- I just got Paramount Plus on my smart TV and when the "Flashdance" title card came up, I was on it! I forgot how young and sexy Michael Nouri and Jennifer Beals were, but never forgot that scene where she took her bra off from under her loose fitting low cut sweatshirt right in front of Michael Nouri's character. She conveyed so much with those big brown eyes of hers.
The soundtrack was a phenomenal success driven by two #1 pop songs, "Maniac" by Michael Sembello for two weeks and then a six week run at #1 with Irene Cara and "Flashdance...What A Feeling" with a spectacular Giorgio Moroder production that ruled the airwaves that summer. Irene Cara was born Irene Cara Escalera on March 18, 1959 in The Bronx as one of five children. She was three years old when she was one of five finalists for the Little Miss America Pageant. She began performing on TV on Spanish language programs then moved to performing on Johnny Carson's The Tonight Show". That got her a role as a band member of "The Electric Company".
She began recording in Spanish and English, even releasing an English lyric Christmas album. Irene continued to perform live and then the theatre bug bit her and she did many on and off Broadway shoes with the likes of Shirley Jones and Raul Julia. She participated in Roots:The Next Generation.
She hit the mainstream with her star turn acting and performing two songs for 1980's "Fame" with the title song "Fame" and "Out Here On My Own". She is the only female star to have TWO songs up for the same Grammy, performing both songs with "Fame" winning the award. That song was a #1 disco hit for one week.
In 1982 her career went into overdrive and she appeared in "DC Cab" and sang a few songs there and eventually played Dorothy in "The Wiz". The next project was with Giorgio Moroder who was scoring a movie called "Flashdance" and brought her the music track. Irene was initially averse to working with Giorgio because she did not want to face the obvious comparisons to Donna Summer. She wrote some lyrics and finished the song which turned out to be a massive hit and it won 1983 Grammies for Best Song and Best Female Pop Vocal becoming the first hispanic woman of color to win those Oscars. She continued to collaborate with Moroder from time to time.
In the fall of 1983, I was gigging a wedding and it was a party! It was for co workers relative Monica F. who sat down with me to determine what the mood of the party and what songs she wanted. It went on so long that the Hotel told me to shut down, so I played the last song. No one got up to leave and the energy was still pretty high. I was going to shut everything off but Monica had persuaded the Hotel to have another half hour and they allowed it. As soon as the bar opened I dropped the needle on this one because it starts off really slow and mellow like the sun rising.
EVERYONE recognized it and quickly got on the dance floor....no one was sitting down after that. Then I had to shut down after one more song and the obvious choice was the TGIF version of Donna Summer's "Last Dance". I made over 1000$ in tips that night and the wedding was an all around success. I hadn't intended to play either, as they were not on Monica's list. So much whooping and hollering, I wanted it to never end. The opportunity came to remix this one and I was only too happy to get this done for you. I found so many layers to listen to I hope you enjoy hearing them too!

My heart is broken hearing of the passing of Irene Cara.
This is signature Moroder. After his 70s disco smashes, this is his 80s soundtrack smash. Deserved a long version as good.
I wish she didn't get screwed by her record labels.

I just found out that Irene Cara just passed away! She will be sorely missed. I will always remember her on The Electric Company as the group Short Circus and in the movie DC Cab as herself! I always remember Irene make a cameo in the Ghostbusters video too. I can some up Irene's career in a nutshell and that is "What A Feeling!" Rest In Peace Irene Cara. You will be missed as always and forever for sure!
Yup!, and also country singer KT Oslin, who also died a little bit too soon. I would've loved to have gone to a KT Oslin concert and met her, but she quit her music too soon also! My favorite song from her is Hold me. I like a lot of her songs, but that one is great! Rest in Peace Irene cara, and KT Oslin!

If you could go back in time, would you go see her in concert, and meet her? Would you like her to give you a hug? If I could, I'd like to go back in time and meet Olivia Newton John, and KT Oslin, who both passed away. Olivia Newton John died just a smidge too soon. I wanted to meet her, but that wasn't in God's will. KT Oslin died too soon also, and she quit her correre too soon also. After the Early 90's, we never heard anything from her. Such a shame.
Had no idea that GM did the production and I've listened to this since it came out. Such a great feel good song.

I wish we could go back to the 80's. I want to go back so bad, but we can't. I feel as bad as you do, buddy. I wanna meet Olivia Newton John so badly, and go see her in concert and meet her and get a hug from her. I would also like to go through the 80's and help my younger self out. I'd like to help my Dad get off drugs so he and Mom would stay together.

Kind of a timely release. Just a couple of weeks ago, Jimmy Fallon had an '80s-themed episode: Ralph Macchio, Lea Thompson, and Jennifer Beals were interviewed; Modern English performed; and Debbie Gibson sat in with The Roots (and played her songs as bumper music). What memories that episode brought back! I remember seeing this movie at my university's theater and how happy this song sounded; nearly 40 years later, it still has it. 😎

I remember another great song by Irene right after this release called “ Why Me” .
It never found charted success but nonetheless it was very much underrated and received little air play.
Give “ Why Me “ a listen and tell me that’s a great song.

I imagine Irene workin out on a musical tredmill, and that thing in my mind is making all this good music, and just as she got off of it, that's when she says, "Yeah!" cause she felt good from her work out, and that musical tredmill of hers plays some funky music.
Another incredible extended version that stays true to the original and yet adds to it. My only complaint would be it's too short!

Nothin' like a good old-fashion breakdown. This song never had one. I like that you included all the words. The original version just repeats the same verse twice. Cute end out... everyone in the band quits and leaves the drum machine going, LOL.
