    As an ex South African, now living in Wales, I thank you for you very informative videos. Been doing carnivore now for 10 months and feel absolutely amazing having lost 35kg, deep sleep, absolutely clear sinuses, no pain in my arthritic knee (that needs replacing - not anymore), got more than a 90 degree bend in my knee and can go down stairs facing forwards, can now ride a bike, no cravings whatsoever, no bloating, tummy works when it needs to without having to take tablets (had to for the last 20 odd years despite eating loads of veggies and bran like we were told to!). Best way of eating - now eating to live rather than living to eat!!

      My Grandmother and Mother both died with Alzheimer's. I am 70 years old. I have had long years of Keto and now Carnivore. But, have had early years of eating sweets and not good. I am doing everything I can to help history not to repeat in MY Life. I'm so happy to see this video to help the younger generation not to repeat what may have been in their Family History.

    Great information. My mom died from Alzheimer’s but she was apoe3/3. I’m apoe3/4 so I eat zero grains, zero seed oils, zero processed foods, macadamia nuts, limited fruit and veg and lots of fish and pastured raised meat. Also take a high quality (doterra) multi-vitamin. My inflammation markers are super low, insulin is 3.27 and a1c is 4.7. Hopefully it helps avoid a future with Alzheimer’s.

    I am ApoE3/E4. AD prevalent in the family. Been in ketosis mostly for the last 23 years since diagnosed T2D at age 40. So I am a fat adapted fat burner and work at staying that way. I am counting on ketones to save me from AD. They saved me from diabetes. I will report back when I am 80. Ha!
    I believe the need to fuel our big brains is the reason humans readily produce ketones when not blocked by high insulin levels.

    'I want to go to bed one night, completely healthy, and wake up dead'. Sounds comedic, but after helplessly holding my crying mum's hand while her mind was tortured by Alzheimer's for 8 long years, I get it and hope so too. Eat fat!

Living to age 92 is great with all your mental faculties intact, not so much if you can't remember the last 10 seconds of your life. It is a terrible disease, thank you for sharing your personal story as well.

    THANK you for another brilliant video. You always take a deeper dive into even what the keto community believes they already know. There is nothing more horrifying than punishing your surviving loved ones by getting Alzheimer's or senility if you can possibly avoid it. For those who don't get the genes test, the best practice is to just assume you DO have them and alter your diet NOW before it's too late.

    Big family history of Alzheimer’s. Covid has escalated my own brain fog. At 66 it is sad snd embarrassing at time . I am doing intermittent fasting and Keto . I fall off sometimes. I am carb addicted.
    I have lost 23# . I do try to get in one 24 to 42 hour fast with my schedule.
    This helps understand why I need better fats and more often !

    Thank-you, this reinforces my commitment to continue Keto and intermittent fasting for my husband and myself, with omega 3 and 6, and saturated fats. So glad my husband declined statins for his fine cholesterol. We are keeping in our plan to stay dementia free. Watching his parents suffer in their 80s with his Mom’s decline, after eating the standard American diet, has made me grateful we know about this approach. I wish more Mds and nutritionists knew and taught these facts. Thanks !

    My father and his mother both had Alzheimer's. It took my dad pretty quick. He was a bit forgetful, then had a small stroke and he went downhill from there. His body literally forgot how to swallow, and he was in his own world by then. He fell into a starvation mode, and lost consciousness and never woke up. He passed at home. My grandmother was getting forgetful, and her drs kept telling my cousins that she was having mini strokes, but when I went to see her about 6 mos before she passed, she grabbed on to my then 3yo son and was dragging him around and calling him my dad's name. Seeing my Dad the way he was, I'm almost positive it was Alzheimer's. That was back in the early 90's. I often wonder if it will hit me, I have become very forgetful the past few years. I get lost driving home, nothing looks familiar, thank God for Google Maps. I started in with the MCT oil and it did help a bit, but it is what it is... I'm 54yo.

    Alzheimer's is a big, big deal for me since my mother died of Alzheimer's, spending the last 15 years of her life in a nursing home and she went in at the same age as I am now. Needless to say, I carry the gene for it. So it is my great hope that keto will help with this as much as it has helped me with other things.

    My mother in law had Alzheimer's, and we had to watch helplessly when she was 92 and no longer able to function independently so she lived with us. She died after a series of strokes at 95. But, having read about Mary Newport's experience and Dale Bredesen's work I tried giving her as much coconut oil as she could take before the laxative effect was too much. I thought I'd give it a month and see if there was any effect to slow down the gradual deterioration. She had got to the point of no longer being able to follow things on TV and had taken to "whooping" instead of speaking (that was perhaps the worst for us). But very quickly there was a noticeable improvement so we put her on a strict ketogenic diet. We didn't test her ketones but she was very "fruity" for a while, which dissipated as she got fat-adapted. To boost ketone production I introduced mct oil but kept on with some coconut oil because when I replaced coconut oil with just mct oil it seemed there was a slight worsening. It could well be just subjective, but I kept on with the coconut oil as well.
    Result: she stopped whooping quite quickly and soon was back to holding simple conversations. A month later she was able to follow things on the TV and after a few months was back to reading (simple things from magazines because she had no short-term memory). So the decline was stopped, and there was even a little reversal, right up to her death. I'm not saying this will help everyone, but it's worth a try, like I did. If it helps even a little, then great. If not then it wasn't a big investment.
    One last thought: Between 9-10 minutes, about the essential fatty acids. I thought I should point one thing out. Since omega 6 competes with omega 3 for uptake, if someone eats a standard diet (with lots of vegetable oils, avoiding sat. fat) where the ratio of omega 6 to omega 3 is typically in excess of 20:1 then eating fatty fish or taking omega 3 supplements will be rendered useless because omega 3 uptake will be swamped by uptake of all that omega 6. Therefore, we need to get the ratio down to a more natural amount like 4:1 or less for uptake of significant amounts of omega 3. Correct?

    • @ianstuart5660
      @ianstuart5660 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Dr. Berg recommends a one to one ratio!

    • @ekondigg6751
      @ekondigg6751 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ianstuart5660 I'm sure a 1:1 ratio is fine, but difficult to achieve. As I mentioned, around 4:1 is "more natural" meaning what you tend to get when eating animal/seafood, and the body is fine with that. 20:1 or more though, is definitely not good.

    I was hoping you would eventually get to the APO E4 status.I follow Dr Nick Norwitz and I’ve watched everything I can find on APO E status. Ivor Cummins is also E3/E4 I believe and Dave Feldman. It appears that eating low carb, keto etc might hold a valuable key to prevention. At least that is my hope. Only one relative with Alzheimer’s so I am paying attention. Thank you for the clear explanation that I will share with family members as some sources are pretty technical. The best podcast for me has been Dr. Paul Mason who clearly believes we can prevent it by low carb, full avoidance of all seed oils and keeping glucose and insulin healthy. It appears that seed oils may be the damage to amyloid that causes them to clump. So, this is all very good stuff.

    Love hearing the information you out, it's not just the information but how you present it. I have been on a strict ketogenic diet for a year and lost 45lbs, then for the last month and a half I have been strict carnivore, I just wanted to see if it made a difference, it has as far as the way the body feels and looks. I have been discussing the lifestyle with family and friends and I don't get positive feedback, I find it interesting that no one seems to care when you're diet is full of seed oil and sugar. The people who are second guessing my choices are people I really think would benefit from a lifestyle change. My family and friends will say when we go out to eat, Paul you have to eat something you can't just drink coffee that's not healthy and I say wait so what you are telling me is if I ate 6 hours ago and I am no longer hungry I have to stuff food in me? They often can't grasp a no carb ketogenic lifestyle

I share you goal at 78 to keep going until I wake up dead or as close to that as I can manage. I've been keto for 2.5 years and I enjoy a much enhanced brain function. Very noticeable increase in the ability to see connections and patterns in my areas of interest. Right brain stuff like being better at photographic composition than when I worked as a professional photographer, and also intellectual patterns in my areas of interest like psychology and philosophy. The left brain loses names and such but the ability integrate ideas and even change life long habits good and bad has increased. The fat adapted body and brain are what I believe the key ingredient.

    What a thought provoking video. Over the last few months I have devouring your videos. This subject of alzheimer's - it strikes close to home. My grandmother, my aunt; both suffered this awful disease. My mother at 89 is perfectly coherent and fiesty. But I still worry, with the genetics and being carb addicted my whole life - will I be my mother or my grandmother and my aunt? Is 55 too late? I could make all of these changes now - but am I too late?

      No you are not too late. I am 63 and only started 2 years ago and it's made a huge difference in my life. At our age you either go forward or you go backward I don't think you stay in in one place at all anymore. So starting creates Improvement. Neglect creates death and disease and heartbreak for your survivors. Be good to yourself once a day is authorized more often is highly recommended.

    Hey Doc! Nice video as always! Could you PLEASE make a video about Polycystic kidney disease? There are no low-carb doctors talking about this at all. There is some animal model research showing very promising results on the keto diet. There are some people stopping the progression of the disease with the only diet on internet groups. At the same time, nephrologists don't have any idea what to do with their patients, and just some of them give patients terrible advice like go vegan, do an alkaline diet and restrict protein, it's crazy!

    I had been sharing all I know with my friends and I recently received a message from one of them who appreciated what I was sharing but also said "I like fruit, veggies and grains with my protein." Her mother passed from Alzheimer's and she's too addicted to care that she's likely on that path. I will not be sharing with her anymore and pray she wakes up before it's too late.

    Doc, being ApoE3/4, I've been working on Keto first, and now carnivore and have gone from a scary memory state to pretty good today (at 64 yrs).
    One thing I'd love to see you cover Dr. Cywes is digestion overall. I have eaten well over the last 5 years, but only recently came across TC Hale who specifically looks at low stomach acid production and thick bile issues that can make even a perfect diet much less helpful, because the food wasn't being preparing well at the very start of its journey in order to get all the nutrients my body needs. I think this is something I see little about in the Keto/carnivore community online.
    Do you address this with patients? Do you think it needs more attention especially with older patients? Would love to see you address this issue!

    It's sad how many people I hear being worried about Alzheimer's, then when I mention Dr. Cywes' and Dr. Berry's take on root causes most declare that "giving up carbs is too much".
    Combine that with most doctors suggesting their diabetic patients eat "more health grains and fruit", and we're fighting a losing battle.

She is okay with keto, sort of, 'has some healthy aspects' she says, but has been taught about how bad LDL is and I have a phone consult with her on Thursday...sigh....I think the LDL is about to hit the fan...

Both overweight, bad diets, no exercise, former smokers/drinkers, metabolically unhealthy. Mom given a mixed diagnosis (vascular/alzheimer's). Dad's vascular.. I do not know my ApoE gene status and don't think it would be good for me to know. I'm already doiing all that I can to avoid the same fate of my parents and other family members. I wonder if diet contributed to dementia in some relatives... and of course the food in nursing homes is so very wrong.
    I was on Lipitor for years. No effect on my cholesterol tests, no side-effects that I noticed. Eventually I quit all statins. Hurt myself on a trip to England in 2018 and the NHS doctor was horrified that as a long- term type 1 diabetic I wasn’t on any statin.
