⁴ᴷ⁶⁰ AC Transit Tempo: Bus Rapid Transit Observations in Downtown Oakland (Opening Day)

  • For the first time ever, bus rapid transit (BRT) has found its way to the Bay Area. On August 9, 2020, the first in-service trips were made on AC Transit's brand-new 1T line, affectionately named "Tempo." We headed to Downtown Oakland for some initial bus and station observations.
Note: Due to COVID-19, we are not filming the full route just yet. That will come at a later date (promise!).
AC Transit's new Tempo line is the first instance of true bus rapid transit in the entire Bay Area (Line 522 operated by VTA technically doesn't count), running from San Leandro BART along International Boulevard to Uptown Oakland.
The project has been years in the making and was wrought with cost overruns and delays, but the result is an impressive execution of the Bay Area's first BRT system, connecting job centers with communities historically underserved by good transit options.
The 9.5-mile system runs entirely in bus lanes (except for a short stretch on Broadway in Oakland), and features 46 center-median and curbside stations. These platforms are equipped with station canopies, seating, door position markers, audio information, and real-time display boards.
The journey between San Leandro BART and Uptown Oakland takes 47 minutes. Operating along the route are 27 new 60-foot buses, manufactured by New Flyer. Unlike traditional articulated buses, these feature doors on both sides of the bus to allow for boarding at center-median stops. An extending platform gap filler juts out from the middle door, bridging the gap between the platform and the interior of the bus.
Tempo is one of the most frequent bus routes in the Bay Area, with buses arriving every 10 minutes 7 days a week from 6 am to 7 pm (although as you can see in this video, that schedule was not exactly adhered to on opening day).
Construction along the corridor began in August 2016, and opened exactly four years later, beating out other BRT corridors currently under construction along Geary and Van Ness in San Francisco. Despite being late to the party, the Bay Area appears set to become a model for modern bus rapid transit systems in the United States for years to come.

That scheme looks great! Wish the MTA out more work into their BRT routes like AC Transit appears to have done

campjay52 from the video, AC’s BRT system has doors on the left side of the bus, and their bus shelters seem to have maps and other useful information that the MTA’s “Select Bus Service” BRT doesn’t have on their shelters.

The reason why AC Transit made the BRT is because of Traffic on the busiest streets of Oakland and far beyond, and the other reason why the buses have doors on both sides because some bus stops are on the left lane or Middle Lane.

As you can see when this video was made AC Transit was not done with bus lanes so at the time I'm saying this- The bus lanes are now red.

For real, East Oakland, Emeryville and Hayward divisions aren’t the only ones gotta have the articulated buses. It would be nice Richmond got the articulate buses.

The funny thing is by the time the BRT actually started to run, the 3 door Van Hools they bought for this back in 2001 have already retired 😂

Wonder how long it’ll be before it’s so busy, it needs to be turned into a tram/light rail line

Thank you! The bus stops at center-median platforms along its route, which necessitates doors on both sides.
