I love this video! I really like how you asked the question why we buy certain items in the first place. My current winter jacket always made me look way more voluminous in the tummy area than I actually am and so I never felt very sexy in it, more like a "kilted sausage". But now I started to sew my first own winter coat and even now in the mock up stage I already feel so much better! And even if the materials cost WAY more than just a new jacket, this item will serve me many years, because it fits my needs so well. Your videos really help me in my endevor for my perfect winter coat, thank you for all your hard work!!
I’m so glad I’ve done the switch to a more sustainable wardrobe. Shopping vintage and garments made in England or in Europe has worked out cheaper for me. Switching to natural fabrics too (wool mainly). Getting way more compliments on my outfits too!
I agree, a good sustainable wardrobe isn’t as easy with modern fashion, and it’s all also low quality and you have to throw it away. Buying a high quality suit means you will get more use and the silk and such are farmed by people with real jobs and made by people that know the craft. This also is a benefit because most high quality items are classic, you won’t deal with flash fashion. You also feel and look better with a good suit or blazer.
Nicely put in few words. But if most of your clothes are second-hand or in other way eco-friendly, you can maybe indulge on custom made, or even a bespoke suit. Don't, dismay, if you are a savvy shopper and chose a classic and versatile (not saying boring) one, it won't be as ruinous as it might seem at first glance, and superior quality will make it a good investment that will assure great comfort, looks, and years and years of satisfaction. In the end it even proves to be more economic in the long run, and I'm talking by experience. Not to mention the good quality ones are indeed more eco friendly and traceable than the cheap ones.
I have even found a couple of second hand suits online that with a little alteration, fit perfectly. Often online, they have exact measurements of all parts of the suits, and if not, ask, they generally will be happy to measure the area for you.
It's the hallmark of a gentleman to be considerate of others and to know the value of temperance, so of course it's a virtue to go green. We only have one planet.
Nothing like that, you can check out Justine Leconte's videos. She is a French fashion designer who has made several videos about female fashion and fast fashion traps.
I am a vegan, low waste (not fully zero waste) and environmentally concerned person. I also interested in classic men’s fashion. It was a surprise for me to see you talking about the environmental impacts of fashion industry and I support you. Well done!
Shopping at one particular local thrift store helps me to dress well, and virtually every time I go there, I can find a quality suit that fits almost perfectly for $5. This place is for a local charity, and fairly upscale items get regularly donated. Like any thrift store, you do have to both browse and go regularly, to get the nicest things, but it makes my wardrobe nice on my fixed income. I do get some things new, (shoes, for instance are hard to get to fit my feet), but I do try to get nice vintage when I can. Think I started this as a teen. I went to college with a couple of nice suits I'd gotten from thrift stores. One was French, and fit me perfectly, the other was a classic look that worked well with other suit fashions when I went to college in 1985. It was made in 1949, with cuffs, pleated trousers, and even the lapels were classic, middle of the road width. Again, fit me very well.
Atm by not shopping in high street shops where prices are lower than your sock height is a good start. I agree with origin... living through the times of sweatshops being in all the news, yet we still have them, so I avoid those clothes... Today I remarked that I still have a hoodie and a sweater that are over 20 yrs old and hardly show any wear except the cuffs on the hoodie
I've been a viewer of this channel almost since the beginning and you have teach me so much, I really enjoy this videos with so much detail and has change my way of thinking about the quality. Just want to say thank you Raphael for this amazing content!
Regarding your belt system, I've seen on leatherworking channels how if the belt holes are made in a tear drop shape they reduce the strain caused by the buckle, is that something you considered? It would be a great high end detail that is not really found on ready to wear belts.
I liked this video a lot you are superior to the other TH-cam style and clothing channels. I love the idea of smart buying and wearing timeless pieces which last for years.
I have started to ride my bicycle to work every day (when work was open) for fitness. The office doesn't have a dress code, but I still miss my dapper days of bow ties and dress shirts. Is there a cycling appropriate dress you'd suggest that is not athletic wear? I don't have an option or showering or changing at work so I couldn't bring a suit in a bag, for example.
I know many people don’t think the brand is worth it, but I have a few crew neck tshirts from Ralph Lauren and even after five years theyre still soft on the skin and maintain their great shape. Better then throwing H&M tshirts with holes in them away every year
What an excellent topic for a video! I have collected my entire wardrobe as a vegan, including all shoes, belts, watch straps (vegan leathers). Second-hand/vintage wool garments etc. Ethics and sustainability must be the way forward. Great statement GG!
Thank you for all of your fantastic content! Do you have a video about closet management? i.e. how best to store and organize suits, pocket squares, tie bars, etc.?
Question about lapel pins. I know you wear them through the button hole on the lapel, but I was wondering if it would be appropriate to wear two pins one on each lapel. Would it be too much? Would wearing a pin through the lapel with no button hole damage it? Thanks.
I like to buy secondhand so I can give a garment a new life, and I often find quality fabrics and well made garments for far less than I would pay brand new.
Thank you for this. Great video. I would stress that it's not always necessary to buy from countries halfway around the world, and your local manufacturers often produce much higher quality.
That’s the first I’ll have to disagree with Raphael’s choice of clothing: I think the burgundy tie didn’t pair so well with the striped shirt, as its stripes are way too bold, but that’s just my opinion. Sven always looks sharp!
Give me 1200 bucks and access to vintage stores. With my skills I'd rebuild my wardrobe so one might think I bought mtm or bespoke. The point of vintage is to tap into the timeless aspect within one's style. Such is the sartorial art.
As someone who went vegan over 8 months ago, I struggle with the overabundance of animal products in classic menswear clothing pieces and feel torn apart between my newfound lifestyle and my appreciation for quality clothing (suits, shoes, boots, etc). Would you (or anyone in the comments) have any recommendations for quality vegan labels or brands or any other tips to help me out?
I have never seen a quality vegan leather. At present, leather is a byproduct of the food industry so the alternative would be to throw the skins. I also don't see why we should not use wool or other animal hair and instead create bamboo monocultures or use oil to create fibers, but we are open to new innovative things that are actually better and have less of an environmental footprint or impact. Vegan stuff could be the subject of its own video. We will see if there is enough good stuff out there
@@gentlemansgazette I'd love to see a video on vegan stuff and I'm happy to hear you're open to the idea. I didn't mean any offense with my comment, I love the content you guys are creating and have been a loyal subscriber for years. More than anything this is a personal struggle, and I'd be happy to watch any additional videos or articles on the matter. Thanks for the quick response!
Here is a question about belt maintenance. I have a few hand-dyed leather belts and would like to be able to revitalize them from time to time. Are there products with ingredients i should avoid? A "green" product might be the way; it might not. What's your input?
Sven, Ich mag Ihre videos. Aber, I think that soft beat in the background of your videos is unnecessary and slightly annoying. Would you consider just having voice, no background rhythm?
Great to see sustainability being picked up, as you say the fashion industry is a big polluter especially with throwaway fashion.

Real jobs? That's always been a really weird phrase to me and all my attorney friends.
What I did was just get everything second-hand, the only thing difficult here is a suit.

Great video Sven. Quality over quantity always!
This is an amazing video Raphael! One of my favourites from this channel. So much wisdom in one video...

It's not the equivalent, but you might like Karolina Zebrowska (mostly vintage fashion and humor)

They acctualy did a video about capsule wardrobe.
Nice chinos, I also would like to have a pair made for me, they would be very simillar. Large cuffs and pleats.
Speaking of sustainable, could you please make a video about shoe care?
I kind of like Arket, bought an overcoat in 100% wool on sale for 90 dollars.
I don't know the brand, but I am starting to doubt what they write on the Tag is true..
I too would say, the quality at Arket, seems good to me. AND, is very longlasting.
Good Video,
Can you mention some brands that have good quality in different categories in your opinion.

Where did you get your pants made in Sri Lanka if you don't mind me asking?
I cannot recall. It was a tailor shop close to where Prince Charles stayed. The person had also opened a store in a nicer mall.
Gentleman's Gazette Thank you for the reply. Ahh I see, any idea of the location Prince Charles stayed?
Remember that ww2 Slogan "make do and mend"? that's good advice for life not just for wartime.

Donut Films that sucks, but try wearing linen shirts, seersucker pants, etc. they make a difference.

Interesting, this is about the last thing I would ever think about when buying clothes.

Very boring subject.
sustainable ... I hate this word....it doesn't mean anything.
I kinda find it funny that he has a hard time pronouncing the "gentlemen" part of his channel's name.
