  • How to Use Flow Toolpath in Fusion 360! FLOW is new to me and it can be frustrating, so let's learn how to get it to work properly and how it can improve our surface finishes! It's all about the curves!

I’ll try and explain the point map difference.
Parallel and most other surfacing paths make a triangular net and casts it straight down onto the surface and wherever the points hit on the surface is where they lie.
With flow it lays the triangular map onto the surface and wraps into the surface so it keeps the spacing between the points consistent.
Think of parallel like a steel mesh grate that doesn’t flex and mashed onto the surface. While flow is like a piece of flexible mesh screen laid onto the surface and smoothed out.

So Flow is supposed to have been brought over from HSMWorks since its been there forever. Over there it works fine. And if you watch Rob Lockwoods video on 3D Machining he pretty much shows you how Flow is an amazing toolpath. But over their it works just fine on all surfaces. All surfaces have a UV direction. So this sounds like a bug. Hopefully they get it working cuz in HSMWorks its definatly my favorite toolpath for finishing. And with it being the same CAM kernel I dont see why it would take them long to fix the issues. - Jacob S.

Have you watched Robs video on 3D Machining John? There he goes into good detail on Flow. There it works great. I would think you would have watched all his videos so Im suprised you didnt mention his video. - Jacob S.

John, did you try playing with the tolerance/smoothing settings to get even better results?

Interesting. Hmm I wonder if G2 continuous smooth surfaces also affect the amount of wear you'd see when to metal surfaces move against each other?

Hi John. What about simultaneous 4 axis? Is it possible to use tool tilt advantage on our 4 axis?

So, what do you have planned for the next machine purchase?

I have been intrigued, after you make such a "flow" for a customer, how does the supplier and the customer agree it is made, or not made, to print specification? Example ... a turbocharger aluminum compressor wheel molding equipment? Thanks!

They are CMM’d. The print on things like that should have datum points at XYZ locations on the blades.
Or they with have a GDT profile tolerance call out which a CMM with a scanning probe can check.

What a software do you use to create 3D Models, that you import in your Fusion 360 Soft? And which extension of files have this 3D Models?

Fusion 360 works for creating 3d models, and is the main tool he talks about on this channel. There are some SolidWorks videos very early in the channel, but it's been Fusion 360 for years now.

guess it's a bug, it (seems to) work's only if you stay (sculpt & cam) in the same file. Move over a sculpted model to your (cam template) & it ain't going to work.
