Millbank filtration is through capillary action, not gravity and fine weave, which is why you soak it first too.
As an even fast super-quick tripod tie I use a Canadian jam knot - cinches in seconds, holds tight enough to support the weight of a light cooking pot or billy-can, and comes off in seconds. Especially good with bank line.
Great tip on making the tripod Dave. The millbank bag has a line on it for the reason of first filling the bag to the top by pulling the bag through the water or using a pot to pour water into the bag. Then you want to let the water run down to the line. That way by the time the water gets to the line, the contaminated water has dripped off the outside of the bag and it's ready to put your pot or container under the bag to star collecting the water. Milbank bag in the uk. I got one but never used it. You just never know when you will, it's so small it fits in kit perfectly.

Erm, you DO want to fill the bag ABOVE the line, actually, you want to fill it entirely, then let it drain down to the line, BEFORE you start collecting water for usage. Doing it that way, the outside of the bag is rinsed.
If you only fill to the line, the particulate on the outside of the bag goes into your "potable" water, making it significantly less potable.
Hi P.H., just to alleviate your concerns, the Brown (or Milllbank) bag was / is designed to filter out turbid water, to clarify the water, removing floating debris, insects, sand and grit from the water. Dave did say to let the bag drip a while first before letting it drip into his clean container. The bag does not filter out Pathogens, Bacteria, or Viruses, which is where the boiling the water part becomes effective, which Dave does over the fire with the tripod set up. The outside of the bag was drenched in the same turbid water, but, wiping the outside of the bag manually before pouring the turbid water is the better solution to prevent debris and floaties falling into the container. As for the "let it flow a while first" part, that's to allow the material in the bag to swell enough to filter out the finer debris. It's the boiling part that makes the water potable. Most boiled bugs are safe to ingest by the way. ;-)
umm, my millbank bag says fill to the top, don't collect water until it drains / filters down to the line, it's not a fill to here line - the theory being that any unfiltered contamination on the outside of the bag will have dripped off (yes i know this wasn't the focus of the video)
Hi Neil, please see my response above to Mr.hansen. The Millbank bag is saturated in the same dirty water as that which you put in, so the outside should be wiped by hand after it is saturated. Filling the bag to the line, or only half-full is not the issue. You let the bag drip (as Dave said) for a while so the bag fibers swell more, before allowing it to drip into your container to boil the clarified water to kill Pathogens, Bacteria and Viruses that may be present. Boiling the water makes it safe to drink, not filtering in a Millbank bag. Hope that helps.

The cut-off bottom portion of a Levi’s pant leg works well for this task. Just hem the top and sew across the bottom in a V shape and presto. zero cost alternative and works pretty well.
I happened to have a big rubber o ring that I found that I use in the same fashion just wanted to share this with everybody. Easy storage also.

Would you turn the bag inside out alternating with every other use to keep the canvas clean, kinda like reverse flow maintenance on some of the store bought water filters.
I have a quick tripod lash that may be a good idea but then again you have alot more experience than me just would like to share it with you

Dave, thanks for this. I can think of several applications for this fast tripod lashing method.
But, I do have a question about the 'clove hitch' that you tie. I posted the same question on Corporals Corner but did not get a response. I have looked on his knot tying videos and there, he ties a clove hitch, but on his other videos, he ties a 'Single Constrictor Knot' which is a great not and that seems to be the same as what you tied here.
With the CH, you end up with the bitter end and the main portions parallel with each other. But, on the SCK, they are definitely not parallel, but twisted together.
In the sailing world the Constrictors, both the single and the double are used in situations where one might consider using a hose clamp to make a repair. They can be tied on a splitting wooden tiller or even on a splitting wood mast. A well tied Double usually cannot be untied and must be cut off.
I use the SCK to quickly 'whip' 3-strand rope, among other things.
Please hear this as feedback and not criticism.
For some reason Dave and his crew (I saw the same in one of his "tip of the week videos) tie a constrictor knot (going under the entire "X") and call it a clove hitch. A true clove hitch does not go under the "X". You are correct about a clove hitch paralleling the "X". At least that is what all the knot books say to do.
backwoodstrails, thanks for the response. As I hope I made clear, the constrictor knot is a great knot, and I think that it should be included in any basic knots course. But, I can tie a clove hitch in the dark, just by feel, but for a constrictor, I have to see that 'x' to slide the end under.
In scouts we were also taught how to tie a bowline with one hand, and like the clove hitch, it can be a lifesaver when a critical situation arises. I have imagined hanging onto a sailboat with one hand and tieing myself onto a halyard with a bowline, with the other hand, so the crew can winch me aboard.

Many years ago i had a millbank bag, low tech solution but pretty effective,
... they were for troops serving in the far east jungles during ww2,
but they were invented in a hospital so maybe that explains the horrible
lime green color they came in.
