"Disbelieving, that's the real crime." Man that lyric fits this perfectly. While I don't headcanon Mapleshade as creating the Dark Forest, the cat who did it in my headcanon did it in a similar way to her! I'm obsessed with this!
I like to imagine that this takes place before Heartless That Appledusk was let into StarClan at first without any questioning, but after Mapleshade showed Silverpelt her side of the story, made them see that she wasnt the only one at fault and created the Dark Forest to separate herself from the cats that hurt her, Silverpelt decided to see Appledusk's side of the story, and when he fabricated a tale of a cruel and heartless she-cat killer, they knew that he deserved to be sent to the Dark Forest, where Mapleshade got to finish what she started. Also, maybe the others were questioned a bit too but learned from Appledusk's mistake and showed remorse and accepted fault and so were allowed to stay.

You know I actually really like the idea of cats rejecting Starclan rather than being rejected b starclan, because plenty of cats have had such a disservice done to them and I hate how cats who were treated so badly like mapleshade are kicked into the dark forest after the world turned them into the monsters they became. Also thunderclan was literally like "FUCK YOU, MAPLESHADE, we can't have riveclan cats in our clan!" and then they get a riveclan medicine cat because I guess they can ignore their own morals when it's convenient to them
Thats not what happend mapleshade's mate killed oakstars son i mean he doesnt want anyone who had kits with the person who lilled his son and lied to everyone and was dumb enough to go cross a river then it's their fault that she went to have kits with a riverclan cat that was seeing someone else that was a scummy move she would get revenge but why kill 7 people??
@@Masking_masker-masky Mapleshade is like a Gigi Caldwell from Scream Queens character.. she's a sympathetic villain. You feel sorry for her. The thing is, nobody in Mapleshade's Vengeance is a good person. Everybody who wronged her is just as guilty for their own deaths and the murders as she is. That's why all the characters she killed should've gone to the Dark Forest. (Except Ravenwing, I guess..) Appledusk got into a clan-cross relationship just like Maple did, he cheated on both her and Reedshine. Frecklewish broke the warrior code when she watched the kits drown. And Maple never agreed to Birchface being their father, she just looked at her for a few moments and Frecklewish took it as her agreeing. Mapleshade was insane with grief, she lost her mind. She deserves to be in the Dark Forest, though so do most of the cats that wronged her, including Oakstar and Duskstar/Darkstar. Her kits were not egging her on, she was hallucinating them. The kits were the real victims in this book. Literally nearly all characters Maple wanted dead were terrible people, almost everyone in her book is a horrible person. Edit:: Also, Mapleshade was pregnant with Appledusk's kits before Birchface and Flowerpaw drowned. That is entirely Assdusk's fault. And about the river thing, Maple had nowhere else to go. The old territories were always rather cramped and Oakstar led raids on twoleg place, Kittypets fought back during that time. Mapleshade couldn't have become a rogue between territories with her kits because she wouldn't be able to keep them all safe, she would've had to leave them to hunt for them and risk a patrol or predator or stay with them until they were all starving, resulting in her not being able to nurse them. The only thing she could've done for them is take them to Riverclan, with their father. She thought Appledusk loved her and them as he pretended to when he first met the kits and when he always met up with her. Appledusk was a liar and he used her *and* Reedshine.

She couldn't have put them behind her and gone first because it would've been even more dangerous, she had smashed her head and still had the injury Frecklewish gave her and she of course does not have extra webbing on her paws like Riverclan cats do, she couldn't have saved them in that current because the floods only continued coming. She tried desperately to save them. Like I said, *EVERYONE BROKE THE CODE IN THAT BOOK.* Frecklewish, Appledusk, Oakstar, Dark/Duskstar, Mapleshade herself. Literally the only victim of hers that was acting on Starclan will was Ravenwing, even then he had no need to snitch because having them be halfclan would not have affected anything later on in their lives. Graystripe's kits with Silverstream are proof that Halfclan kits know their loyalty depending on which their main clan is. No, Maple isn't justified. But neither are all the horrible cats that lied and assumed things about her. Frecklewish had absolutely no reason to assume they were Birchface's kits and even if that didn't really start it all. She broke the code. "No warrior can neglect a kit in pain or danger, even if that kit is from a different clan." Dark/Duskstar, Frecklewish, Appledusk and Oakstar broke that rule by sending the kits away. Maple deserved to be exiled, but exiling the kits was not right; Exiling the kits was breaking the code. Did Mapleshade break the warrior code? Yes. So did Appledusk. Nobody is justified, nobody is a good character in that book. Everyone broke the code, all of her victims and the two leaders deserve to be in the Dark Forest.

For all the people in the comment section arguing about mapleshade. Mapleshade knew that here relationship with Appledusk was against the warrior code but she continued on in here relationship. Lots of cats have done this. Frecklewish assumed that the father was Birchface. But Mapleshade did let her assume because she thought here kits would be safer. Oakstar exillide mapleshade and her two month old kits during a storm. Exilling two month old kits would put the kits at risk of more dangers then if the kits were in a clan. Exiling Mapleshade is understandable. Because Appledusk murderd Birchface. But exiling two month old kits who did nothing wrong is different thing. Mapleshade could of went to the two leg place but did not. She thought they would be better of in riverclan. When she left thunderclan. She was angry and just wanted to get as for away from thunderclan as possible. She did try to save here kits but she hit her head on a rock. And it was mentioned in the books that Frecklewish saw the kits drowning and did nothing. And the warrior code states that you cannot neglect any suffering or dying kit dosen't matter if the kit is from a different clan or not. Appledusk cheated on both Mapleshade and Reedshine. Appledusk also broke up with Mapleshade right after her kits died. Mapleshade was angry and sad after losing everything. She started to hallucinate her kits crying out for here. Mapleshade fought avenging them would be the only way to help them there is nothing like a mother's wrath. Mapleshade did deserve to go to the Darkforest yes I agree. but all the cats she killed where not good cats either.

I mean, Mapleshade had a lot of pressure put on her she probably felt like she had to go to river lan quickly or else she and her kits would die and didn’t think it through properly why? She didn’t really have time for that as thunderclan sent frecklewish after her to make sure she’s gone and mapleshade probably thought if she didn’t cross the river quickly frecklewish would hurt her and her kits.
i love this idea! mapleshade definitely shouldn't have gone to starclan, but in a way, that's ultimately starclan's fault. they did nothing about her situation despite her pleas for guidance and help from them. they showed no sign that she was doing anything potentially wrong. she knew it was wrong to have kits with a cat of another clan, but there are numerous other forbidden couples that weren't punished to the lengths she was (that isn't to say they weren't punished at all, but she definitely got fucked over by literally everyone in this story.) overall, starclan definitely did a shitty job watching over them. it's their fault mapleshade had turned out the way she did. in other words, they could have done more to prevent this turn out. maybe birchface in starclan convinces ravenwing in a dream that he actually was the father of those kits. or they could have saved her the grief of losing her kits since she pretty much lost everything at that point. no one in that book deserved what they got. except for oakstar. seriously. fuck that guy.
I always want to remind people that mapleshade always intended to submit to punishment for what she had done! She says it again and again that she ALWAYS intended to tell the truth, but when her kits were old enough they wouldn't have to grow up with it looming over them, when they wouldn't be judged for her crimes. Even after ravenwing told her he was telling oakstar she thought to herself she was prepared to be punished, even exiled, because she understood she had broken a rule, even if she felt the rule was unjust- but she NEVER believed her clan would punish innocent children for her crimes. Mapleshade was foolish and naive and misguided, and eventually she became a truly evil person, but she had the potential to to be a good one if starclan had guided her more kindly.
@@Draikinator i agree 100%. i agree mapleshade should've been punished, but not her kits. so many cats have been overlooked in this book regarding rule breaking, maybe even starclan themselves. there's a law that states every cat from any clan will be responsible for *any* kit, even if they're from another clan. starclan definitely didn't endorse this rule for mapleshade's case, oakstar didn't give a shit, no one in thunderclan objected, and no one in riverclan sympathized for mapleshade or her dead kits. she was already freaking out because she and her kits were kicked out of the only home they've ever known, but now with the grief of losing her babies and then getting betrayed by the father of her kits and technically getting banished a second time not even a full day later- she had gone through so much emotional trauma in one night it had driven her mad. i don't think that justifies mapleshade, but starclan definitely could have done something. buuuut their lack of guidance and the whole "no mercy" concept from maple's environment definitely made this story stand out from the others in warriors and it was particularly darker in tone than most of them.
Late but what if Silverpelt was the first dead cat but couldn’t stand being useless so they created starclan, and since it’s their creation they judged others to enter.

I know a lot of people think Mapleshade is a horrible and overated character. But to me, the characters in Mapleshade's Vengeance are some of my favorites of all time because they actually have faults. Mapleshade is an incredibly naive character, as mentioned in the desc of this animatic. She expects that StarClan will come down to negate her every move, tell her every time she's wrong. But they don't. When her kits are born, she only tries to protest once when Frecklewish proclaims their father MUST be Birchface (which btw what was that Frecklewish, I know you're grieving girl but c'mon, don't just make assumptions. Frecklewish is acting like Rosetail here lol). Mapleshade foolishly brings her kits to the river to see Appledusk, where literally ANY CAT could see her. A cat does see her, Ravenwing, who proclaims that he had received an omen about three pieces of reed that were washed into his den (which again, wtf was that StarClan, there was no reason for them to need to send an omen about that. The omen is one of the driving reasons for Mapleshade and her kits to be driven out. Maybe her kits wouldn't have died if StarClan hadn't sent an omen saying they didn't belong in ThunderClan.) When Ravenwing reveals the secret on a stormy day, Oakstar is incredibly biased and cruel. Just because Appledusk is there father and he supposedly killed his son Birchface in cold blood. Frecklewish, who is the one who first ASSUMED that Birchface was their father even though Mapleshade was VISIBLY uncomfortable when that was brought up every time. Frecklewish, puts all of the blame on Mapleshade and attacks her. Mapleshade shouldn't have done what she did sure and expected StarClan to give her a sign about her every move, but Frecklewish, Oakstar and Ravenwing didn't have to be so clear. Ravenwing is clearly made out in the scene to HATE Mapleshade for her actions. So, Oakstar decides its a grand idea to exile Mapleshade AND her two month old babies in the middle of a storm. These were eight week old babies with a single mother who was practically having a panic attack. Now, I'm not really sure what happened at this point because Mapleshade seems to completely forget about the twoleg bridge when she's trying to cross the river. I would just assume it was intended for her not to be thinking straight, which she probably wasn't, or the authors conveniently forgot about it. Next, Mapleshade attempts to cross the river during a storm, yes this was stupid. But was it mentioned the river was flooded at this point? NO. It was a FLASH FLOOD, Mapleshade, who had no experience with the river, would have had no idea that the river was about to flooded. This never seems to be mentioned by the fandom. Whilst Mapleshade should have crossed at the twoleg bridge, she was NOT responsible for the death of her kits. No one truly was, though I think Oakstar is partially to blame. A RiverClan patrol manages to recover the bodies of the kits and save Mapleshade, and at this point Appledusk is treating the situation as a responsible adult. When he finds out that Mapleshade intentionally tried to cross the river though, he acts like she would have known it was dangerous. Yes, it was during a storm, but to her the river looked NORMAL. He acts like this panicked woman would've been able to read the river well enough and understand the situation enough to not cross the river. They take Mapleshade and the dead kits to RiverClan camp. At which point Darkstar, who is overall better than Oakstar, but still forcefully takes away her dead kits and buries them, not allowing her to even stay for a night. This is a situation where a women is treated worse than a man. Darkstar acts as though Appledusk has been punished adequetly due to the death of the children he met ONCE and then proceeds to Mapleshade she can never come back or visit her childrens graves?! As the book mentions, Appledusk pins all of the blame on Mapleshade and doesn't even allow her to speak for herself. ALSO, Appledusk was cheating on Mapleshade and Reedshine simultaneously?! Appledusk is a horrible man, please do not make him out to be a good guy. He is a bad man. Reedshine's reaction is little weird and she doesn't even consider this thought and goes right back to being lovey dovey with Appledusk. Mapleshade then of course goes on her killing spree before being killed by Pikepaw. Yes, murder is a horrible crime and is never the answer, but cut her at least a little slack. She thought she was seeing and hearing the ghosts of her children, the children others seem to keep trying to convince her that she murdered, the children she watched drown. Warrior Cats makes she-cats give leaders lives for a mothers love, they ADMIT that it is one of the strongest bonds and forms of love. Then after all of this, Mapleshade is the only cat to be sent to the Dark Forest. Not even Oakstar, the cat who would go on to heartlessly murder kittypets, is sent to the Dark Forest. Not Appledusk who cheated on his wives simultaneously, then blamed his wife for the death of her children. No, they sent Frecklewish of all cats to the Dark Forest because she witnessed them drowning. As if she could've down anything without drowning herself?! Again! WTF STARCLAN?! Mapleshade's Vengeance is such an interesting book filled with so many missed opportunities to weave a brilliant story. I wish we had gotten a Super Edition that fully detailed all of the events leading up to this, a book that gave the characters proper characterisation and acknowledged their faults. But that will never happen, but because of this these characters are some of my favorite and least favorite characters simultaneously for what they could've been. So you know how when Maple shade creates the dark forest, everyone else runs? I’m guessing they run because they don’t want to get trapped. But maybe in this interpretation/AU Freckle is too close and gets trapped in the dark forest with Mapleshade. And turns dark after being separated from her brother once more

I really like this animatic! *But* I have few questions too. I don't want to sound rude so sorry if I sound bad. Keep in mind, this is using the headcanon that cats get judged once dead. If my questions sound stupid just know I'm a big idiot. Q1- Appledusk died before Mapleshade and he was judged by the silverpelt cat, ultimately leading him to the dark forest. If he ended up there first, how come Mapleshade made the dark forest after? (I mean this part jokingly) Did they *PUT HIM ON HOLD???* Wheeze. No lol jk. But seriously, how come the dark forest was made after he died but still went there? Q2a- Why are there starclan judges when there is nothing to judge? I know they must have some sort of ranking system for med cats and leaders because the same cats appeared and make prophecies in the prologues of the books. Q2b- Why do you think there was a ranking system for bad cats and good cats? But this is before the dark forest so the judge is the ranking them, but they don't get punished (because there is no place for punishment). Ah, Mapleshade. Such a complicated character for the things she done. Kinda disappointing that most of comments only lean one sides, either Mapleshade is wrong or right. For me...she's kinda in the middle, honestly. Remind me of a character from Fire Emblem: Three Houses that's a bit similar in their actions that cause a devide in the fandom.
Yup, what I like about Mapleshade's Vengeance is how complicated the story and characters are. Nearly all of the main characters contributed to the end result, innocent cats suffering. Mapleshade suffered, but she's not completely innocent, Appledusk, Ravenwing, Frecklewish, and Oakstar all had a part in her going insane, but that doesn't mean they're evil or bad people. Nobody's blameless here, since it's never usually that black and white in any situation. (Well except for the kits and Perchpaw, they were kinda bystanders)

To be honest, I don't really like Mapleshade. Like, I get it, you want vengence for your dead children. That's fine, I'd want some too, but murdering innocent cats (besides Appledusk) that were sort of related to your exile? Nah man, Frecklewish didn't deserve that, neither did Ravenwing. Plus, did she know it was flood season? If not, okay. But if so, what the heck was she thinking? 3 kits born like 3 months ago crossing a possibly floodable river in the middle of the night? I guess I just find it difficult to understand why she's so popular, and how people can just say her actions were justified. I like Nate's animatic, and no hate to them, but Im just confused on how people can label Mapleshade's clearly wrong actions as justified. Side Note: her exile was completely justified in my opinion. Of course Oakstar and the clan would be upset, you had children with the man who murdered your son and lied about how he was the father of your sin children? :/ So yeah, Mapleshade is a poopy head.

A lot of Villains actions aren’t really justified tbh lel (I haven’t read the book in awhile ack so correct me) I think she’s popular due to being the first female villain, a queen to be in fact. And her story was unique compared to most other villains or that might be just me lel. I think she’s cool in my opinion, her reasons are terrible but she’s pretty kool- She kinda reminds me of a legend of how a mother drowned her children and god punished her to stay as a ghost forever till she finds the bodies of her children-

Every time I see or hear how mapleshade became who she was, I keep thinking how cruel every cat was to her and how she tried to justify her actions with whatever she did. Claiming it was for her kits or to seek justice where she was unjustly ruled with no help whatsoever. Her story is really sad and dark at the same time. Put it to human terms, it has been proven by science that if you make someone angry enough they can and will kill people even if they were angels before. Her story makes complete sense if you see it like that and that she was angry and sad enough that she went from being a good cat and mother to a "Monster" in every other cats eyes. I love how nicely its portrayed in this video bc that's all I've ever seen her as for years!! Great work and I love your style!!

When I saw this was a Mapleshade pmv I was so happy that u posted something Warrior Cats themed. But before I was all "U JOINED BACK INTO WARRIOR CATS!?!" I read the description 1st and now I understand. Planning on making a bit more Warrior Cats content of not, I'm still very happy that u made this. Oh! No. She killed 3 cats. Ravenwing, Frecklewish, and Appledusk. And Oakstar was doing MANY raids on two-leg place, and kittypets were attacking back. It was way to dangerous for her to go there with small kits, and crossing the river? She had no other choice, it was already late at night, and if she was seen in the territory at sunrise, they would of killed her. She had no choice. There was no where she could go, and she knew it was a bit dangerous, but she went to protect her kits, hell, she even tried carrying Patchkit across. I think she should of carried one across at a time, it could of gone better. Maybe she'd only loose one kit.

I think that's a bit unfair- mapleshade broke a rule, yes, but she wasn't trying to avoid being punished for it. She said again and again she always intended to tell the truth when it would be safe to do so, when she would be judged for her crimes and her kits would not have to grow up with the stigma looking over them. When ravenwing confronted her and told her he was going to tell oakstar the truth, mapleshade even said in her inner monologue that she had always intended to tell the truth and this was earlier than she had wanted but she was prepared to accept fair punishment, even expecting to be banished- but she hadn't anticipated the banishment of her innocent two month old children. Putting kits in danger is against the warrior code, and oakstar knowingly banished three exhausted children into the night during a storm- that's against the code. Starclan could have sent the sign about her having broken that rule before then, or after, or during the next day. They could have told oakstar that he shouldn't banish the children, or warned mapleshade not to cross the river. And mapleshade knew she was breaking a rule by being with appledusk, but she felt the rule was unjust- she said over and over again she felt her kits could help end the war between their clans, and she believed fully that starclan supported her because they had sent her no signs she was doing anything wrong which... Well, is kind of their job, to guide cats, especially a cat who is actively looking for signs to guide their decisions. And there's plenty of cats who also broke that rule that we as a reader are meant to sympathize with- it's not a rule that's treated in canon as irredeemable. Mapleshade was a murderer and a bad person, don't get me wrong, but I really feel that she was pushed to be so by terrible circumstances. She clearly went mad after her kits deaths. There's a pretty noteable change in her personality

Mapleshade is a toxic character and that's that. The other cats with illegal relationships didn't resort to coldblooded murder, and if they did, just like mapleshade they wouldn't get my sympathy.

Yknow this is very intresting...... Mapleshade seemed so willing to join the darkforest, hateing starclan for what they have done. And the starclan judger seemed so sympathetic, but had to accept the fact that she is evil. She went insane. I do like to imagen she gets some sort of chance to join her kits in starclan. But this is alot more intresting then "she killed so she's in the dark forest now"
Their big feeling is like, shame, acknowledging she is definitely evil but that they did fail her, they didn't protect her like they were meant to and that this could have been avoided if they had stepped in. I wanted it to definitely be clear she is a villain, but also a tragic one
Listen you've had your punishment and hopefully learned your lesson. Everyone deserves a second chance and while I thought it was an accident to begin with I understand why some people thought you should have consequences. But you've had your fair share of punishments and how you should be able to move on and do better. They sent NSFW art to a minor about warriors, traumatizing the victim then making it about themselves. They also have attacked children verbally and lash out unfairly at critism, and have been abusive and manipulative to people long before that. They unlisted the apology video, and have promised their leaving the fandom and not posting any warriors content anymore due to it.

That Appledusk was let into StarClan at first without any questioning, but after Mapleshade showed Silverpelt her side of the story, made them see that she wasnt the only one at fault and created the Dark Forest to separate herself from the cats that hurt her, Silverpelt decided to see Appledusk's side of the story, and when he fabricated a tale of a cruel and heartless she-cat killer, they knew that he deserved to be sent to the Dark Forest, where Mapleshade got to finish what she started.
Also, maybe the others were questioned a bit too but learned from Appledusk's mistake and showed remorse and accepted fault and so were allowed to stay.

You know I actually really like the idea of cats rejecting Starclan rather than being rejected b starclan, because plenty of cats have had such a disservice done to them and I hate how cats who were treated so badly like mapleshade are kicked into the dark forest after the world turned them into the monsters they became.
Also thunderclan was literally like "FUCK YOU, MAPLESHADE, we can't have riveclan cats in our clan!" and then they get a riveclan medicine cat because I guess they can ignore their own morals when it's convenient to them

Mapleshade is like a Gigi Caldwell from Scream Queens character.. she's a sympathetic villain. You feel sorry for her. The thing is, nobody in Mapleshade's Vengeance is a good person. Everybody who wronged her is just as guilty for their own deaths and the murders as she is. That's why all the characters she killed should've gone to the Dark Forest. (Except Ravenwing, I guess..) Appledusk got into a clan-cross relationship just like Maple did, he cheated on both her and Reedshine. Frecklewish broke the warrior code when she watched the kits drown. And Maple never agreed to Birchface being their father, she just looked at her for a few moments and Frecklewish took it as her agreeing.
Mapleshade was insane with grief, she lost her mind. She deserves to be in the Dark Forest, though so do most of the cats that wronged her, including Oakstar and Duskstar/Darkstar. Her kits were not egging her on, she was hallucinating them. The kits were the real victims in this book.
Literally nearly all characters Maple wanted dead were terrible people, almost everyone in her book is a horrible person.
Edit:: Also, Mapleshade was pregnant with Appledusk's kits before Birchface and Flowerpaw drowned. That is entirely Assdusk's fault. And about the river thing, Maple had nowhere else to go. The old territories were always rather cramped and Oakstar led raids on twoleg place, Kittypets fought back during that time.
Mapleshade couldn't have become a rogue between territories with her kits because she wouldn't be able to keep them all safe, she would've had to leave them to hunt for them and risk a patrol or predator or stay with them until they were all starving, resulting in her not being able to nurse them. The only thing she could've done for them is take them to Riverclan, with their father. She thought Appledusk loved her and them as he pretended to when he first met the kits and when he always met up with her. Appledusk was a liar and he used her *and* Reedshine.

She did *not* let her kits go, read the book. She couldn't have put them behind her and gone first because it would've been even more dangerous, she had smashed her head and still had the injury Frecklewish gave her and she of course does not have extra webbing on her paws like Riverclan cats do, she couldn't have saved them in that current because the floods only continued coming. She tried desperately to save them.
Like I said, *EVERYONE BROKE THE CODE IN THAT BOOK.* Frecklewish, Appledusk, Oakstar, Dark/Duskstar, Mapleshade herself. Literally the only victim of hers that was acting on Starclan will was Ravenwing, even then he had no need to snitch because having them be halfclan would not have affected anything later on in their lives. Graystripe's kits with Silverstream are proof that Halfclan kits know their loyalty depending on which their main clan is.
No, Maple isn't justified. But neither are all the horrible cats that lied and assumed things about her. Frecklewish had absolutely no reason to assume they were Birchface's kits and even if that didn't really start it all. She broke the code.

Dark/Duskstar, Frecklewish, Appledusk and Oakstar broke that rule by sending the kits away. Maple deserved to be exiled, but exiling the kits was not right; Exiling the kits was breaking the code.
Did Mapleshade break the warrior code? Yes. So did Appledusk. Nobody is justified, nobody is a good character in that book. Everyone broke the code, all of her victims and the two leaders deserve to be in the Dark Forest.

For all the people in the comment section arguing about mapleshade.
Mapleshade knew that here relationship with Appledusk was against the warrior code but she continued on in here relationship. Lots of cats have done this. Frecklewish assumed that the father was Birchface. But Mapleshade did let her assume because she thought here kits would be safer. Oakstar exillide mapleshade and her two month old kits during a storm. Exilling two month old kits would put the kits at risk of more dangers then if the kits were in a clan. Exiling Mapleshade is understandable. Because Appledusk murderd Birchface. But exiling two month old kits who did nothing wrong is different thing. Mapleshade could of went to the two leg place but did not. She thought they would be better of in riverclan. When she left thunderclan. She was angry and just wanted to get as for away from thunderclan as possible. She did try to save here kits but she hit her head on a rock. And it was mentioned in the books that Frecklewish saw the kits drowning and did nothing. And the warrior code states that you cannot neglect any suffering or dying kit dosen't matter if the kit is from a different clan or not. Appledusk cheated on both Mapleshade and Reedshine. Appledusk also broke up with Mapleshade right after her kits died. Mapleshade was angry and sad after losing everything. She started to hallucinate her kits crying out for here. Mapleshade fought avenging them would be the only way to help them there is nothing like a mother's wrath. Mapleshade did deserve to go to the Darkforest yes I agree. but all the cats she killed where not good cats either.
To add onto, the ruling leader of ThunderCpan was having portal parties attack kitty pets at the time. The safest place would have been RiverClan

mapleshade definitely shouldn't have gone to starclan, but in a way, that's ultimately starclan's fault. they did nothing about her situation despite her pleas for guidance and help from them. they showed no sign that she was doing anything potentially wrong. she knew it was wrong to have kits with a cat of another clan, but there are numerous other forbidden couples that weren't punished to the lengths she was (that isn't to say they weren't punished at all, but she definitely got fucked over by literally everyone in this story.)
overall, starclan definitely did a shitty job watching over them. it's their fault mapleshade had turned out the way she did. in other words, they could have done more to prevent this turn out. maybe birchface in starclan convinces ravenwing in a dream that he actually was the father of those kits. or they could have saved her the grief of losing her kits since she pretty much lost everything at that point.
no one in that book deserved what they got. except for oakstar. seriously. fuck that guy.
I always want to remind people that mapleshade always intended to submit to punishment for what she had done! She says it again and again that she ALWAYS intended to tell the truth, but when her kits were old enough they wouldn't have to grow up with it looming over them, when they wouldn't be judged for her crimes. Even after ravenwing told her he was telling oakstar she thought to herself she was prepared to be punished, even exiled, because she understood she had broken a rule, even if she felt the rule was unjust- but she NEVER believed her clan would punish innocent children for her crimes. Mapleshade was foolish and naive and misguided, and eventually she became a truly evil person, but she had the potential to to be a good one if starclan had guided her more kindly.

there's a law that states every cat from any clan will be responsible for *any* kit, even if they're from another clan.
starclan definitely didn't endorse this rule for mapleshade's case, oakstar didn't give a shit, no one in thunderclan objected, and no one in riverclan sympathized for mapleshade or her dead kits. she was already freaking out because she and her kits were kicked out of the only home they've ever known, but now with the grief of losing her babies and then getting betrayed by the father of her kits and technically getting banished a second time not even a full day later- she had gone through so much emotional trauma in one night it had driven her mad.
i don't think that justifies mapleshade, but starclan definitely could have done something.
buuuut their lack of guidance and the whole "no mercy" concept from maple's environment definitely made this story stand out from the others in warriors and it was particularly darker in tone than most of them.

I know a lot of people think Mapleshade is a horrible and overated character. But to me, the characters in Mapleshade's Vengeance are some of my favorites of all time because they actually have faults. Mapleshade is an incredibly naive character, as mentioned in the desc of this animatic. She expects that StarClan will come down to negate her every move, tell her every time she's wrong. But they don't. When her kits are born, she only tries to protest once when Frecklewish proclaims their father MUST be Birchface (which btw what was that Frecklewish, I know you're grieving girl but c'mon, don't just make assumptions. Frecklewish is acting like Rosetail here lol). Mapleshade foolishly brings her kits to the river to see Appledusk, where literally ANY CAT could see her. A cat does see her, Ravenwing, who proclaims that he had received an omen about three pieces of reed that were washed into his den (which again, wtf was that StarClan, there was no reason for them to need to send an omen about that. The omen is one of the driving reasons for Mapleshade and her kits to be driven out. Maybe her kits wouldn't have died if StarClan hadn't sent an omen saying they didn't belong in ThunderClan.) When Ravenwing reveals the secret on a stormy day, Oakstar is incredibly biased and cruel. Just because Appledusk is there father and he supposedly killed his son Birchface in cold blood. Frecklewish, who is the one who first ASSUMED that Birchface was their father even though Mapleshade was VISIBLY uncomfortable when that was brought up every time. Frecklewish, puts all of the blame on Mapleshade and attacks her. Mapleshade shouldn't have done what she did sure and expected StarClan to give her a sign about her every move, but Frecklewish, Oakstar and Ravenwing didn't have to be so clear. Ravenwing is clearly made out in the scene to HATE Mapleshade for her actions. So, Oakstar decides its a grand idea to exile Mapleshade AND her two month old babies in the middle of a storm. These were eight week old babies with a single mother who was practically having a panic attack. Now, I'm not really sure what happened at this point because Mapleshade seems to completely forget about the twoleg bridge when she's trying to cross the river. I would just assume it was intended for her not to be thinking straight, which she probably wasn't, or the authors conveniently forgot about it. Next, Mapleshade attempts to cross the river during a storm, yes this was stupid. But was it mentioned the river was flooded at this point? NO. It was a FLASH FLOOD, Mapleshade, who had no experience with the river, would have had no idea that the river was about to flooded. This never seems to be mentioned by the fandom. Whilst Mapleshade should have crossed at the twoleg bridge, she was NOT responsible for the death of her kits. No one truly was, though I think Oakstar is partially to blame. A RiverClan patrol manages to recover the bodies of the kits and save Mapleshade, and at this point Appledusk is treating the situation as a responsible adult. When he finds out that Mapleshade intentionally tried to cross the river though, he acts like she would have known it was dangerous. Yes, it was during a storm, but to her the river looked NORMAL. He acts like this panicked woman would've been able to read the river well enough and understand the situation enough to not cross the river. They take Mapleshade and the dead kits to RiverClan camp. At which point Darkstar, who is overall better than Oakstar, but still forcefully takes away her dead kits and buries them, not allowing her to even stay for a night. This is a situation where a women is treated worse than a man. Darkstar acts as though Appledusk has been punished adequetly due to the death of the children he met ONCE and then proceeds to Mapleshade she can never come back or visit her childrens graves?! As the book mentions, Appledusk pins all of the blame on Mapleshade and doesn't even allow her to speak for herself. ALSO, Appledusk was cheating on Mapleshade and Reedshine simultaneously?! Appledusk is a horrible man, please do not make him out to be a good guy. He is a bad man. Reedshine's reaction is little weird and she doesn't even consider this thought and goes right back to being lovey dovey with Appledusk. Mapleshade then of course goes on her killing spree before being killed by Pikepaw. Yes, murder is a horrible crime and is never the answer, but cut her at least a little slack. She thought she was seeing and hearing the ghosts of her children, the children others seem to keep trying to convince her that she murdered, the children she watched drown. Warrior Cats makes she-cats give leaders lives for a mothers love, they ADMIT that it is one of the strongest bonds and forms of love. Then after all of this, Mapleshade is the only cat to be sent to the Dark Forest. Not even Oakstar, the cat who would go on to heartlessly murder kittypets, is sent to the Dark Forest. Not Appledusk who cheated on his wives simultaneously, then blamed his wife for the death of her children. No, they sent Frecklewish of all cats to the Dark Forest because she witnessed them drowning. As if she could've down anything without drowning herself?! Again! WTF STARCLAN?! Mapleshade's Vengeance is such an interesting book filled with so many missed opportunities to weave a brilliant story. I wish we had gotten a Super Edition that fully detailed all of the events leading up to this, a book that gave the characters proper characterisation and acknowledged their faults. But that will never happen, but because of this these characters are some of my favorite and least favorite characters simultaneously for what they could've been.

So you know how when Maple shade creates the dark forest, everyone else runs? I’m guessing they run because they don’t want to get trapped. But maybe in this interpretation/AU Freckle is too close and gets trapped in the dark forest with Mapleshade. And turns dark after being separated from her brother once more

Kinda disappointing that most of comments only lean one sides, either Mapleshade is wrong or right. For me...she's kinda in the middle, honestly. Remind me of a character from Fire Emblem: Three Houses that's a bit similar in their actions that cause a devide in the fandom.
Yeah, more complicated than just "mapleshade did nothing wrong" (she did many things wrong) or "mapleshade deserved it" (she didn't deserve it)
Yup, what I like about Mapleshade's Vengeance is how complicated the story and characters are. Nearly all of the main characters contributed to the end result, innocent cats suffering. Mapleshade suffered, but she's not completely innocent, Appledusk, Ravenwing, Frecklewish, and Oakstar all had a part in her going insane, but that doesn't mean they're evil or bad people. Nobody's blameless here, since it's never usually that black and white in any situation.

To be honest, I don't really like Mapleshade. Like, I get it, you want vengence for your dead children. That's fine, I'd want some too, but murdering innocent cats (besides Appledusk) that were sort of related to your exile? Nah man, Frecklewish didn't deserve that, neither did Ravenwing. Plus, did she know it was flood season? If not, okay. But if so, what the heck was she thinking? 3 kits born like 3 months ago crossing a possibly floodable river in the middle of the night? I guess I just find it difficult to understand why she's so popular, and how people can just say her actions were justified. I like Nate's animatic, and no hate to them, but Im just confused on how people can label Mapleshade's clearly wrong actions as justified.
Side Note: her exile was completely justified in my opinion. Of course Oakstar and the clan would be upset, you had children with the man who murdered your son and lied about how he was the father of your sin children?

Every time I see or hear how mapleshade became who she was, I keep thinking how cruel every cat was to her and how she tried to justify her actions with whatever she did. Claiming it was for her kits or to seek justice where she was unjustly ruled with no help whatsoever. Her story is really sad and dark at the same time. Put it to human terms, it has been proven by science that if you make someone angry enough they can and will kill people even if they were angels before. Her story makes complete sense if you see it like that and that she was angry and sad enough that she went from being a good cat and mother to a "Monster" in every other cats eyes. I love how nicely its portrayed in this video bc that's all I've ever seen her as for years!! Great work and I love your style!!

No. She killed 3 cats. Ravenwing, Frecklewish, and Appledusk. And Oakstar was doing MANY raids on two-leg place, and kittypets were attacking back. It was way to dangerous for her to go there with small kits, and crossing the river? She had no other choice, it was already late at night, and if she was seen in the territory at sunrise, they would of killed her. She had no choice. There was no where she could go, and she knew it was a bit dangerous, but she went to protect her kits, hell, she even tried carrying Patchkit across. I think she should of carried one across at a time, it could of gone better. Maybe she'd only loose one kit.

I think that's a bit unfair- mapleshade broke a rule, yes, but she wasn't trying to avoid being punished for it. She said again and again she always intended to tell the truth when it would be safe to do so, when she would be judged for her crimes and her kits would not have to grow up with the stigma looking over them. When ravenwing confronted her and told her he was going to tell oakstar the truth, mapleshade even said in her inner monologue that she had always intended to tell the truth and this was earlier than she had wanted but she was prepared to accept fair punishment, even expecting to be banished- but she hadn't anticipated the banishment of her innocent two month old children. Putting kits in danger is against the warrior code, and oakstar knowingly banished three exhausted children into the night during a storm- that's against the code. Starclan could have sent the sign about her having broken that rule before then, or after, or during the next day. They could have told oakstar that he shouldn't banish the children, or warned mapleshade not to cross the river. And mapleshade knew she was breaking a rule by being with appledusk, but she felt the rule was unjust- she said over and over again she felt her kits could help end the war between their clans, and she believed fully that starclan supported her because they had sent her no signs she was doing anything wrong which... Well, is kind of their job, to guide cats, especially a cat who is actively looking for signs to guide their decisions.
And there's plenty of cats who also broke that rule that we as a reader are meant to sympathize with- it's not a rule that's treated in canon as irredeemable. Mapleshade was a murderer and a bad person, don't get me wrong, but I really feel that she was pushed to be so by terrible circumstances. She clearly went mad after her kits deaths. There's a pretty noteable change in her personality

I do like to imagen she gets some sort of chance to join her kits in starclan. But this is alot more intresting then "she killed so she's in the dark forest now"
Their big feeling is like, shame, acknowledging she is definitely evil but that they did fail her, they didn't protect her like they were meant to and that this could have been avoided if they had stepped in. I wanted it to definitely be clear she is a villain, but also a tragic one

Everyone deserves a second chance and while I thought it was an accident to begin with I understand why some people thought you should have consequences. But you've had your fair share of punishments and how you should be able to move on and do better.
