The crusaders agreed and helped with regain the throne but the crusader lords also distributed the byzantine empire among them without anyone else knowing and then the siege began....
It isn't that cut and dry. Both Greek and Latin sources attest to the fact that Alexios IV Angelos, son of the deposed Emperor Isaakios II Angelos, sought the crusaders' aid in restoring his father to the throne and deposing the usurper Alexios III Angelos. They fulfilled this vow and only moved to conquer the city when Alexios V Doukas Mourtzouphlos strangled Alexios IV and took the throne for himself, refusing to pay the crusaders what they were owed for coming to Constantinople to begin with. Alexios V fled, but was captured soon after the formation of the Latin Empire, where he was set atop and thrown off of the column of Theodosius. This isn't to say that the Venetians and crusaders didn't have their own motives for seizing the empire, but it certainly wasn't carried out to repay the crusaders' debt to the Venetians. In fact, that was already paid off when Zara was taken from the Hungarians. If you wish to know more, just read the firsthand accounts of Niketas Choniates and Geoffrey de Villehardouin.
You know the real quote of that soldier was: "Ave! Cometh all ye Men of God! Bring fire and steel upon the jewel of the Byzantines, and sail with me to sack Constantinople, the ageless city!" Upon being asked why, the soldier simply responded, "cuz defenders never win... duh"
byzantine empire was actually called roman empire(the east half of old roman empire that survived after Rome was conqued) archeologists named the empire Byzantium after many years
The nearly 2000 years of the Roman Empire and the Roman Republic was non-Christian. Christianity first appeared as state religion from 380 AD, and then, only about 100 years later, the real Western Roman Empire fell. So Roman Empire was Roman Empire, and Byzantine Empire was Byzantine Empire.
well not really, relegion didnt matter in those condition. You had to adapt. That was mainly what Konstantinos did when he became christian although he didnt commit to it from the start.
It was called Byzantine Empire because the area where Constaninople was located was also named Byzantium and if you are still not convinced that particular area has had its name since 480 BC and even before, you can check references of that area from the writings of historians Thoukydidis & Xenophontas. Thoukydidis has made some references to that specific area as the "final" battle, during the Peloponnesean War (427 - 404) BC, between the Athenean & the Spartan fleet led by Lysandros took place in the narrow sea of Ellispontus nearby the now called Kallipolis That area was the closest one to Byzantium. On the other hand, Xenophontas , who was also a very experienced cavalry leader, has referenced that area because when the Spartan forces had fled to the north alongside the Persian forces they found themselves directly at the Black Sea or Ephxinos Pontos then Xenophontas had to go to the West as he and the rest of the allied Persian army led by Kyros and Spartan army led by Agisilaos were being persuaded by the other Persians led by Artaxerxis the Second plus the main cause of this persuade was the rivalry that started for the conquest of the Persian throne after the death of Kyros & Artaxerxis's father. He had to pass through the area of Byzantium to find "shelter" to the Thracian King of Odrisses (one of the Thracian tribes that lived nearby the river Evros located in Thrace ) . I hope that now you have been convinced .
"I don't think you could ever be more excited for any kind of reinforcements other than Varangian Guard reinforcements." I dunno, Winged Hussar reinforcements would be pretty exciting too.

Hey Apollo. I just wanted to correct you on your history at the beginning. Indeed the French wanted to sail for Jerusalem. They went to Venice in search of ships and supplies. The Doge of Venice Enrico Dandolo was set on controlling the Eastern Mediterranean before his Genoese rivals could get an opportunity. He negotiated with the French to attack Zara in Hungary. Only there did the Crusaders decide to push towards Constantinople. This is because they had already set the precedent (Catholics killing Catholics). I would recommend Villhardouin's account. For a byzantine perspective I would suggest Nicetas Choniates' account.
Yes you are right. However, Alexius Angelus was not a king, but the son and heir of Isaac II. He was imprisoned by his brother in 1195. Of course, there was the incentive of great wealth if the Venetians and the French crusaders succeeded in helping Alexius take back the throne. It tied well with Dandolo's own agenda. The decision however wasn't made until after they had sacked Zara since the French contingent were interested in Jerusalem, not Constantinople. The French besieged Constantinople and forced Alexius Angelus' brother to surrender but they didn't sack the city. Angelus became Emperor and they acquired land in Greece but Angelus failed to pay them the amount that he originally offered. This was the primary reason for the French and Venetian forces to beseige Constantinople a second time. This time in 1204 they sacked the city and plundered its churches. Again Villehardouin and Choniates endorse this narrative. Thank you for reminding me Mr Koukourdelis :)

I find it so funny that no one bothers to read what happens to the knights of the fourth crusade just a year later and how they got slauthered at the battle of Adrianople in 1205 AD. :D Anyway this siege was fun to watch, keep it up PA!
"Stern now was Éomer’s mood, and his mind clear again. He let blow the horns to rally all men to his banner that could come thither; for he thought to make a great shield-wall at the last, and stand, and fight there on foot till all fell, and do deeds of song on the fields of Pelennor, though no man should be left in the West to remember the last King of the Mark. So he rode to a green hillock and there set his banner, and the White Horse ran rippling in the wind." What the defenders should have done at the last.
BEST FIGHT EVER. Just one remark Apollo; all the greek suffixes of -oi in greek factions are pronounced as i (in latin accent). Keep up the good work! P.S. Sorry for being a prick
As regards the pronounciation of greek nouns such as "skoutatoi". When it ends in -oi, it is pronounced as a plain -i. So, it is pronounced as "skoutati". Thanks for the vid by the way, epic.
Hey Pix. Actually the 4th crusade was coerced into attacking Constantinople as they had commissioned a fleet to be built from Venice but some of the crusaders had ships already so a portion left in those instead which left the bulk of the crusaders short on funds to pay for the fleet. The Venetian then took them to an island and left them there until they swore to attack Constantinople who was the Venetian biggest rivals for sea trade.
Thank you so much for doing this, dunno if you got this from suggestion but if so I can't believe you did it!!! I love your channel, keep up the amazing work 💘
It been interesting to watch the siege and occupation of Constantinople by Mehmed II's Ottoman Turks against the Constantine I Byzantines and Venetian Mercenaries.
The varangian guard originally consisted of Rus(mix of Scandinavians and Russians)later there were other Scandinavians as well as english(anglovarangoi:i believe they already are a unit in that mod) and germans. In the 13th, 14th and 15th centuries the majority of the varangians were natives and primarily greeks. Great video nonetheless Apollo!
About the pronunciation of the Byzantine units, the "-oi" at the end of like Dynatoi and Scoutatoi is actually pronounced like the english "e" the same way we use it the word e-nglish for example. Hope I explained it well!
The good thing about the Constantinople map is that it didn't change a great deal since the Atilla era (other than Galata tower and some Italian merchant districts probably). It's a shame that Medieval churches and mosques haven't been incorporated into the settlements yet. Can you imagine a proper siege of Jerusalem or Damascus on this? That would be awesome!
The guy who said the Byzantines ground his gear was Enrico Dandalo--the Doge of Venice. There was more to it than that though: apparently a Byzantine contender for the thrown wanted crusader help, and he didn't pay them when they did assist him.
One old but reliable source, Paparegopoulos, believed there were three battalions in the Imperial Guard in the early Comnenian time: One Byzantine, one non-Byzantine Christian and one non-Christian. The Byzantine Christians were the Emperor's Companions, young nobles associated with the Byzantine Court who fought on horseback, what one might usually associate with a General's bodyguard. The non-Christians were the Guard Archers of vanilla M2TW. The non-Byzantine Christian battalion were the Varangian Guard, who initially may have been partly Saxons from England and partly Russian but also Nordic. Byzantine main line infantry, who were armed with long spears as their primary weapon, also had a variety of secondary weapons, including various types of axes. However, they were not Varangian Guard. I believe but may be wrong, that when Constantinople fell, the Varangian Guard was dissolved, as there was no longer an Emperor, and the Byzantines also lost the know-how of the Greek fire siphon technology, so the Empire of Nicaea should not really have either but of course they would be missed. Fun battle.
The Byzantine Cavalry "Dynatoi" means in Greek "Strong" and its pronounced "Denate". despotate of epirus took part at the siege( well, epirus troops, I don't think the despotate existed at that time), but it was on the Byzantine side because it was a part of the Byzantine Empire

Funny thing is it was the deposed prince of the Byzantine empire that made the 4th crusade go to Constantinople. The crusader did not plan on going to the empire if it wasn’t for that prince promising them to fund the money they needed if the put him back in the throne. Plus many abandoned the crusade after being told they were detouring to the Byzantine empire due to not finding morality in fighting fellow Christians even if they had weird customs in their eyes.
I wanna say that Istanbul comes from the phrase that Byzantines said in Greek "Εις την πολην" In English Es tin Polin meaning In the city. The ottomans with their accent turned that phrase into Is-Tan-Bul You see it's from the greek one and like that Constantinople was named Istanbul by the Turks.
@@anaraschulz9814 these are questions that need to be answered. I went back to Divide et Impera, there is a new update coming with new units and combat, and there is a Beta in the workshop you can use to play custom battles and test stuff out
Varangian guards were essentially troops that the Princes of Kievan Rus used to grant to the Byzantine emperor for his personal protection, to suppress Greek revolts, and to generally deal with any threats that the Byzantium had. In return, the Byzantine emperor became ally to the Rus, payed their troops, and helped them to establish a governing system similar to theirs. This Byzantine influence later caused the Rus to abandon Slavic deities and convert to Orthodoxy, as Byzantium became a role model to the Russians.

The crusade was directed to Constantinople by the Doge of Venice who wanted to get payment for his fleet.

When Venice avoids the blame for the sack of Constantinople in a Total War video. Doge of Venice: 👌😎👌

Apollo: the varangians look interesting
Me: no, THE WALLS look interesting
Very accurate introduction!
I wanna say that Istanbul comes from the phrase that Byzantines said in Greek "Εις την πολην" In English Es tin Polin meaning In the city.
The ottomans with their accent turned that phrase into Is-Tan-Bul
You see it's from the greek one and like that Constantinople was named Istanbul by the Turks.
WHY CANT I RECRUIT SHIPS IN 1212AD? AM I MISSING SOMETHING? Wow, man.

@@anaraschulz9814 these are questions that need to be answered. I went back to Divide et Impera, there is a new update coming with new units and combat, and there is a Beta in the workshop you can use to play custom battles and test stuff out
Kinda late but I think they removed ships from the mod to build up on them and the ground units more
Varangian guards were essentially troops that the Princes of Kievan Rus used to grant to the Byzantine emperor for his personal protection, to suppress Greek revolts, and to generally deal with any threats that the Byzantium had. In return, the Byzantine emperor became ally to the Rus, payed their troops, and helped them to establish a governing system similar to theirs. This Byzantine influence later caused the Rus to abandon Slavic deities and convert to Orthodoxy, as Byzantium became a role model to the Russians.
