I'm in my mid 50s and I only have the albums from the 1990s. I liked them but I was never a hardcore enough fan to really see what happened in the 2000s, so today is a real treat as it seems I have 7 new studio albums to discover. Mark: your channel is a gift to ageing punks with a clear message to put down the favourites that we've been comfort playing for 25 years and go and explore! Many thanks.
They totally changed their sound in 2000 when Element of Sonic Defiance came out… That album is brilliant… Razorblade reminds me of my dad… You gotta check out Vampires on the Exile album, the drum track is mind blowing!
I remember when Element came out. Saw them live and they played all the early classics and then said the next couple of songs are off of our new album " it's different than what you are used to enjoy" and yes we definitely enjoyed it. Love that album
I called that album the singularity moment for me. Growing up an 80s thrash fan who later got into punk…that was when the combined my favorite elements of both. Loved that run of albums up to Transmission Alpha Delta
I love it when you circle back to a great band, but I still think you really need to check out the real McKenzie‘s. -Chip -The lads who fought and won -The ballad of Greyfriars Bobby -White knuckle ride -Too many fingers Some pretty amazing base work with some kick ass bagpipes I don’t think you’ll be disappointed 🤘😉🤘
Had the same reaction you did seeing them live for the first time when they were touring this record! 😄 Like most 90’s punks, I knew them for their skate punk SoCal sound…then I caught them live early 2000’s and it was a 180 on what I was expecting! Like Propagandhi, who also started out as more of a snarky skater punk band, but then completely morphed their sound into a much tighter, faster, and all around heavier powerhouse of a band! Now I’ve seen them several times live, and they always blow me away how tight, fast and technical they’ve become. Definitely one of the most improved bands in punk rock, and they were already really good! 😄 Definitely worth catching live if you ever get a chance! They’re amazing live! 👌
I'm sooo glad you circled back to my favorite band. I knew their newer, more technical stuff would be right up your alley and I hope you keep going down that rabbit hole.
I just wanted to stop by and say congratulations on the 100k!!! I’ve been around since around 3.7k. It’s awesome that you’ve grown so much! Super fkn happy for you!
Their bass player here, Chris Aiken, recently moved into the rhythm guitar role following the departure of Jake Kiley. He’s also one of their primary songwriters, and really chill dude. I got to hang out with him on their tour bus once after a show at a bar in Portland, ME.
@@matan.sasterhe didn't leave. The band told him they wouldn't "need his services this year" and left it at that. He told me this himself on Instagram.
Wtf? Jake left? That's a pretty huge blow to them imo. With him and Jordan both gone that's a BIG part of what made them who they are. Doesn't surprise me that their last couple have been so run-of-the-mill for them, ever since Jordan was kicked out they've just been missing something.
Exile is one of my most favorite albums - I've listened to Strung Out since the 90's but this albums is just fucking awesome! SO HEAVY - Thanks so much for doing this video!
You went and did it , this album is so good came out in a time in my life when i needed this album . Absolutely love this band. Shout out to jordan burns best punk drummer ever fight me.
If you want to delve into more Strung Out, Calling off of their next album, Blackhawks Over Los Angeles, is a killer. And if you want to round out the trio of my favorite bands (already covered Propagandhi and Strung Out), check out Bigwig. Anything off of Reclamation, but the title track is probably the obvious choice.
Love Strung out! Got to see them play at the last Nofx show in San Pedro and those dudes shred and sound great live. I love punk and love when punk bands go to that heavier side and just bring it. Lagwagon does this as well. You should check out their song Cog in the Machine. This is probably why i like power metal as well. It has metal and punk roots and i just love fast music in general. Great video!
Great video as always. I love that I keep getting exposed to new bands I've not heard before. I seem to remember hearing you say at some point that Coheed and Cambria was one of your deserted island bands. You should check out Searching for Tomorrow from them. It was released towards the end of last year. Can't get enough of that song.
Have a real soft spot for this album, however, always thought the mixing was a bit muffled, especially on the lower end. The track ¨Scarlet¨ has a pretty interesting bass line towards the end of the track that should be listed to :)
Their live album is my all time favourite. Perfect mix of all their hits. Then probably Transmission alpha delta. I’d love to see you cover that. Met them a couple times & got Jordan’s drumsticks!
I still remember when this came out. I had to buy an extra CD later because I played the chrome off of the 1st one (remember those things called CD's?😂). IMO Strung Out's best work is their heavier stuff. Another great heavier tune suggestion is Razor Sex from their more upbeat album American Paradox. The song doesn't quite sound like it belongs on the album but it rips! As always, great videos and always enjoy your stuff!
Dude great choice, Strung Out fkn rips, definitely give them more a listen. IMO a band that should’ve gained way more recognition than they have but at least they definitely have a cemented place in punk.
This song fucking rules. Favorite Strung Out Song. “Black Crosses” is another good one if you really liked this one. I’m sure you’re gonna get a billion requests for it”Matchbook” (which you should definitely get to*) but “Black Crosses” is on another later album, so it carries a similar “heavier”vibe though not quite as heavy as “Analog”.
Do you know Guano Apes from Germany? I don't know if they were popular in the US but they were pretty big in Europe (and Japan :P) in the late '90s. "Open Your Eyes" and "Lords of the Boards" were popular songs. Some pretty cool bass, too.
It's hard to think of many stand out bass parts from Strung Out and that's no disrespect to Jim or Chris it's just Jake and Rob are so good at writing captivating guitar leads that your focus is directed at them. For a six stringer this is your band! I have this band to thank for me being the guitarist I am today and still constantly revisit playing their songs!
I personally prefer their 90s stuff and some of their 2010s stuff but I would say their 2000s stuff is more iconic and what they have been known for. It fits so well with all the music trends that were going on at this time period.
You ABSOLUTELY must listen to this record and the Element Of Sonic Defiance EP. They are Strung Out's best work by far, imo, it showcases their darker, more technical metal side without sacrificing that punk edge.
I believe they remastered or re-recorded some of these for their greatest hits compilation about 10 or 12 years ago. But yeah, not the whole album obviously.
As strung out have gone on they’ve become way more metal, Calling is a great song. I’d like to see you analyse little Joe (rkl, I’m not giving up) tribute to the jester play through.
Exile in Oblivion is my favourite album of all time from my favourite band of all time. No band has put out such a consistent catalogue of skate punk/metallic punk although the most recent album was a large disappointment.
Not my favorite style of Strung Out, a little too much Story of the yearish. Not to say SOTY is bad I just prefer the straight up punk Strung Out which imo this song is not
Definitely one of my favorite Strung Out songs. Razor Sex gets pretty brutal too. Dystopian Party Bus is a great super recent one from them. Also. Authority Zero. You need to check out the band Authority Zero. Start with Ollie Ollie Oxen Free.
Razor sex is my favorite track on American paradox. Good call on authority zero, I had forgotten all about them and then saw them live a few months ago, reminded me how great they are.
Thanks for the review man, that song and entire album was a very exciting and creative time for us! Glad you dig it!🤘🏼🍻
I saw strung out in Houston and you absolutely killed it. I'm glad I got to see you perform live. Strung out doesn't feel the same without you.
@@dant7556not the sam! agreed! Jake was my favorite member. all 30 plus times i was in front soaking sweaty jumping and headbanging nonstop
@ Thank you Dan! TX has always been a great place to play!
Big fan here! This album is incredible and "No Voice of Mine" is the best punk song in existence.
Best album you've put out!
This albums a frickin masterpiece!!!!

“Exile in Oblivion” is one of my 5 desert island albums. That and “Transmission Alpha Delta” are their most complete albums IMO
Yes! Now we need Mark to do Black Maps and then full-album reactions to both!
I'm a simple man. I see strung out I click
I love how Strung Out can be metal AND punk in a single song. They always bring the hell fire, hitting you like a 30 megaton warhead.
They totally changed their sound in 2000 when Element of Sonic Defiance came out… That album is brilliant… Razorblade reminds me of my dad… You gotta check out Vampires on the Exile album, the drum track is mind blowing!

Dude, strung out needs to keep coming back in your videos, it only gets better! Chris Aiken is insane!
More to come!
I think The Element of Sonic Defiance is such a unique and amazing album/E.P. I think it would make for an interesting whole album breakdown.😊
I'm not going hurdling through space in some strung out ferris wheel.

My favorite band of all-time. They mostly play in D standard but do alter from time to time for certain tracks. This is D standard.
Drop C. They used it a bit on this and later records.
@Strizz484 Yeah I know Orchid is tuned to drop C. Are you saying they are tuned in drop C on this track?
I'm sooo glad you circled back to my favorite band. I knew their newer, more technical stuff would be right up your alley and I hope you keep going down that rabbit hole.

You looked like you really enjoyed it.
I chose to listen to entirely Strung Out this week while driving for work. Glad this popped up.
MatchBook, calling, modern drugs, vanity, Bring Out Your Dead, the list goes on and on. Great band. Seen them lots of times here in Sydney.
Exile is one of my most favorite albums - I've listened to Strung Out since the 90's but this albums is just fucking awesome! SO HEAVY - Thanks so much for doing this video!
Sooo good! Love this song! Next song from Strung Out has to be "Calling"
I will never NOT love this song to pieces. One of their best most dynamic songs.
Their live shows around this time were amazing!
My favorite album from my favorite band.
Strung Out is one of those bands that have been consistently killing it for decades. Huge catalog of songs!
My favourite Strung Out record. It was that amalgamation if metal and punk that just worked so well!
You went and did it , this album is so good came out in a time in my life when i needed this album . Absolutely love this band. Shout out to jordan burns best punk drummer ever fight me.
I’ll take Derek, but you can’t go wrong with Jordan
Agreed - This album really got me through some of the darkest times of my life. It holds such a special place in my heart
One of my all time favourite albums!
I knew you'd like the song! This whole album is a masterpiece 🤘
One of my all time fav bands, Exhile in Oblivion is an incredible album

Need to react to some Rufio. "Road to Recover" or "Still". amazing pop punk bass playing
The demo version of “Above Me” would be cool
Thanks bringing Strung Out back into my life. Just bought the album.
Have a real soft spot for this album, however, always thought the mixing was a bit muffled, especially on the lower end. The track ¨Scarlet¨ has a pretty interesting bass line towards the end of the track that should be listed to :)
Yes! I would love a remix/remaster of this!
Never Speak Again has the most interesting bass line on the record. Scarlet is cool though
100%, this album in particular desperately needs a remix / remaster. They massacred Jordan's drums in particular
Another cool song with a standout bassline is Rats in the Wall from the album Transmission Alpha Delta
Their live album is my all time favourite. Perfect mix of all their hits. Then probably Transmission alpha delta. I’d love to see you cover that. Met them a couple times & got Jordan’s drumsticks!
i still remember when they put out the element of sonic defiance. its a must listen type album if you like this song.
They definitely had a big metal influence in their music, especially as they got more grounded in their own style. Next Strung Out song --> "Calling"
Such a rad band, album, and song. One of my all-time favorite groups. 🤘

Just for your own enjoyment, check out their song Velvet Alley, the whole album is great as well.
Please do Bigwig "Reclamation" reaction 🙂
yesss more strung out! ive seen this band many times and they ROCK so hard
Please, listen to Mute - Bates Motel and Forus - I Only Go To School For The Handrails 😢

Strung out❤🎉

Only bad thing about element is its too short, being an e.p. love those 8 songs! Peak SO!!

Anyone else started singing the next song!? Lol
"Imagine a place where freedom is just a word on a wall."
Hell yeah dude
While it’s more of a guitar focused song you have to check out their song Calling.
Dragon Attack by Queen!!!!! Kick ass song that would be rad to see you check out. 🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻
*EDIT: AFK by Pinback, as well.
They're big metal fans. They do an awesome cover of Bark at the Moon by Ozzy Osbourne
Best song ever!!
Saw them live in Vienna last year. Sound sucked but the show STILL was terrific. Speaks volumes about how tight they are as a band.
Man what a ripping album. Such a good pick. 👊
I think this song is a metaphorical breakup song.
Yyyyyeeeeesssss!!!!!
Rob Ramos and Jake Riley are the best guitarists in the punk genre.
Have a look at RX Bandits. Specifically the song Ruby Cumulous. The bass is stinking throughout.
Snake in the grass by Much The Same.
Check Chris Swan Dive´s bass line ... is waaaayyy cooler...

This is Strung Out's heaviest song so it's not their real sound.
Don't bother doing any songs off their latest record, there is virtually no Low-End, due to poor mixing
