This is my pre-AP art horror story lol. I would like to warn future AP art students: talk to your teachers and department heads before you take any classes. I had a teacher who led the art department promise to mentor me till my graduation but after her baby she left the district. My next art teacher would yell at us, make students cry, withhold art supplies, and refused to teach me about portfolio requirements. I reported her to my assistant principal and reached out to three other art teachers. They all told me to ask my teacher for help on my portfolio. I had to learn on my own about breadth and concentration however I wasn’t allowed to do concentration in class so I did breadth my entire sophomore year. The new art teacher quit and the principal didn’t even tell our class for two weeks after she left. She took art supplies and hid all our artwork. It was a living nightmare. I talked to my art teacher that I would be having next year and she told me that college board is changing the curriculum in our area so they would be eliminating the breadth section. I love art but I withdrew from every art class I was taking. If a teacher doesn’t put any effort into your education then LEAVE. I wasted two class periods on this so learn to stand up for yourself. Seek education elsewhere even if it’s inconvenient.

At the gymnasium they prioritize it more, because we have separate teachers for each subject, but in primary and secondary school we only draw exactly what the teacher says and music basically isn’t even a subject, because we just have maths or german instead of music.

Can't really imagine doing this twice! I get what you mean when you say it takes a lot out of you. I took ap studio art in my senior year while pretty much working full time with a course schedule that was already rigorous. In the end though I think it really pays off because it's a great opportunity to explore and build on your skills and I know for me personally it taught me so much about how I approach drawing, my creative process, etc.
In the end my high school bought one of the pieces I made to display in the school, and it was a super special opportunity to see all of that hard work really pay off.

you are so lucky you got to do so much art in high school!! i was planning to go to college for illustration and was only able to take two half year art classes. Yeah college board kinda majorly sucks but hey you made it through two years!! Also I never took AP art studio in high school but in AP Research I hit a wall with my research like you did with your portfolio: the struggle of having to scrap your project and start anew (and then hitting even more walls) is unmatched. So mad respect for overcoming that and continuing on!! & Awesome video, keep makin art you like!

Kid, I appreciate you're sharing so much of yourself. I had the most marvelous stroke at 70 years old and started painting. In this last year I've done over 100 pieces of art and my life is changed. I find myself doing things just like this, showing friends my stuff and telling them about it. I have no trouble imagining things and do several types, line drawings, paintings - similar to your course work - and also concentration - in my case, the trees or canopy looked at from below Here I'm at the end and you're in for the long haul - yet I see a lot of myself in you - talk about a reverse. You starting at 14! You're a natural... and I like your art, the videos, you and appreciate you're sharing so much of yourself with all of us. It's great! I would have liked it if you had told more what materials you use. I couldn't always tell if it was watercolor or markers?? But love your outlook and passion to make the world better through your art. I want to sell mine to buy food for people living in tents. Thanks so much.

Your art is so good and loved the concentration statements. I dont even know what mine was because I began making pieces without knowing my theme in order to finish deadlines. I would always just make up bs explanations about what the message of my art was to my teacher. I just added some similar elements to all of my pieces to make them look cohesive and made up a random explanation of what it meant when I submitted my portfolio. I was scared to look at my score because of that, but I ended up still finessing me a 5 lol

I was in AP studio art my sophomore and junior year and I liked my breath more than the concentration just because for my concentrating I always felt this HUGE pressure on myself that the next piece always had to be greater then the other and my art had to please my art teacher, I ended up rushing things and hating everything. In the end more than half of my pieces ended up being completely garbage and I didn't think it was right to enter something I was so passionate about (mine had to do with mental illness and what it looks like through each disorders mind) and not doing it justice so i didn't enter it. However college board decided to turn the tables and change it this year so I have to start from square one hhhhhhhhnovbjrogtjvj. Thank you so much for this video I've been feeling trash about myself for the past 2 years now because of this and now I know I wasn't the only one having a hard time with things like this.

Wow the cancer drawing really struck a chord in me. I had thyroid cancer surgery and I would think what I did wrong. I'd think about my choices or to why this happened. I'm only 19. Life is just ups and downs. Enjoy every moment

Nice work, dude. I took AP art twice in the late 1980s. Keep up the experimenting and play the long game for what you want to do with your talent.

In middle school, the art teacher that I thought didn't like me actually debated a bit with my other teachers and with administration to get me into the advanced art class (the class required good grades and other signatures than the art teacher's). The sad thing about it was that class wound up being the 'dump class' for the kids that didn't get the elective they wanted due to spacing issues. So half the class didn't take art seriously at all...

I got my 5 a little while ago, and I can say that it took a lot of time and effort, but most importantly it genuinely takes so much out of you that it becomes tedious and just difficult

So assuming that your a senior now... I’m also an AP art student right now and all the changes in it, I would love to see how your work goes as it is more about the process rather than the final art pieces!
