    This maybe unique overseas but here in the states it’s actually common. This guy built his truck very tastefully. Love what he has done 👏🏼🤘🏼 Aussies know how to build off roaders for sure.

      a full sized pickup truck in an off road build is not very common IMO, it's usually mall crawlers with spacer lifts and tiny sidewalls.

      It's suppose to be a truck.....but the Chevrolet 2500 / 3500 SRW is more like a car dressed up like a truck...compared to the Ford F250 / F350 SRW or Dodge (Ram - Sheep) 2500 / 3500 SRW. The Chevrolet 2500 / 3500 SRW 4WD and or GMC 2500 / 3500 SRW 4WD trucks seriously lack off-road capabilities compared to the Ford F250 / F350 SRW 4WD and Dodge 2500 / 3500 SRW 4WD trucks. Why?
      To put it simply, both Chevrolet 4WD and GMC 4WD trucks are PATHETIC on uneven terrain off-road, especially in mud and snow. Listed below are a few reasons.
      1. IFS Axle - poor axle articulation / wheel travel compared to Solid Front Axle on uneven terrain off-road
      2. Poor Approach Angle - unable to ascend a steep hill
      3. Poor Departure Angle - unable to descend a steep hill
      4. Poor Breakover Angle - gets "high centered" easily on uneven terrain off-road because of low hanging frame rails
      5. Poor Body Design - square / rectangle shaped wheel well for a round rim and round tire - "the proverbial round peg in a square hole".
      NOTES:
      Number 4 - The low hanging frame rails greatly handicaps the truck...even after a lift is installed because the frame rails will always hang down and result in a very poor breakover angle compared to the Ford 4WD and Dodge 4WD trucks. The low hanging frame rails can cause (and has caused) the Chevrolet 4WD and GMC 4WD to become "teeter totters" on small knoll hills off-road.
      Number 5 - The square / rectangle wheel wells for a round rim and round tire seriously handicaps the truck for aftermarket upgrades regarding the increase in lift for using large tires which results in compromising the "center of gravity", therefore increasing the issues and problems with "pitch and roll" when traveling on uneven terrain off-road. Both the Ford 4WD and Dodge 4WD trucks have round (rounded) wheel wells for round rims and round tires. It is possible to put on a 2 inch taller tire with 2 inches of LESS lift on a Ford 4WD or Dodge 4WD truck compared to a Chevrolet 4WD or GMC 4WD truck.
      To say it another way, a 37 inch tire can be installed on a Ford F250 or F350 4WD truck with only a front level suspension with more than adequate wheel travel.....while a front and rear 4 inch suspension lift (less on the rear) is required on a Chevrolet 4WD or GMC 4WD truck in order to fit a 35 inch tire with decent wheel travel. The only way around that on GM 4WD trucks would be to cut the front fender and rear bedside panel sheet metal to minimize the lift. If that is done, the aesthetics are severely affected...and the truck looks even more ugly than it did prior to the sheet metal modifications.
      Chevrolet 4WD and GMC 4WD trucks are good for hauling a few groceries or some items from a home improvement store, or towing loads on dry, wet or snow packed paved highways and roads.....but definitely not the best choice for a Class 2 or Class 3 truck used for hauling, towing AND off-road use...especially in mud and snow on uneven terrain.

    • @15Jeep
      @15Jeep 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Chris Maujean Not at all bored. Just pointing out the General Motors "Poor Design List" which greatly handicaps their 4WD trucks off-road capabilities.
      In 1974, there were very good reasons why Bob Chandler chose a Ford 4WD truck instead of a Chevrolet 4WD truck. Bob's 1974 Ford F250 4WD truck later became world famous.....the first of many Ford Big Foot trucks!
      In the past, I owned Chevrolet trucks...2WD "Action Line" and 4WD "Square Body". Still like the "Action Line" trucks. Shame that GM did not keep the Solid Front Axles in the 4WD trucks and the round wheel wells in both 2WD and 4WD trucks. Therefore, I am not biased.
      It is no secret that most people conducting auto, SUV, and truck reviews accentuate and highlight the positive aspects, benefits, capabilities, design, features, options and strengths. Far less attention, focus and emphasis is placed on flaws and weaknesses.
      Like it or not, since 1973 and more so since 1988, the GM 4WD trucks have some serious design and engineering flaws.....that inhibits the trucks off-road capabilities. I suppose this is a classic example of "the truth hurts".
      Historically, providing a comfortable and smooth ride has been an engineering benchmark, feature, goal and hallmark of all GM vehicles. Unfortunately, for 4WD truck enthusiasts this pursuit resulted in an inferior product in the 4WD SUV and truck market segment.
      That all said, if I wanted a Chevrolet 4WD or GMC 4WD SUV or truck, I would first search for and then purchase a 1967 - 1972 (preferably a 1969, 1970, 1971 or 1972) Chevrolet C30 or GMC C3500 2WD "Action Line" truck. I would then make arrangements with R Tech Fabrications (website link below) in Idaho to stretch the frame and custom build a 4 door Crew Cab...primed and ready for sanding and paint. I would do the rest of the work myself.
      www.rtechfabrications.com/

    • @15Jeep
      @15Jeep 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Chris Maujean Horses for Courses? Hey.....You did a phenomenal job on the build.....the choices in aftermarket accessories, components and parts! For what it is.....a Chevrolet 4WD truck...it turned out as good as it gets!
      However, the GM 4WD truck platform with all the design and engineering flaws, is not the best truck for a great 4WD off-road or overland rig. To put it simply, the GM 4WD trucks will not successfully navigate in many off-road situations, especially over uneven terrain because of the IFS axle and low hanging frame rails.
      Speaking of "low hanging".....the Chevrolet 4WD and GMC 4WD diesel trucks have yet another design and engineering flaw in the location of the DEF tank. Yeah, that "low hanging" container on the outside of the frame rail below the front passenger seat.
      I have seen guys destroy the DEF tank because their GM 4WD truck got "high centered" while driving off-road in the Rocky Mountain states.
      In short, the GM 4WD trucks have too many handicaps...mainly the TWO PROBLEMS regarding "high center" and poor "center of gravity" .....higher lifts required to clear large (larger) tires.
      The Ford 4WD and Dodge (Ram) 4WD trucks DO NOT have these two problems and therefore are much better platforms to build an exceptional overland truck that has superior off-road capabilities.

      @@AussieDestinationsUnknown my response was meant for Rod. His comment does not take into account an individual's requirements when choosing a vehicle. I don't personally own a 79 nor have I performed a GVM upgrade on by fourby so no offence taken, however his statement is misguided.

      Buying a Chev that can tow large out of the box simply isn’t practical for most travellers. This Chev is a full 400mm wider than a 200 series, making it totally impractical if the vehicle is also a daily driver. It also renders it too wide to access some tracks without creating damage. Also, a 200 series with a GVM upgrade still comes in cheaper than this Chev (discounting all mods). Not knocking it, but it’s simply not the answer for most people. I think it’s a weapon and good on them for making it work, but don’t kid yourself that this works for everyone. It’s all about individual needs.

    Im pretty happy with myself having just bought a new wildtrak and put 25k in fruit on it. Its cost me roughly 90k all up. But that's what this guy spent on his trucks mods almost. Im humbled.

    that tank sticking out from under the cab must be a minus when going off-road & it's an eyesore on such a unit of a truck ! Is that the polyethelene tank for the DEF/Ad Blue ?

    @Aussie Destinations Unknown Looks like you already have a little bit of rocker/sill damage on the drivers side. You said you have rock sliders on order but any plans to change the DEF tank or give it some sort of protection? Chevy didn't move the DEF tank inboard of the frame until this newest generation truck and that tank in it's current location is just waiting to get smashed on something.

    Good info re the lift laws moving into a light rigid. I’v resisted one of these due to reliability and maintenance costs, but also because the long wheel base would ruin it off road. Obviously if you can get a decent lift on it that would offset ramp over angle problem.

    • @AussieDestinationsUnknown
      @AussieDestinationsUnknown 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      mate the large wheel base gives it the stability for towing large loads...its such a planted rig when towing our caravan. they all have their pros and cons
