Neji WAS a slave in early part 1, but not because he was meant to be one, but because he thought he HAD to be one, according to the past in which he thinks his father died for the sake of the main family. What you don't notice is that Neji died, yes, protecting Hinata, a member of the main family, but not because he HAD to, but because he WANTED to. He chose to die that way, not forced, finally understanding his father's decision.

Absolutely not, Neji's character growth is literally about his vision about destiny and shit be wrong after confronting Naruto and, after, discovering the truth behind his twisted past. Neji didn't die because he was destined to protect Hinata, but because he chose to, if y'all could just grasp this and not just trhowing superficial arguments you would understand more of him and his depth as a character.

I don’t know why he had to jump in front of the tree spikes. Couldn’t he just use the 8-Trigrams Rotation to deflect them? Or even the Revolving Heaven. His clan had several techniques devoted to deflecting projectiles!
