I had the same problem, years ago and eventually I heard from God but then realised He has been speaking to me since I started I just did not understand how He speaks. Today I know the word is His voice every word in the book is God speaking to you, so what you should do is read your bible with a notepad next to you, after you read a passage write down everything that comes to mind keep doing that and you will reach a place in your live where God will lift you up and you will like 'Click' oh wow that is God speaking.
Hearing the "audible" voice of God is something that doesn't happen very often in most of our lives. It happens, though. But the "still small voice", the "whispers" within our spirit, that we perceive when our soul is CALM; then through the written Word. So many times we are thinking, meditating in something, and the Lord will bring some scriptures to our mind related with what we are considering! We need to be very attentive, He is with us ready to guide us, help us in any way we need Him. There are hindrances in our soul though. We all come from the kingdom of darkness, and we bring evil spirits within, inherited from our ancestors' sins or our own. We need to seek God in fasting and praying asking Him to show us the spirits we need to cast out. We will need to do this in different moments through out our walk. Example: I was going through much trouble and started feeling sorry for myself. This pity party brought me down. When I prayed about it, the Lord spoke to me (whispers) Cast out that self-pity spirit! I am ALMIGHTY. There is nothing I can't do! Your allowing that self-pity is SIN. So we need to be careful and mindful to walk in FAITH, focusing on Him, not to open doors to evil spirits. Our carnal nature attracts them!!

It is important we obey Jesus instructions to those who want to follow Him in Mathew 16:24. The "original sin" is that men became INDEPENDENT from God. Independence from God our Creator brings death (physical/body and eternal /spirit and soul). Gen.3 The first creature that rebelled against God and became independent was satan and the 1/3 of angelic host that followed him. Men followed satan's counsel and sinned; and since that moment, man (and woman)’s nature changed and corrupted and replicates satan. Inside their dead spirit every person has an altar, a throne where the “I / SELF” sits as god. Man entered into the kingdom of DARKNESS. To return to God and to His Kingdom of Light, we need to acknowledge and recognize His Government, His Authority, over us, and our Obedience to Him. We recognize He is the Son of God that died in my place so that I can return to my Father. So we have the Mercy granted to us and our SPIRIT is born again. We immediately must have the “I/SELF” step down from that throne, and invite GOD to sit on it. He is our God, our Savior, our King, our Master, our Head, our Captain, our Teacher, our ALL. Then we have to deal with our SOUL. The self has to be brought to the cross - that's what we are to carry our cross, Mathew 16:24. Our carnality, private agendas, selfish dreams and desires, we must put them to death. If we don't, the "self" will continue to govern our lives. This is KEY TO living a victorious Christian life. Don't make decisions on your own! Now you have a Boss, a Lord. Every idea, you bring to Him in prayer and ask Him if it originated in Him, or is it your own. Our own ideas originate in the flesh always and are corrupt. We must put them to death, and ask Him to give us HIS desires, His ideas! We need to receive the Baptism of the Holy Spirit, of Fire and Power to live this life! Pray in the spirit as much as possible and seek to be attentive to His guidance and instruction. Seek to learn in His Presence every time you study the Scriptures, asking Him to reveal His truth to you!
