isn't America's fault.
As stated, America may not have been wonderful to southern blacks. But compared to what?
