I live on the Island and you captured it well. As a year - rounda, our Island is very unique and has a great history. The Island was a Canadian playground for many years, then US trains began hauling folks from DC and the mid-west, and then the depression hit. The PI Military reservation took over 400 properties to build these batteries and house up to 900 soldiers and sailors. Imagine seeing over 500 ships in our harbors, including the USS Wasp and USS Hornet aircraft carriers and all their fleet ships? I am so glad you enjoyed your trip and wished I could have brought you around to some of our secret places. We are the only Casco Bay Island that can see 7 lighthouses from our Island. One more piece of trivia, those entrances had large metal doors covering them as bomb covers (the gun side also) when we were kids, but a fire and post WW2 had folks taking wires, metal, manhole covers for metal salvage. That middle entrance house all the reservation generators for their needs, and those generators were sent to Edwards AFB for the test flight missions, and eventually, the Mercury Space program. All the roads were paved on the reservation, and since the Peaks Island Land Preserve bought it to preserve, they don't allow any permanent structures or paving, opting instead, to keep it in a natural habitat. The Peaks Island Land Preserve (PILP) allow the Sacred and Profane to use it on a random weekend in the fall (even we don't know when they are coming) and each wall, room, and wing in Battery Steele is painted blank and repainted and redecorated inside as well as the exterior every single year. I am so glad you came back to enjoy it again. Murph
Hi Tim! We do love your little island - imagine it is something in the winter haha! And wow - 500 ships in the harbor must have definitely been something. Thank you for the trivia - we will be returning as we have close family near Portland and want to do a bit more exploring next time we are in town. Would love to see all those hidden places! We love the natural habitat in the woods - such a vast difference going from the rocks and waves on Seashore Ave to the woods. The first time we were there last year, we had no idea what all the island had to offer. After doing some research we made it a priority to do more exploring even though we were only in town a few days. Had read that about the Sacred and Profane but didn't know its a secret - very interesting! Thanks again for all the trivia and the watch! Look forward to maybe meeting next time we are headed that way!
Loved this tour of the Island. Ferry rides are the best, and the golf carts are the way to go. Looks like Battery Steele have issues with vandals too. 😂. Lots of spray paint. Tips were very helpful for people heading that way.
Yes - very much enjoyed the ferry ride! Its a very pretty bay with alot going on. One of our viewers commented he lives on the island and apparently there is a secret “pop up” art event each year where the walls are painted over and then redone (fully approved by the land preservation that owns it). Some was graffiti unfortunately but alot of the painting was very cool to look at. Kind of fits with the island vibe 😂
Portland is a beautiful town! We have close family in the area so come up once or twice a year. And agree on the seafood - we enjoyed Lukes on the water last summer when we were there but would love to know some hidden favorites?
Thanks! Our first time in Portland was about 8 years ago - still looks very similar. Great town to wander around the waterfront. Thanks for watching - appreciate!
Thank you for watching! Portland is a great area to visit (and Maine in general with Acadia). The island we found out about last year and this was our second visit. Will be going back next time we are in town - too much fun zipping around in a golf cart lol. Hope you are doing well!
It’s a great place to visit - especially in the spring / fall when not as busy. Just a nice way to spend the day! We are lucky with family there, we get to find all the off the beaten path spots!
Looks like a neat little island. Never been to Maine. Maybe I'll make it up that way someday, when gas prices come down a bit. I made it home from my trip yesterday. Nothing significant broke, so that was a nice change! I do have to fix the doorknob for the bathroom, though. Not sure what happened there. Of course, the ebike I ordered showed up the day after I left, so I had to do without it. I spent this afternoon unpacking it and setting it up. So far, I like it.
Hi Jeffrey! Looking forward to hearing about the trip - sure you are exhausted! Maine should definitely be on a trip list but yes - fuel would be something from the southwest right now! Glad the camper came through ok (at least almost!). Congrats on the ebike and isn't that always the way on timing!! What kind did you get? We bought two rad powers about 6 weeks ago - love them.
Locals prefer to people to say those things, not to upsell. There is only one day a week that new shipment’s get to peaks so they try not to disappoint people who don’t know. Gotta be a local to know the sweet deets lol
Imagine it is very difficult to get supplies! And this time of year it is very busy (at least it was when we were there once in July). Thanks for watching - appreciate!
Don’t forget to visit the 8th Maine Regimental Lodge and Museum. The facility is cared for by the descendants of the 8th Maine Civil War Soldiers. There is a lot of history to see. Stop by and take a free tour…donations greatly appreciated. Located at 13 8th Maine Avenue.
Hey y’all, I can’t figure how to send a message directly, so I’ll ask here. I’m upgrading my batteries and wanted to know how your Renology batteries are doing. I’d love to go with Battle Born, but those are $$$, and if the Renology are good, I’d go with those. Thanks and still digging your videos, thanks for sharing!
Hi David! You can always reach out to our email - winespinescanines@gmail.com if you have a question. As far as the Renogy - we have had it about 11 months now and have been very happy. No issues and we really like the ease of using the monitoring screen you can purchase for it (we have the smart lithium). Plugging it into the battery takes less than 10 secs and we know exact state of charge and how much is coming in or going out. Going to have a review video up soon talking about the battery and the things we like primarily. Nothing so far though makes us regret the purchase! I think Battleborn has a longer warranty and great customer service though. For us - we are glad we saved the money - can put it into something else in the camper haha. Thanks for being a viewer - we appreciate it!
@@WinesPinesandCanines thanks so much for the quick response! The fact I could get 200ah from Renogy for less than 100ah BB is a huge thing I’m struggling with. I’m trying to balance the cost against the 10yr warranty and being made in the US vs China. I think I’m going to have buyers remorse not matter which way I go! ☹️ Thank you for sharing and always keep the rubber side down!
Took a look at the 200ah as we have the 100ah. It is at a great price but one thing - ours has 4000 cycles which is comparable to BB (3000-5000). But the 200ah has 2000 cycles. Doesn’t mean it stops working - just decreases in capability. If you lived in it full time and discharged/charged each day, it will reach 2000 cycles in about 5 years they say. For us, being part time, we would likely lean towards saving the $1000 but if we were full time, we would look at it a little closer.
It was pretty interesting. Had a comment from a local that gave us more fun facts and we will be going back (with a flashlight) to explore at some point! Turns out there is a yearly secret event (approved) where everything is repainted. So much of the painting is related to that. As always - thanks for watching!

Portland native here. Glad you enjoyed Maine. Great seafood all over the state.

Good tips for visiting the island. Haven’t been up to Portland since my tugboat brought a container barge up there about ten years ago.

Tanks for the video. It looks like an interesting place to visit.
