A poor man's Mercedes, drove this car to the prom, a 82 in brown metallic, with tan velour interior, my tuxedo was also brown, my dad loved this car, he loved playing with all the gadgets . He ended up buying 3 more maximas , a 88, 92, & a 2000, he's now in maxima heaven. RIP dad.💜

I just picked up an 1984 Maxima. I had an 1987 myself and my uncle had 1982 that still said Datsun.
The 1984 handled better than the 1987. Rear wheel drive makes a lot difference in that department. I'm told cheaper to fix too without CV axles and associated parts of front wheel drive.
Im told the engine is better . Both use the same engines of their respective sportier Z-Car. 1978-1984s used the same 2.8L in-line 6 that the 280Z/280ZX uses. 1985-1989s used the 3.0L V6 the 300ZX uses, transverse mounted for the Maxima.
Another car to consider is Toyota's answer to the Maxima of that era: the Toyota Cressida. Also a 4 door version to their answer to the Z-Car: the Toyota Supra with likewise the same engine and transmission types. Both are very good.
The Volvo 700 series is also good.
Weaknesses, the automatics in Toyotas and Nissans of that era weren't as good as their 5 speeds. If they drive well and shift well, fill and drain with a good synthetic and keep your eye on them.
The Volvo, keep your eyes on the fuel pumps, crank sensors and relays. Used to be a site about their turbobricks as these types are called.
Either one of those cars on the whole will serve you well

This was my first car. My dad was obsessed with these cars. We had 3 at one time. 1984 automatic gray and two 1983 manual on tan and the other gray. I had so much fun spinning out in a parking lot full of snow. I had fun with this car in high school. It taught me how to drive in the snows. Drifting in a wet parking lot.

I had my 1984 Nissan (Datsun) Maxima Sedan for 34 years. Sweetest car that I have driven and enjoyed and loved dearly.
My baby was Chocolate Brown with the digital green display and brown leather with the talking lady voice. Still have my 50th Anniversary Golden Key.
The cream beige white non metallic color sedan you have is in sweet condition. This car is a Four Speed Automatic... I would toggle the console switch on an off (above 30 or 35 MPH) to downshift. The plush pillow seats care sweet and my leather still looked good, no rips in the leather.
The look of the car is a classic. I would buy one today hands down A gem and truly driven, my first ride.

Yes, I think those were Nissan's heyday, the 1980s, into the early 1990s. And I liked their earlier cars like the 1968-73 Datsun 510, the 720 pickups, the Z cars, the Maxima and Stanza wagon.

We grew up with these cars here in the Caribbean. In Trinidad where I live, they are known as the Datsun Bluebird but they were mostly outfitted with the 1.8 OHC whereas the Nissan Laurel of the same era carried the 2.4L as featured in your video... Solid cars. Great video!

Armchair quarterback/product planner.....Nissan should have kept the Maxima as a rear drive sport sedan.. I suppose nowadays, one can get an Infiniti for that setup.

I went everywhere in that car: cross country, out of country (Windsor, Ontario Canada) & places I should not have been! this was my car except in brown. don't think mine had the voice thing but i remember the dash very well. my dad bought me the car new when i was in high school. very quiet as i remember. and the sunroof was a nice feature. the rear driver lock would never work right and the dealer never did fix it. i never got the cruise control working either. i drove it until the car was falling apart inside. the rear window didn't have any tinting so it would be extremely hot in the south with the sun shining right on me. and worst, the plastic piece above the driver's feet would just fall. i think i brought it into pep boys for problems more than i can count. i eventually traded it in for a new 2003 mazda tribute. so i had it for nearly 20 years.

The 1984 Maxima was the only year the rear-drive version was marketed as a Nissan (from 1981-83 it was marketed as a Datsun or, to be precise, "Datsun, by Nissan"). It was also the last year for the ancient 2.4L six-cylinder engine, whose origins date back to the 1970-73 240Z coupe but was first fuel-injected beginning with its use in the original 1977-80 Datsun 810 series.

1981 - 1983, you can get the even rarer LD28 Diesel 2.8 option in the maxima. And even rarer is that paired with a 5 speed. Which my 82 maxima has both ;)
