I was really disappointed when HB was canceled.
Headbangers ball was our TH-cam back then. I discovered so many bands I still listen today. So thanks for all the good years you gave us. It was a great time.

I have to admit that my whole Hard Rock life is and breathed Headbanger's Ball. All music was taken from MTV. Getting a video with Steelheart, The Almighty, Trixter, Sodom, Glorious Bankrobbers and many many more was like a bible in music for an impressionable thirsty Hard Rocker. I recorded every single music video and report on VHS and have over 150 VHS cassettes in the basement. Unfortunately no VHS player today. Have to buy a "new" one. The last one I had chewed up some cassette tapes with a loss of about: 6 hours of unfathomable Headbanger's Ball. So thank you as hell wonderful Vanessa for these wonderful years. You are forever eternally grateful.

Headbangers Ball was the best metal show I've ever watched. I started watching it in the late 80s and continued watching it in the 90s.
I remember that at that time I was studying and to get to the University from my hometown to another city I had to get up early in the morning. Headbangers Ball was broadcasted late in the evening, if you take into account the time difference, it was really late. I remember that watching the whole show meant that I would have four hours of sleep. But this show was so good that I never missed an episode! 🙂
And of course later with my friends we would talk about what we had seen, what new bands were coming out, that show was an important part of our lives. Actually, the whole MTV at that time was something amazing, totally innovative, full of passion, joy, positive energy. I miss that whole group of people from those years Ray Cokes, Steve Blame, Kristiane Backer and many, many others. Great production, lovely video montage, innovative jingles, relaxed, friendly atmosphere. Great stuff!
    Good to have you back!

Thank you so much for sharing your metal memories of HBB! I agree, they were such good times and MTV was so ground-breaking and had great VJs and presenters. It was a privilege to be a small part of that awesome team at such an important time in music!

I was just 12 years old at the time. Whenever my parents were away, I would secretly try to watch MTV Headbangers Ball in the middle of the night. Unfortunately, I didn't really succeed. Today, none of us can get MTV anymore. I would love to have all the old episodes uploaded somewhere. Some are on TH-cam.

I, as so many others, were devastated when Headbanger's Ball was cancelled. The show was the major source for new heavy music, along with some Swedish metal magazines. So many great bands I still listen to today discovered by watching the show and still got some VHS tapes, where especially the Black Sabbath 'Cross Purposes' tour special has been played to death. Thanks for sharing the reasons why it was cancelled, 'cause so many rumors have been circulated over the years, and keep up the amazing work!

I discovered Headbangers Ball as a teenager in the early 90s and never missed an episode, couldn't wait for Sunday nights.
The show got me into loads of bands and shaped my development into heavy metal. When Into the Pit was added thst started my fascination with extreme music with death and black metal still being my favoutite styles today. Thought you were absolutely brilliant on the show and always wondered what happened to you. Great that you can use the internet to host your own show and good to see you are looking great after all these years.

I started watching Headbangers Ball in 1994, I somehow started getting MTV here in Spain from some sort of cable TV we got when me & my family moved to a new flat then. I was 14 then, full-on metalhead wannabe. Discovering there was a Heavy Metal show on MTV every Sunday was quite the event! There was no internet, not much money to buy music, just magazines, tape-trading and some radio shows. I needed to find and consume new music everyday, so HBB meant the world to me! I used to record the show every Sunday and then, during the week, record my favourite videos to another VHS tape using a double-deck VCR I was fortunate enough to own. Like a compilation cassette, but on VHS! I was so sad when MTV dropped the show, and very confused (again, no internet). The following month I read a news blurb in a Spanish magazine about that, so I thought "oh well, so that's what happened". Thank you Vanessa for all the good times during my "metal formative" years, and the best of luck on TH-cam, I'm gonna be watching for sure! :)

It was my first job out of college and i was very nervous. You and the late Peter Dougherty were really nice to me and could see i was just starting out in animation. I hope all is well with you and no doubt you have gone on to a very successful career due to your amazing talent. x

@TrustinRock yes I did hear about Peter. I had just connected with him on Facebook before he died. He was such a nice guy - really patient with me on that first job. I did indeed continue in animation - for 30 years! I made a feature film recently that you might enjoy. It's got an 80s metal soundtrack - Saxon even re recorded a track for us. The film is called Chuck Steel : Night of the Trampires (it's not for kids!)
Thanks for giving me my first break! 👍🤘

Christ its good to see you back Vanessa! Every monday afternoon I would race home from school in The Netherlands, rewind the VHS tape for the timer taped show recorded the night before. 2 and a half hours of absolute pleasure. All the more because even back then metal was for "insiders" and you could feel that you were not alone, "everyone" in Europe was watching. I also enjoyed the more extreme Into the Pit show that was added later on. Regarding yourself, I was so impressed by the way you interviewed all those guys, very serious, always taking the music serious, not the "yeah yeah yeah hell yeah metal dumbass thing", and this is still today the way I enjoy the music. I never got the Americans with "their" HB and Ricki Rachtman or whatever his name was, always posing as a rockstar himself. Thank you for all those great moments and best of luck with your channel, Im sure it will be great!

It was very sad to see it just disappear like that it was somewhat the same grave disappointment all over again, that I'd felt back in the late '80s when Sky Channel folded and Monsters of Rock with Mick Wall ended as '88 drew to a close, music television just wasn't going to be the same anymore. It was an omnimous feeling and sign of uncool duller things to come, I sensed this right away as that decade ended and it suddenly seemed like all of popular music went in a totally different direction now. That all took some getting used to, thankfully Headbangers Ball came along some time after and filled that empty TV spot to warm all metal hearts again will great interviews and reports.

And ironically, TH-cam made MTV redundant! I'm old enough to remember how MTV wanted another Michael Jackson, so they heavily promoted and air-played Prince from 84-85 or so. Nothing against Prince, and he was an amazing talent; but he was also forced upon us wee kids in the 80s as we had no other channel. And admit it...Purple Rain album was extremely overrated, and actually kinda sucked anyway!

Headbangers Ball was total escapism that opened up the rock/metal world further. I've lost count of the bands that were introduced to me and the albums that I bought because of those videos. Of course I was gutted when it got cancelled, but I was also disappointed that Yo! and 120 Minutes were also scrapped - MTV developed my musical palate further. Soon MTV went down the shitter and became almost unwatchable. But I'm not ending this comment on a sour note - I had a Headbangers sweatshirt for sending in my request for that segment known as the Triple Thrash Treat. It came with a note from you, Vanessa, and I valued that note as much as that shirt but over time I've lost that note. Oh well.

big difference between how Headbangers Ball got canceled in the US and how it got canceled in Europe. In the US, they informed Riki via telephone, whereas with you, they called you down to the office and told you in person. Kind of a shame if you think about it. Were you hoping at some point down the road that you would be able to be a metal music presenter again after it all happened the way it did? And did they fully explain the reasons for why Headbangers Ball was being canceled as well?

Thank you for commenting. No, I didn't expect to be a rock presenter again. Those jobs are few and far between. It's only TH-cam that has allowed me to return and I've also done some rock presenting for Staccs TV/Staccs.com recently. It was the positive response I received to that that encouraged me to start my own channel. When the show was cancelled I was told that MTV was down-sizing and concentrating on reality - rather than music - programming. It certainly was the end of an era of great niche music shows. :(

Was gutted when MTV gor rid of all the music shows especially HBB. I stopped watching MTV after that as there was no point watching it and MTV decided to became a reality tv channel going against the name Music Television and its branding. There were other music channels that came and went in the 90s - 2000's. But none of them could ever match MTV Headbangers Ball show. The only other show worth watching was ITV's The Power Hour/Raw Power/Noisy Mothers which ended in 1995. Glad that you are back to tell the story.
