Seriously my favorite part about 80s films why did they stop doing this....always gets you pumped up for the action!
First Avengers did that.
They're still doing it today.
This kind of thing is now reserved for superhero stuff.

For me, as a kid, it was the frontal nudity and the occasional {redacted} scene with montage music. But I can see the appeal of this as well. ;-)

Ripley's gearing up scene can't be any more beautiful. You can literally feel her fear, her lack of actual combat experience. But at the same time the absolute determination, the creativity when facing an unnatural situation, the adrenaline pumping in her body. James Cameron was a total beast back in the 80s and 90s.

It was the only one that had a time hack.
Rambo's gear would have been already ready. The countdown there was cheesy.
There was no rush that I remember.

Interesting thing about the Ripley scene. For years this scene was a blooper, but they fixed it for either the Blu-Ray or the Director's Cut (I forget which.) Originally she took a flamethrower off the rack, and laid down a pulse rifle. Then she took a pulse rifle off the rack and laid down the flamethrower. It's correct here.

Her character is sooo much better than the far fetched female action stars of today.

I would legit pay hella money to see an entire movie of jacked sweaty badass 80's action dudes just strapping up and locking and loading all the guns with the sweet 80's whammy guitar riffs and constant gun cocking sounds! HELL YEAH BROTHER!
And arm wrestling with oiled up arms ;)
If there's one thing Evil Dead pulls off with their gear up, it's a perfect one-liner. *Groovy*
Loved them all, but the Commando one with Big Arnie is still probably the most iconic of them all!

@@JayTidethe Rambo gear up scene is awesome, but when you think of a gearing up scene, most people imagine Arnie on a beach, locking and loading everything he has.
Ripley was just a warrant officer on a space tugboat but the aliens turned her into a wrathful war-goddess.
It's an awesome arc, genuinely
Same with Ash. He was just a housewares worker for a market, but the book of the dead turned him into a chainsaw handed demon killer.

@@lordaldo3273 And it was done right. She had to do this to survive. She had to do this to quell the nightmares. She saw the threat they were and couldn't let humanity suffer like her crew did. It was either step up or die like the rest. Hence why she was so willing to end herself when the queen was bursting her chest in 3. This is how you make a bad ass character, and Ellen Ripley is legendary.
Even loading film into a camera is enough to get me nodding in appreciation, with a “yeah”.

Disagree when you put up the scenes from Commando and Rambo side by side, Commando seems like satire and Rambo like a documentary
Awesome. I actually loved Ripley's scene - even back then, I thought the idea of duct taping the rifle and flame thrower together was a rad idea. Truly a great character. Sly and Arnold are always amazing.
Did not expect Evil Dead, but as soon as I saw the first parts, i was elated

The whole scene is just awesome, you can feel the pressure almost if it was real, such an amazing performance and great work with the make up, the sweat, the atmosphere, everything together make that part of the movie perfect.
The Ash sequence is made all the better for him making the chainsaw hand.

My personal favorite comes from the original Dawn of the Dead when they reach the gun shop. Classic.

I always loved how Ripley just, like, duct taped a couple of guns together to make one super gun. Space Redneck ingenuity, right there.
Even moreso, in the book someone looks at her creation and states it violates at least 50 safety regulations. Ain't redneck unless it's dangerous to the wielder too.

All great action movies, thriller movies, monster movies, and supernatural horror films need scenes like this.
Ripley gearing up just hits different, knowing what she’s going to fight and who she’s fighting to save.
She is frightened yet determined, Ripley is still the strongest female character and none had come close to her even after 40 years. Holywood today just misses the point by giving manlike-masculine traits to female characters to make them look strong but instead they look ridiculous.
That Ripley scene is a 10/10.

I love that deep breath that Ripley takes right before the elevator opens. It’s such a little thing that just communicates so much. It’s like “WTF am I doing here? Please don’t cry, try not to panic. Deep breath, THIS IS HAPPENING, and WE are doing it. Ok. Time to get to fucking work.”
Sounds so satisfying when everyone gears up. I'm sure we all can relate to these scenes in how way or some form.
These scenes reminds me a lot of my Resident Evil video game days. When playing RE1, RE2, RE3 and RE4 fighting the bosses, I geared up like crazy especially on hard mode where it only takes 2 hits to bring your health down to red. Stock up on my 1st spray, carry all my handgun bullets, carry 7 rounds of my magnum, bring a few explosive grenades, and bring one big weapon to the fights. End up using them all too because i love the difficult and challenge of the bosses.

That 3rd scene is from Raw Deal. Lot of people don't like that movie, but it's fucking boss.
It makes Arnold look like Freddie Mercury without a mustache.
aliens gear up actually made sense for the story, the rest are just cool lol.

Ripley using a Loading Dock Exoskeleton to fight the Xenomorph Queen was ultra badass.

The musical flair on Ripley coking the grenade launcher is peak.
Commando featured THE 1st appearance of a Desert Eagle as a sidearm. Plus James Horner’s score was great.

Commando is one of the greatest movies ever made. I also love how even the slightest touch of a gun in these scenes makes a huge click sound. Even them just picking it up.

There's just something about those foley sounds that has a distinct charm to them.

Ripley's gearing up scene is the best..... but right behind it is Ash (from Evil Dead 2) and the first Arnie on from Commando.
in Rambo II, even loading the film into the camera gives that same feel

The most badass part of Arnold's Commando scene is that he's going into battle with brand new boots. Lesser men would be crippled by pressure points and blisters after few hundred yards.
I could be wrong, but I believe Rambo First Blood: Part II was the very first "Gear Up" scene in an action movie. If not, it definitely set the trend.
One my favorite scenes was in Predator 2, when Mike Harrigan (Danny Glover) was gearing up for the showdown with the Predator, i thought it was awesome!
I served in the army in the 90s. Infantry. Based off the back of these 80s films we all used to make a real show of getting kitted up. It was always good for a laugh.
Ending it with one of the best lines ever uttered in the history of the world was a good decision.

I almost fell out of my chair laughing at Ripley’s rig. She went from no combat or weapons training whatsoever to just throwing together a weapons gumbo cocktail that would give James Bond a raging hard on. Savant level crazy fast learner. Definition of “I was shown one time.” James Cameron did his homework. He is one with the prep time.
I remember in kindergarten back in 1986 I was Grunt from G.I. Joe for Halloween at school and my mom painted my face like Arnold in Commando.
I play this scene in my head. When i go fishing.

Honestly, I think that the attachment was the grenade launcher underneath lol. But yeah, it would have been handier if the Marines were able to put the heartbeat monitors on their rifles instead.

The lack of Wilford Brimley's scene from Ewoks: The Battle for Endor is a stark omission.
0:12 it’s the fact that a Deagle looks like a reasonable sidearm when it’s strapped to Arnold.
And normal sized.............he actually fired a few rounds from it when the rocket launcher was emptied LoL

Honestly Ripley in Alien is how you portray woman as a badass main character, she didn't start as a weapon weilding soldier but her experience is what led her to become hardened unlike movies these days where main character woman are just badass from start because they are just like that.
The Kurgan assembling his sword in Highlander is a good one too. Way to introduce a villain.
