  • On an unusually warm Mid-February day I decided to check colony stores levels and while I was at it add Apivar strips and Pollen-sub patties in preparation for my queen rearing program.
I think it's important to give the bees a good start to the season. Good nutrition and dead mites help us to keep our bees healthy and happy.
Here is my Pollen-sub recipe: -
    Small Batch Pollen Sub Patty
(Fills a Kenwood Chef mixer bowl)
    1.6kg sugar
    1.2kg ultra bee pollen sub
    0.89kg water
    Dash of olive oil
Cap of apple cider vinegar (20ml ish)
First dissolve the sugar in the warm water to make a syrup
Bring all the ingredients together in the mixer bowl and mix to a smooth paste.
Leave overnight for the pollen sub to fully absorb the liquid before portioning into patties. (I make small patties approximately 250g each)
These quantities have been tweaked over a couple of years to give a fairly soft patty that I wrap in baking parchment. I slash the parchment and place face down directly on the frames over the cluster.
