  • I woke up early and hit a creek for some spring musky fishing in western PA. Weather was partly cloudy with a high of 80 F. The water temperature was in the high 50s to 60 F. Muskies were spread throughout the creek and spawning muskies were observed in shallower sections.
    Filmed on 5-14-2022, 6:45 AM - 12:30 PM

    5'' Yum Money Minnow with 1/2 oz Buckeye J-will Swimbait hook

    To any concerned:
    1. This is purely a stocked fishery so catching and releasing musky here during spawning has zero effect on future numbers of fish. The musky will spawn and lay eggs etc., but the eggs will become buried/suffocated because there is too much algae (due to agricultural runoff). Among gamefish this problem is specific to musky and walleye, which is why many places in the US have to regularly stock those species.
    2. Muskies are not easier to catch during the spawn. If anything it’s harder because, even though you see a lot of musky, actively spawning muskies are not eating and muskies also don’t make beds or guard fry. Yes you can still catch some because they don’t all spawn at the exact same time…but it’s harder because a smaller number of the fish in the area will be actively feeding. For this reason alone I wouldn’t even have gone if I knew they’d be spawning this late in the year but I don’t regret it because I ended up with some very cool footage.
    Thanks for watching.

      Also very weird they spawn this late.. like i know how pike usually spawns in februari/march (that s because their offspring needs to be big enough in april/may to eat the offspring of other fish species.. thats why pike is so succesfull.. (id imagine a normal musky would also spawn a lot earlier..cause they are related and stuff).. also pike usually spawns in the weeds/near shore... they dont spawn in gravel like a trout would..

      I did not cast to any paired fish. They don’t all spawn at once there and were some clearly fish that were not spawning. Anyway I’m not going back there for a while--both because of what you’re saying but also because I figure the fishing is worse with a significant percentage of fish not actively eating.

    A suspending jerkbait is absolute killer for fish like this.
    Cast a rapala HJ-14 past the fish, jerk it w medium speed / to make noise and then kill it in the water once its near the fish or once a fish has taken notice. You wouldn't believe how long you can leave a suspending bait without movement near a fish w interest and get bit.
    I've watched skis look at my suspending jerkbait in the water with no movement of the bait just sitting there and endup Smashing it. I've seen bites after the baits sitting suspended for 3-4minutes

    • @drewq3022
      @drewq3022 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @kenanthony7361 I’ll give you a better response. If you are fishing small creeks try to find anywhere there is a waterfall. They tend to hangout right underneath them. Or if you find a place where a lot of rocks are in the water where it is super shallow and then opens up I’d fish the front of those rocks where the water is rolling off. The creek I fish has a huge waterfall with a decent size pool before it hits the “rock road” as I like to call it. The rocks have a bunch of holes where the musky hangout at. Also don’t underestimate a good glidebait. Save yourself some money and buy the xps bass glidebait. Don’t get the musky one. The bass glidebait catch just as many musky and it’s cheaper! Also a medussa mini has been a big part of my arsenal. If you want to find musky use google/google maps. First look up what waterways your area has that has them. Then you’ll want to go to google maps, find the lake, and follow any creeks that come out of it. Some of my best spots have came from using this tactic! Best of luck!

      Not really no…..you will lose a lot of lures/hooks because of their teeth and the pike will swim away with your hooks in its face. You should use some kind of leader to prevent bite offs. See where I live it’s illegal to target musky during their spawning season… seems rather unethical to be doing it whether it’s allowed in your state or not

    • @absoluteunitmedia
      @absoluteunitmedia  2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Ya we have no closed season. Apparently it’s because for water quality reasons (runoff) musky spawning down here is mostly not successful anyway and it’s mainly a stocked fishery. Anyway I thought they’d be done spawning already and didn’t expect to see that. As I told someone else I didn’t cast to any paired fish but I don’t think they bite anyway. Just like other fish they don’t all spawn at once though so they’re probably always done eating and either finished spawning or haven’t yet.

    • @absoluteunitmedia
      @absoluteunitmedia  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I think mainly because they are so prized as a game fish that no one wants to kill one. Especially a big one. Also probably a lot of mercury in a big/old one

    • @brad5065
      @brad5065 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@absoluteunitmedia Well I have a tip for all big fish lovers. You bake the monster and then you peel off the skin. Along the lateral line between the top half and the bottom half, you will see alot of grey or silver or brown "stuff". That is like the fishes liver. It holds every toxin and poison. Mercury, lead, toxins cannot enter the fishes actual flesh. Scoop out the gunk and anything any size is good to eat. Didn't know that did you. I learned the trick from someone long ago. Then a book and now google.
