Actually makes a lot of sense given the various inspirations for the Metroid villains. Metroids are xenomorphs, Mother Brain is MOTHER from Alien, the X are The Thing, the EMMI are the Predator (they may have a more specific thing they're referencing), and Raven Beak is Darth Vader. It's cool how Metroid is more than just "Alien but Nintendo"
Could've had it three days before release if he really wanted that SFX. All the audio in the game is neatly separated into different tracks for your convenience, you just need something to convert BFSTM into anything else.

The EMMI sections are as suspensful and unnerving as the Xenomorph sections in Alien Isolation which is insane that they managed to pull it off in a 2D game where you have tons of weapons and mobility at your disposal
If it wasn't for the fact that there's no stakes to these sections since you respawn right next to the door and can easily bruteforce these sections making them lose any kind of spookiness :(
@@SerpongeDash If they weren't brute force able, they wouldn't appeal to as many people, sadly. Some people could get *real* spooked when they get to these, regardless of how scary they are (yes, even with how tame it feels compared to most horror games nowadays), and people who came to Metroid for a 2D platformer where they blow stuff up don't wanna have sections dragged out for several minutes where most of their weapons are useless and they have to ignore the one-hit-kill enemy. Effectively, the game still has to appeal to as many people as possible, because money. If that means making the gimmick sections less tedious/challenging, then it has to be done, sadly. Hopefully, we'll see some legendary modding madlad someday make the ENTIRE GAME into one big EMMI zone, but that won't be for a while.
@@ED-gw9rg the thing is there was an easy solution to this: have an optional hard mode that doesn't have the automatic checkpoints, even just this simple change would have given the Emmi sections an actual point, because as it is they're just kind of an annoyance to most players, which is kind of sad with how well designed these sections actually are

He turned around with an expression of absolute terror on his face, his thumb automatically trying to move the nonexistent joystick. The fact that I chuckled at that in a way that almost sounded like the E.M.M.I sounds didn't help either. He later informed me that there is an especially deep spot in Hell kept just for me. I regret nothing.
Their DNA probe being beaklike as well as their hands and feet resembling talons seriously made me wonder why they are so birdlike, and has me questioning their origins.
I reckon that they may have also indirectly taken some inspiration from General Grievous, considering the skeletal appendages, digitigrade legs, clawed feet, and crawling on all fours

Every time I hear EMMI’s footsteps closely aside from beeping sounds, are more terrifying specially when you are in visual sight radius of EMMI. Yellow one is the scariest since it runs fast like hell.
Just hearing this noise makes entering their domain a lot more frightening than it already is. It just makes you want to leave the room EMMI-diately. I’ll leave now…..
Here's an idea. Take a page from the Earthbound stage. Create a stage that takes place in one of the Zones and have the EMMIs be a hazard. Every once in awhile, one of 7 will pop up. The silver one would be the least threatening since it's slow, but it could still stab and ohko your ass. White would be slightly quicker, but still only have the stab. Green could pop in and out of the vents. Yellow could dart across the stage a few times. Blue would crawl around while freezing fighters (and assist characters if any are present). Purple would attempt to hit fighters (and assist characters) with shock blasts before crawling across the stage, stabbing whoever it runs into. Orange would just do one run across the stage at a time, dropping an active bomb item. None of them would actively pursue the fighters, they'd just stab whoever they ran into.
What I love about 0:00 is that... that's the friggin sounds we heard since metroid 1 in the NES and have been carried though out the series. The EMMI makes the sounds of those weird rooms! I hope they keep doing that.
I read in a translated version of an interview with Sakamoto discussing Metroid Dread that the idea of the E.M.M.I's sound came from his childhood. At some point in his youth, he was in some situation where he heard the cry of an Oriental Turtle Dove and it freaked him out. He recognized that at face value it really wasn't that scary, but in that particular time and place it really messed with him. So his idea for the E.M.M.I sound was something that wasn't inherently scary, but became something rather chilling under the right circumstances. I really like the way this man thinks.

every action horror game thrives on having one enemy that you CANNOT solve with weapons, be it mr x, the regenerator in dead space, the SA-X before, and now EMMI(and her sisters)
I was first completely baffled that the Federation made survey drones out of the strongest metals in the galaxy and programmed to be relentlessly efficient hunting machines, but then I realize some things. 1) The Federation was dealing with the X Parasites, and knowing what happened at the BSL, they are understandably taking extreme measures. 2) The EMMI are notoriously equipped with a DNA extraction probe, which can seeming pierce through anything. Considering that they're sent to a potential planet filled with X, and knowing what the X are capable off, it was a good idea(?) to make sure the extraction probe was strong enough to at least puncture through the thickest of skin and carapace if necessary. 3) Their armor being made of the strongest materials is a deliberate choice to ensure that the EMMI can survive any encounter and return with any DNA payloads with minimal damage, if not completely unharmed. On the note of the Omega Cannon, not sure what exactly is "omega energy", but damn if that thing is strong enough to power giant bio-mechanical brains and melt through seemingly indestructible metal. 4) Knowing the Federation, they are likely using the EMMI not only to test the presence of X, but also to bring back any useful DNA for experiments. They remade the Metroids, they can surely remake whatever organism the EMMI can extract. Maybe even weaponize the X like they could have with the Metroids.

When you mix a Xenomorph, a Predator and the Turrets from Portal you get the E.M.M.I. A mechanical monstrosity indeed
I'm wondering if the EMMI units were very loosely based off woodpeckers, judging from both their audio cues as well as their killer needles.

I was showering, and my brother decided to blast this through the bathroom door. I screamed at the top of my lungs, and my parents were not happy.
