I found about 50 broken foils in a rubbish pile near my house and coincidentally there were two alloy guards as well. I had no idea that the alloy cups were related to the foils, I just took them because I liked the shape but found it odd that the hole in the guard wasnt in the centre.I saw that the foils were made of high grade steel as some had longitudinal fractures and all the others were broken at about 2/3 forward of the guards. The wires had me confused and the little button at the tip was a mystery. Then just by luck I looked inside the cups where there were a whole lot of stickers with fencing images and I realized what they were. Without the cups I would never have been able to figure out what all these metal shapes were. They nearly all had the stampPaul and a number on them.
lucky find.... the number usually indicates the size of the blade - a 5 is for adult and anything less is mini - or if it is incorporated in a shield engraving with the engraved FIE, that usually indicates a maraging blade (that is one made of the best quality steel usually to be used up to olympic level) ..
