I had the 4 door version of this when I was stationed in Germany, the model 2000. I had twins in 1983 and needed the extra 2 doors. It was a 1972, my first car. The original steering wheel was huge! I remember it being very light. It was a fun 4 speed manual. You always remember your first.
Thanks for this guys. I went seriously into debt in 1973 for a new 2002. I was 19 at the time, and was putting off college for a couple of years. In Oshawa, Camaro’s, Chevelle’s and Chevy Vans were the main ride for my buds. I was odd-man-out with the Bimmer, but I loved it. BTW, gotta have the round taillights, but this is a sweet car!
My very first car was a baby blue 75. One of the best cars I ever had. I have owned a 72, 74 and 75. I regret selling them. It may seem silly but I think of them often. What a great car!
I had a new one in 1976, polaris silver, cibie driving lights, etc. These cars were absolute GAME CHANGERS for that time. They were great commuter/every day drivers. Great view out. Handled amazingly well for the time. Decent mileage.
Im 22 years old and just got my hands on one of these things. Breathtakingly beautiful car and a blast to drive around town. And the insurance is next to nothing.
I have just pulled the trigger on a beautiful, completely restored 1970 2002 to add to the stable. I keep having to pinch myself to make sure I’m not dreaming 😆
It's always fun to me watching the reactions of those guys testing old BMWs.... "hey you can actually feel the road"... "man this is fun".... etc etc etc.... it makes me wonder what pieces of modern sh*t they got used to if they react like that. And BTW my daily drive is a manual 1976 E21.
I bought a 2002 in 1976, sort of on a whim. I’d bought a Mini 1275GT but hated it. Was driving past a local garage in Hampshire, saw a BMW 2002 and pulled in. Didn’t know much about them but took it for a test drive and was hooked. For their time, they jumped out as a driver’s car, way above other small saloons. I did a trade on the spot. Drove all over UK and France. Wish I’d kept it.
i still remember my grade school buddy that returned to town at 16 with his new drivers license and his dads orange with round taillights 2002 BMW. he took me for a ride and i've never forgotten it. my dad's buick le sabre and VW didn't handle like that! i was dumbfounded!
awe, reminds me of moms 1976 2002 turbo. it was a purple lush blue. she adored her little baby though she had a 320i, and her beloved 1991 super celiac and 1974 triumph stag but she was head over heals for her 76 2002 turbo. she left it at her sisters house but couldn’t return to pick it up. moms heart broke when she found out her sister just left moms barely used 2002 to rot until it became a rusted mess. it sadly added to her depression that cost her her life. her 2002 was her play car. it was barely used and even as a child, it was obvious to me that the car that was over a decade old, to my 4 year old mind, was very new, loved and even i knew mom had modded some aspects while still leaving it in mostly original condition. i would like to think that in some other world, mom is still racing her little 02.
NedFo72 btw mine smokes a bit too, had an oil leak out of an exhaust header thread. I'm looking at an engine rebuild in the near future too. (I put the smoky comment on the video just for new to '02ers so they don't think they always smoke). Id be happy to delete it if you would like. Beautiful beautiful car.
You get one of those and build a motor(or replace w/a BMW 6) and upgrade the brakes and suspension, you'll wan to keep it forever. OLD Bimmers , gotta love them !!!
Owned and Restored three of these in a row, a '74, '76 (avoid the '75 due to emissions) and a '74tii which just resold on BaT in 2020 for $25,000. Excellent fun spacious cars to drive, but not durable. If you use them everyday, things will break - driveshafts/differentials/exhausts/seals/wheel bearings/couplers etc. Best upgrade needed is a fifth gear in manuals, which many swap out of a e30 3 series. This one on the shoot needs a ring/valve job - burning a lot of oil with the blue smoke. If buying, check for rust in trunk, shock towers, jack points, floor pans - they are terrible with rust.
Had a '69 2002 as one of my first cars. What a blast!!! It was like a road worthy go Kart. We got a flat on a back road, my friend and both of our girlfriends. I loosened the lugs, positioned the spare beside the car and my buddy and me lifted the car from the rear bumper while the girls swapped the tyres. Fast pit stop in the middle of no where.
Very very nice review guys 👍 I made my first “donut” in my friends car back when I was 18 - and it wasn’t even my intention 😂 (it was raining) Thank you both so much for taking this 49 year old boy back in time 😉 Best regards Morten from Denmark
On my second 02,,,,,I've got my big, go fast in a straight line GTO and my nimble little 02 for those days I wanna feel the road. A real drivers car and a lot of fun on nice cool days!
I own a 1969 BMW 2002 and a 2011 Mustang GT. The 02 is not about lap times, it's about riding the curves like you ride a wave in the ocean. You just go with it. I have some vids in my channel if anyone wants to see them. I have a broken finger so I can't really drive it at the moment because the lack of power steering.
These M10 engines tend to smoke on engine braking at higher RPM, when the valve stem seals are worn. Easy fix and not a critical problem. They also tend to run quite hot (cast iron block, mechanical fan), when driven hard, so that's something to look after. I almost boiled it on the race track, when I didn't pay attention and the coolant temperature was in the red zone for 12-15 kms. No harm done. th-cam.com/video/tqEW0TOXC0s/w-d-xo.html It's funny that you mentioned the spongy brakes. They're rock hard, and have a definite biting point on mine (4 pot ATE calipers in the front from the factory). I've got DOT 5.1 brake fluid, but after all it's a 200000 kms, unrestored car.
@@rogernilson3986 Mine did that too, but I noticed during the rebuild this summer, that most of the coolant passages were clogged rock hard. After cleaning the block and the radiator, and assembling the engine, it did not overheat ever, even in 30°C stop and go with the original mechanical fan.
@@tave9011 it’s not too bad but the heads gotta come off. And frankly if you’re gonna replace the stem seals, replace the stems too. In theory it’s possible to do a stem seal job without taking the head off but in my opinion you’re just making it harder on yourself to do less of a job. If you’re around Sonoma CA, call road rockets at Sonoma raceway. You want Bill.
@03:38 This is typical of the 02 series. The only thing you normally have to do is change the valve-stem rubber seals. That's all. These are the best handling, most predictable, potent cars I've ever driven back in the days. And they sure have not lost it. Having to choose between a 2002 and a 320 series, I would gladly take the 2002 any day.👴🤷♂
THE ONE for me. Always has been, always will be. I owned a 1974 2002 and is the only car I wish to this day I had never sold. The love of this car is tied to the absolute love of a man who took our family in while my father deployed to Korea back in the early 70s. While others dream of Porsche, Ferrari or whatever, my ultimate vehicle remains the 2002.
Well, my 2009 Fiat Panda 1.2 has only 60hp and runs on 155mm 13" weels and it's still deviously fun to hoon it everywhere. This thing's a friggin racecar in comparison.
I owned a 1974 BMW 2002, with a 4 speed stick. The best and most fun car i ever owned. Reliable, practical and fast and fun... An absolute BLAST to drive! i regret selling it and getting newer models.... The 320i a real downgrade, then a E36 325i much better but they just never felt the same as the 2002 and they were less reliable than the 2002... Also the 2002 was only car i owned for over 10 years which NEVER broke down on me!
People are often amazed by the room once they get in. It looks like a tiny box, but lots of head and foot room. People would also be amazed when I'd pull 4 or 5 tires out of the trunk. As for the brakes, I put the volvo 240 brakes (if you have the 5 line master cyl) on the front end and 81 320i brakes in the rear (only 1/4 inch clearence in the mag rims) That thing had great brakes. Steering should be great, unless you have the wrong rims and or need to adjust the front end.
My first car............then I got a 1987 VW GTI 8v and kept it to 2003...............parts were a bit out of budget at the time for 1987 to fix and take time to fix the 2002...................fast forward to now 2024 retirement time and I want to restore or purchase this car....................nostalgia is something.
Of all the cars I've owned the one I want back the most is my '75 2002. Remember that you're driving a 40 year old car! In stock form I would put it up against ANY American made car of the era and it will out handle it on windy mountain roads. My 2¢...
I bough a 2002ti back in 1973 and to put it into content you have consider what was on the road at the time. Vegas, Pinto's VW golf I guess the closest to the 2002 was the Datsun 510 When l first drove mine l was totally impressed with it And for the most part, have been driving BMW's ever since Had all the older M cars Just recently l bought a 1973 2002tii that needs a little TLC but can't wait to get it on the road!
As a serial -02 owner back-in-the-Days I'd say these cars were way more satisfying nimble and revvy than the Specimen in Yr Vid. Probably a less well set up Car from what I can tell...

Interesting choice on the front bumper tuck. Why get rid of the rubber accordions without getting rid of the US bumper? Either way, great video and great car.
I do love the production value, the commentary, the cinematography. I've been listening and watching to you guys for years, sent in a car debate to the podcast and bought a number of your films. One little teeny, tiny, gripe - overly epic music. Unfortunately its present with a lot of the videos. The music. 2:24-2:31. It sounds like an action movie, this is a car overview. I'm good with the ambient piano or light rock guitar... The epic stuff is good for when top gear is going to the north pole or reaching 250mph in a buggati... This... Is great. Great production value. Even top gear worthy shots. But its not crazy epic. Sorry guys, rant over.
Owner here. Taking donations for the new setup... lol the car is down with a cracked subframe and it'll be getting new brakes and suspension while I'm at it
NedFo72 were they that that rough with it in filming!? 😉 totally kidding.. Sorry to hear about that, but gorgeous car and thank you for letting them share it with us.
I did one back in the 90's...BMW CCA 's Roundel featured a blue one w/a great set up that can be done on a budget. 3 series wheels / breaks / 5 spd. / early IS Recaros, Eibach progessives, Bilsteins and heavy sway bar / poly bushings / tower braces front and rear. Bought all 2nd hand except the bushings and springs. Also mounted battery in trunk. Very comfy daily driver and great on the curves. Had rt. around a grand in parts. Cosmetics - euro rear bumper, eliminated front bumper and mid-body chrome added front air dam w/2" rubber skirt, charcoal grey respray ... should have never sold it!!
I enjoyed this review although it was revealing that you both said what a fun car it is but you would not own one! I have a neighbour who has a dark green one that has been in his garage for at least 27 years now and never driven in that time. I keep telling him to get the gas drained, replace the tires and take it out.
BWX just judging by the modifications/compression/etc. It actually runs very well! It's a daily in the summer months. Valves are a little old but m10s are very prone to smoking. Valve seals would do the trick but it's not worth fixing at this point. Only smokes when it's pushed really hard in the top end
You mean engine breaking, which nearly puts as much load as throttling. You obviously have zero mechanical knowledge. My 76 does the exact same thing and has been nothing but great. dyno'd at 135 to the wheels with cam and dcoe webers.
What a great-looking car...slow, yes, and probably not that exciting to drive, but the classic look is superbe, and the cool factor is definitely 10/10
I'd like to have one now, except I don't think many of them came with air conditioning. And on the muggy hot east coast, that won't fly for a daily driver. What's with all that smoke?
I still don’t understand the concept of “chuck-able.” I mean kinda... but, not really. Especially given the context of the term this video. (Chucking the car into corners, hard?) Does “chucking” mean burning oil? Because that, I actually can see. 🤔😂😎
In 1969 I became the second owner of an international orange BMW 2002ti, the European model, with twin Solex sidedraft carburetors, producing 120BHP. Fun to drive, but not reliable. The transmission, clutch, and radiator failed.
Only downside to a car like this is the behemoth trucks and SUV on American roads today that would crush this like a paperbag that said my old 63 f100 stepside and 64 GTO wouldn't fare much better.
I had the 4 door version of this when I was stationed in Germany, the model 2000. I had twins in 1983 and needed the extra 2 doors. It was a 1972, my first car. The original steering wheel was huge! I remember it being very light. It was a fun 4 speed manual. You always remember your first.
100 HP was a really good amount for the late 60s to mid 70s! Especially for something so lightweight.

23 MPG at 100 MPH and 128 mph top speed stock

There is burning oil there. The exhaust normally is not that smoky.
Big E it could definitely use a valve rebuild. Super old engine and definitely burns oil. The m10s are inherit for burning oil though on the top end
Only smokes when you're really pushing it and engine braking. Once it really needs it I'll rebuild it haha

NedFo72 I’m curious to see if this is my old 02, do you know if she ever lived in NC?
Nice classic although I think this one was in the Rio mission of Driver 2 for the Playstation.
Real 2002's have ROUND taillights!
I had a 73 the most fun car to drive I've ever had.
My first car was a 73' 2002 turbo. But my seats held me in place.
I enjoyed this review although it was revealing that you both said what a fun car it is but you would not own one! I have a neighbour who has a dark green one that has been in his garage for at least 27 years now and never driven in that time. I keep telling him to get the gas drained, replace the tires and take it out.
Great drive. Any chance you can do a Volvo P1800 since you are doing the classics?
great vid , beautiful roads!
3:13 Originally had about 100HP, this one might pull 115HP.. LOL. What makes you think that? Looks like it runs like crap.
BWX just judging by the modifications/compression/etc. It actually runs very well! It's a daily in the summer months. Valves are a little old but m10s are very prone to smoking. Valve seals would do the trick but it's not worth fixing at this point. Only smokes when it's pushed really hard in the top end
.....Or when letting off and coasting.... :-/
BWX well yeah that's it haha engine braking after pushing it at 4000+ rpm
You mean engine breaking, which nearly puts as much load as throttling. You obviously have zero mechanical knowledge. My 76 does the exact same thing and has been nothing but great. dyno'd at 135 to the wheels with cam and dcoe webers.
Braking*
such a sick car
My first..very used. Steered like a go kart ...always started
If I was to buy a old car to baby, this would be the car I buy. I love these cars.
What a great-looking car...slow, yes, and probably not that exciting to drive, but the classic look is superbe, and the cool factor is definitely 10/10
Francis Raveneau 55555
My Dad had one & i stll mis it. A very good looking car
Reminds me of Palo Alto in the 80’s
BURNT OILS !!!
I'd like to have one now, except I don't think many of them came with air conditioning. And on the muggy hot east coast, that won't fly for a daily driver. What's with all that smoke?
I had one like this... it was my first 'real' car.
Great video guys! I'm thinking about getting a 2002 as a classic to pair along side my e46 M3.
Driver's Side I'm thinking of getting an e46 m3 to pair with my 2002! Or an e39 m5...
NedFo72 Either would be great! I believe they are both modern classics. I did a review of my e46 M3 on my channel if you need some help deciding!
What did you say? O2?
Ive got one exactly like that.
I love my 2002
That’s a good motor. Swap in a set of cams.
Michael Broski Only one cam for the early M10's.
I think the head gaskets on the way out !
Hello from Utah!
This was a fun video :)
I still don’t understand the concept of “chuck-able.” I mean kinda... but, not really. Especially given the context of the term this video. (Chucking the car into corners, hard?) Does “chucking” mean burning oil? Because that, I actually can see. 🤔😂😎
Review the kia stinger
Epic car
I love it 😍 it’s my 🚘 1975
In 1969 I became the second owner of an international orange BMW 2002ti, the European model, with twin Solex sidedraft carburetors, producing 120BHP. Fun to drive, but not reliable. The transmission, clutch, and radiator failed.
SLLYT None of those things are problems with them any more.
The name led me to believe this was made in 2002 😅
Hell if you put a GM Ecotec in it you could daily drive it
Better to drive than an e30
I LIKE IT
No, no, no. That’s too much 💨. It’s not just on the down-shifts. 🤔
Only downside to a car like this is the behemoth trucks and SUV on American roads today that would crush this like a paperbag that said my old 63 f100 stepside and 64 GTO wouldn't fare much better.
