Hell on Helvellyn - Apex Everest Challenge

- Just over 6mths ago I heard about a new challenge based in the Lake District National Park to scale Helvellyn 9.2 times within 48hrs to accumulate over 8,848m...the height of Everest and it had be intrigued.
The event, the Apex Everest Challenge is open to both individuals and teams. I chose the team option so contacted the event and signed up and set out to assemble a team of like minded hikers who would not only relish the challenge but who also would be great people to spend the weekend with a make some great memories with....I honestly couldn't have picked 4 better guys!
I wouldn't have changed a thing about the event from start to finish. It was so well organised and we were looked after all weekend along with the other 96 competitors. We camped onsite and at the event HQ literally everything you could want and need was included. Hot and cold foods were provided 24/7 plus sandwiches, soup, pastries, snacks, energy bars, fruit, tea and coffee and more all available whenever you wanted it plus, energy bars, electrolytes, energy gels and more. All included in the price.
Over the 2 days my stats showed I completed 4,214M of ascent (13,825ft) over a distance of 45km with 55,000 steps and burning over 6,600 calories. As a team we hit just over 30,000ft of ascent completing our goal.
My team for this one literally needs no introduction but here we go....
Andy @BackpackingUK
It was a no brainer to ask Andy who I met last year for the first time when we both took on the OMM Event together in Snowdonia. An awesome, down to earth guy who's really fit, loves a challenge and we had such a good time last year . Really genuine nice guy and makes great videos on TH-cam too. If you're not subscribed you're missing out. Head over to his channel, drop a subscription and check out his video from the event too. Great content and makes the best gear reviews too so get signed up. We also have the OMM together this October so stay tuned for that one!
Alan @BUSHMANandBLUE
Our secret weapon....this guy is made for the hills and events like this with his fell running background. I've met Al quite a few times now and each time always had a great laugh and got on well together. Alan loves challenges as you'll see from his TH-cam videos...always up in the mountains pushing himself in extreme conditions. He's like a Duracell bunny and keeps on going and I did more ascents with Al than anyone else and really loved his company. Again check out his channel you'll love his videos and will learn a lot from Al. He's the real deal.
Dave @TheSoloSummiteer
Dave joined on without much notice so didn't have too much time to get ready for the event but the moment he heard about the team and event he was straight on it. Don't underestimate Dave....he's really fit and thrives on the mountains and so glad he joined the team. What a lovely guy, I have so much time for Dave and really enjoyed sharing the mountain with him. All smiles all weekend and pushed himself all the way...should be proud! Check out Dave's videos too...if you're looking for that perfect summit pitch Dave will show you some crackers on his channel.
If you want to know more about the event I'll leave a link below for yo to check it out and of course ask the team if you have any questions or comment below and will happily answer any questions.

THAT WAS BRILLIANT! A tough challenge but amazing to complete it as a team with the best team members. Respect to you all and roll on next year with you👊👊👊
Ooush cheers Al. Already looking forward to next year it was awesome
Bushman - are you doing your own TH-cam video about this event?
I recall you doing Swirls car park to Helvellyn summit in 34 mins on 11th April with Blue (it’s all about Blue 😄)on your way to Seat Sandal.
Al the machine... what is your Vo2 Max coming in at?? 🤣🤣
@dawnjthomp 😂
Loved watching this, smiling all through it !! All the lads did great very inspirational 👍👍
Thanks so much Peter. The best guys to do it with and all had a right laugh. Glad I managed to capture some on camera… as off camera we had some right laughs
Kris , that was absolutely awesome, and I have to say, you, Dave, Andy, and Al made one hell of a team. Mad respect for the time on that first run Al made. He was really getting with it. All you guys did an exceptional job.
Dwayne
Thanks Dwayne as always. Yeah Al smashed that first ascent. A bit easier for us as a team as we only had to do half the ascent each as we went up in 2’s so we could afford to push on our sections as we knew we’d get a rest hear and then when the other guys went up. Saying that…Al still smashed it and was really impressive.
You guys are truly a different breed. Absolute respect to everyone who took part.
Haha cheers James. The guys who did all 9.2 on their own deserve the respect as I wouldn’t have fancied that as we got to share it
This was such an enjoyable video! Absolutely great. You totally captured it all - the event - the team spirit - the personality - what it’s all about. So nice incorporating everyone’s footage. Your enthusiasm is so infectious. Inspiring! And congrats on such a great team achievement.
Thanks Tim that means a lot and so glad it’s come across that way as that’s what I hoped for the video. Literally we had the best time and a laugh and just wanted to capture that as much as obviously hiking too. Mates for life right there and we’ve already all agreed to sign up for next year…same team. Can’t wait.
Well done lads, lovely to watch and see you all working together❤❤👌👌👍👍💪💪🙌🙌
Thank you. Definitely doing it as a team was the best decision
That's what I call a video Kris, so we'll put together. You certainly all had a blast, you all showed incredible fitness but Al is on a different level to normal humans so can you confirm he isn't a machine
😂. Best regards to you all, great bunch of lads.❤
Hahaha I can neither confirm or deny that Al is a human 😂. Yeah he’s ace on the hills and a great addition to the team as a good laugh too along with the other lads. All the lads were brilliant and so glad they all decided to take part too. Glad you liked the video.
Really enjoyed watching this. Some effort that lads, massive well done. 👍🏼
Thank you 🤙🏼
Fantastic teamwork lads, well done 👍🏽
Thanks so much
Mate! I’m thoroughly enjoying reliving this. It was an epic weekend with top lads👊…
Cheers Al…totally agree I loved editing this one with all the memories 🤙🏼
Wow, what an epic video. Well done to all involved 👏🏻 I can see this event becoming very popular. Absolutely smashed it guys 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Cheers Mark much appreciated. They have big plans for the event and want to scale it up next year and then have talked about other locations in the future and maybe some aboard. I’d be up for those haha
Absolutely awesome!!! Huge congratulations to you all gents !!! Smashed it 🙌 what a team.
Thanks so much. It was tough but definitely picked the right team and we’re going to do it again next year. Same team 🤙🏼
What a special weekend doing what you love to do. Great team effort, great banter and well organised. Look forward to more videos from you Kris.
Thanks John I appreciate that. It was really well organised I was really impressed.
You certainly seemed to have a great time. Here's to more adventures.
Exactly! We had the best time it was ace
@@krisgleave Glad to hear it. It's always made better when you have folks around you who just make you want to keep pushing yourself.
Totally agree…it was the best idea to do it as a team rather than solo
Especially when you have folks around you who bring out the best in you and challenge you.
Loved this. You all did so well, like bloody machines. Highlight for me was you running to get to the finish before Al haha had me creased 😂
Well done all 👏
😂 I was laughing so much reliving that part. Definitely one of my favourite moments😬
Kris looking over his shoulder was so funny 😂
Haha thanks Jo. We had such a laugh on the event and was good banter having a little race at the end. Al is a beast on the hills though 💪💪
Haha it was so funny and glad I managed to get the camera on at the last minute.
@krisgleave, he's like a bloody mountain goat on steroids 😅
Great to see a new video Kris and what a video! Looks like you guys had a great time. Hope to see some more videos in the future. Well done to all the guys.
Thanks Andrew glad you liked the video. I’ve had a break from YT but back now and already working on next weeks videos. It’ll be a 5-day special next week with a release everyday Monday to Friday for my Tour du Mont Blanc I completed just 5 days before this event.
Have been waiting for this video since you announced it, great challenge and great to see all 4 of you complete it.
Aah that’s nice, hope it was worth the wait. We’re all doing it again next year can’t wait
Inspirational guys! Great to see some of my favourite youtubers collaborating
Aah thank you. The guys were great
What an amazing video to watch, the best part was when he beat Al down, the childish energy was amazing to watch! We all grow up too quick, the camaraderie at that part was fun
Haha thank you really appreciate that. As much as we weren’t racing when I noticed on the steep long section Al was behind as I was running I thought id go for it. It was much further than you see in the video and we just all had a laugh about it. Really enjoyed the sections with Al he’s a beast
Top work fellas. Very inspiring 💪🏼
Cheers Alan really appreciate it
Worth the wait kris great video and a great team effort 💪🏻
Thank you really appreciate it. I know I’ve not uploaded for a long time but I’m back now I’ve missed getting out and also missed YT too.
Fab video lovely to see the whole route my hubby finished as an individual actually great to see what the second route was like 🎉 well done guys
Aah brilliant how did he find it? Full kudos to anyone doing all 9.2 themselves.
@@krisgleave he found it tough on the Saturday morning with his feet, he needed to get them strapped up and lack of electrolytes he didn’t get the balance right with the food intake and fluids 🫣 but once he got that sorted he said he felt amazing. when we met him at the finish he said he could have done another round 🤣 he looked like a drowned rat the weather was awful. everyone did absolutely amazing ….it can’t have been that bad he has signed up for next year 😬
great challenge - great video - great job ! Keep it up mate - all the way from Vietnam :)
Cheers Bilbo as always 🤙🏼
That was a great collaboration of utubers to give use an epic video. Now I need a lay down, from a former fell runner. Nice one lads😊
Haha love it. Al’s a fell runner too so he was certainly more comfortable running up hill. I’m a fast hiker up and run on the flats and down.
@krisgleave I would love to see something like that again.😊
Massive well done lads👌👋
Cheers Gary
Well done team. Great video too - it must have been tough thinking about the camera whilst doing this!
Thank you. Yeah it’s a challenge filming at times especially when you want to keep poles in your hands but really wanted to document this for memories so well worth it.
Well done lads 💪💪 you smashed it 🌄🏕💙
Thank you 🤙🏼
So cool!
Thank you
oh guys, this was absolutely EPIC! Huge well done to you all, that was one hell of an adventure! 👌👌
How to connect iPad to Epson printer
Really enjoyed it and had a great time and good laugh with the lads too. Thank you.
Amazing video chris..im enjoying watching your vids and their inspiring me to get out more..even manage to get a small group together who are total amateurs like me to get out hiking..whernside this weekend for us 😊
Aah that’s amazing Mike, love that you’ve got a group together to get out this weekend that’s amazing. Hope this weather improves for you. Really great to hear you’ve found some inspiration too as I know for myself it’s hard to get out at times so really appreciate you letting me know the videos have helped. Means a lot
Nice one mate
Thank you Joe 🤙🏼
Well done, do you the dji Osmo action for your videos? Looking at leaving GoPro as the batteries stop working.
Thank you. Yeah just used the DJI Action 4. Batteries are sooooo much better and used it for a year now even though i have GoPros too. Just bought the DJI Action 5 Pro too so will be using that on future hikes
@@krisgleave I’m going to get the action 5 all reviews suggest it’s better than the GoPro, cheers Kris.
@@DJVOutdoors The Action 4 is great too though so even consider that it’s cheaper and some good deals on it. The 5 only really worth it if you use the mics and want to use 2 mics. Pretty much the same camera.
Came by to drop a comment ( although not watched yet ) well done to all involved 🙌🏻 i’ll be watching after work.
Ooush good lad thank you really appreciate it. Currently watching yours…bringing back memories of the TMB from a few weeks ago
A brilliant watch gentlemen. A great sense of camaraderie. Thank you.
