Cliff Stewart a NASCAR owner in the 70’s and 80’s commented one time that NASCAR was the only circus in town where the clowns paid to be in the show. Nothing has changed.
That's a good quote
Nobody is making them participate…
@@bonesdoes6142 Nobody said anybody was making them participate. They have a right to be upset if they don't like the way the sport is going because it is a long-term investment for most successful teams.
Geoff Bodine won CUP rookie of the year driving for Cliff Stewart in 1982 beating out Mark Martin
That would be interesting if it were a circus or anything like a circus.
The product is entirely different.
People race because they want to and they love it. It's supposed to be expensive
Might as well just call it a charter disagreement at this point
True true
Good point!
Nascar just signed the most lucrative tv deal in its history. Its time for them to cough up some money for these teams.
Exactly
Who said they aren't?
@@RippingItAllSportsCardsThe team owners said they aren't. The teams opened thier books for NASCAR and the tracks to see but NASCAR and the tracks have refused to do the same.
@@RippingItAllSportsCardsthe drivers. Are you not paying attention? It’s why there is an issue they are trying to negotiate.
@@RippingItAllSportsCardsthe teams and drivers. Nascar's revenue sharing with the teams is peanuts while Nascar and the tracks (mostly owned by Nascar) are making money hand over fist.
Nascar full speed season 2: staring Timmy Hill BJ Mcleod David Starr Josh Bilicki
Don't forget TBD!!!
honestly....I would be real interested in this, like more interested then the top guy. get to know the small guys and gals that are just trying to make it, just trying to get to the next week and keep doing what they love
Ha ha that’s funny 😂😂
Now that's funny right there.
Could we see Morgan Shepherd in a Cup car again?
Blocking sovereign investment is a very good thing. Sportswashing is a way for authoritarian regimes to buy good publicity and engage in soft propaganda to paint themselves as something better than they are. It keeps NASCAR's hands a little cleaner and doesn't invite media controversy and/or needing to suddenly dump sovereign investors for something they do.
Remember not too far back in the 90’s when Nascar was about filling a field of the 43 fastest cars with a straightforward points/driver-owner payout system.
Now there’s charters, maintaining a politically correct media/social presence (maintaining good face with sponsors), playoff waivers and other factors drivers/teams have to worry about that are not “physically” part of the on track racing.
You hit the nail on the head. Yes. So correct. Need drivers wrenching cars, owner-drivers, (like rudd and DW in the past) 50+ cars trying to make the Daytona 500.

If you guys don’t have Flo Racing it’s worth the money. Cars Tour. Lucas oil late models. High limit. Something great on every night almost.
@TyeWills Amsoil Off Road is Great on Flo! Wyatt Miller two second place finishes in his first two races!
They also post the races (some at least) on their TH-cam channel
I think Suarez deserves some recognition for his weekend win too. He’s now won a race in 3 different Nascar series this year.
Agreed and he's the 1st Nascar driver to win in 3 different countries hosting Nascar
Wait i wasn't informed of this what die he win?
@heyogie3840 he won Race 2 of the weekend although in race 1, he finished 1st buthad a 5 second penalty for contact and ended 4th, race 3 he fought to keep the lead but with 5 minutes to go he lost the lead and tried to fight it but ultimately finished 3rd.
THEY NEED TO GET THE DEAL DONE! I’m starting to get a little upset that they aren’t agreeing . They better get it done soon
Me freaking too
may get to the point where some of the teams might say screw it and go make their own racing league. very small chance but not impossible
Where do they broadcast world of outlaws?
@@jamesmcallister8124Why not? Indycar did it.
@@michaelcrane2475 yeah and it damaged the sport so badly that Indycar is now essentially the 3rd most popular motorsport in America and even that is potentially up for debate
it nearly killed american open wheel racing and before that Indycar was the most popular motorsport in america
NASCAR may be that right now but its ratings and relevancy aren't what it used to be
in its current state NASCAR cannot afford a split or at least one that was as long as Indycar's
The ARCA race was really good, Isabella Robusto and Toni Breidinger put on one hell of a good show.....
What did Toni Breidinger do? Oh thats right she got lapped in the first part of the race and didnt run much better after that. She didnt put on anything at all. Give credit to the ones who did and it wasnt her. Shes as big of a joke as fallie deegan is maybe even a bigger one.
I like Eric being a one man band. Makes him way more genuine. 👍
I think Dale jr and Kelley, after their dealings with Theresa, would proceed with caution in regards to outside investers.
So, team owners say they are losing money every year and investors are looking at that and saying I want some of that? Something doesn’t add up.
no it doesn't. if the teams really are losing that much money, they wouldn't stay open PERIOD.
They "lose" money after taking EXORBITANT salaries. They're all filthy rich, clearly. The "losses" are basically tax evasion. Thank the lawyers and lawmakers, source of all the world's issues.
not all teams are in the series to make a profit in the traditional sense. some have never made a profit but have made that up in other areas that access to NASCAR provides. There are many reasons for people to want to own a NASCAR team and those reasons are varied and vast.
@@ChuckHickl key word is "traditional sense" they ARE making money somewhere or they wouldn't be doing it.
This sounds like a repeat of 2007/08 when a bunch of investors bought Petty and Evernham.
I had a friendly back and forth with a co-worker that was a huge Petty fan in that era. When Boston Ventures bought into Petty Enterprises, I always called them Boston Vultures. He didn't like it but knew it was true.
@@bobbbobb4663 bought in and immediately fired Kyle Petty as CEO and shortly after kicked him out of the 45 car
the netflix show got a few of my friends into nascar, so i'd definitely be sad to see it pared down/disappear without enough access to teams. it seems like it's good for other motorsports fans too. i don't like seeing people saying 'don't care---didn't watch' because it's not for you, really. it's a really great intro to the series imo and beats out drive to survive in just about every department... 23xi was the perfect team to follow for the first season
Well said
2311 sucks get them out .
As the Sovereign funds go (IMO), if NASCAR doesn't ban them, Saudi Arabia will end up "owning" the sport. The "house" always wins, and they have enough money to BE the house. As far as the charters go, NASCAR has the most "power" and permanent charters means they will lose some power, and they ain't signing that piece of paper.
I'm tired of foreign investors owning American companies.
Dale Jr has said that he doesn’t want to invest the time it would take to run a cup team the right way. He would rather spend the time w his family. He made the comments on his pod cast maybe a month or two ago
And Kelly also said that to the Kenny Wallace show
If you ask me that's proof NASCAR's business model is broken if Dale Jr don't want a Cup team!
IMSA at road America was a blast this Sunday
I have finally climbed onboard the death bus
There will be no charters next season. Maybe a deal gets done mid-season, but I don't see it happening in time anymore
I don't see some of the legacy teams racing without an agreement, at least not full-time, Danny's already said so
Love the shirt. Mark Martin was everything right with racing.
Mark Martin was the purest racer I can think of, I get so much nostalgia remembering him sitting in the car with his elbow on the steering wheel.
Brendan buttter bean and the cars tour have been mentioned by Eric my dream I think you need to really consider covering the z max cars tour it’s really good racing series and the best in late model stock car racing for the southeast region
I'm still hoping that NASCAR doesn't get pulled into the whole Middle Eastern money pot like what's happening right now with Formula 1. Big oil tycoons coming in and sponsoring entire teams, tracks, and trying to basically buy the series is not good for the health of the sport. I know that more money is always good, but I just don't want NASCAR to get roped into being all about the money and send the hardcore fanbase packing even more than they already have.
Hardcores are old
Since Denny and 23/11 were quite prominently featured in last years Nexflix film it's a safe bet a different team will be the focus this year. 23/11 would be mentioned in passing only. I'm a Denny fan but this is just another example of Denny's tendency towards meaningless threats....."I'm gonna boycott the thing I'll hardly appear in anyway, you'll be sorry"
The deal to stop Saudi Arabia is a good one! Those of us watching F1 are totally over all the BS with the Middle East… F1 is losing its core races due to increasing costs and corporate greed, and the US and Middle East are the places picking up. And they’re not even going to good tracks… Miami and Las Vegas tracks suck, as does Abu Dhabi. Saudi Arabia’s track is only good because it is so fast, COTA and Bahrain are the only good tracks, but Bahrain is suffering from the same problem Barcelona suffered from a few years back with pre-season testing…
F1 is a European and world wide sport. They need to focus on their key markets. Whilst I understand the US demand, the Middle East doesn’t give a crap and is enticing fans that can’t afford to attend European races just to fill the stands by offering incredibly cheap ticket prices AND flights…
NASCAR cannot afford to let Saudi investment firms get into NASCAR, because they have no interest in NASCAR for anything more than making money. They will run the sport dry in order to make a quick dollar…
I have to disagree with Vegas being bad. Vegas was one of the best races last year.
@@JG3RTR it was but many are still sour over the PR nightmare that was the off the track controversy and the piss poor track preparation that went on
F1's gonna have to improve that whole event sooner rather than later if they wanna win back people regarding it
Great show very interesting information. I watch every episode love your take on NASCAR.
For the charter deal to get done, the teams needed leverage and props to 23XI for getting some.
Can NASCAR and the Teams just get this crap figured out bruh I just wanna watch racing cmon
Guaranteed the teams won’t boycott one single race. Can run their mouths all they want. NASCAR has been down that road before and look how that worked out for the teams.
This is the only nascar breakdown channel that I enjoy except for DirtyMo. Really great job, Eric. Thanks so much for the content.
even then if the big teams and drivers don’t participate, it would be kind of cool to see what it’s like being a back marker driver or team and the struggles that come with it.
If they can find common ground and get revenue right you may even see 43 cars on the track again one day
No, you won't. The charters have choked out all the independent entries. Non-charter cars get a small fraction of the purse money that charter cars get.
@@GrandpaSharkwe need to fix the charter system so it's WAY CHEAPER AND EASIER for independent teams to show up and grab a charter and join the sport. The Top 35 rule should've never changed in my opinion. Now it's to where nobody can come in and have success without forking over a shit ton of money
@@isaiahmarker407 I agree with that. Right now, 15 teams own the 36 charters, & they don't want anyone else playing in their sandbox.
Hi Eric Estepp I never miss a single episode ❤
connor zilisch is a very impressive young man speaks very well for his age and can wheel as well!
You forgot to mention Daniel Suarez who won his heat race in the Brazil series. He's the forest driver ever to win in 3 NASCAR international in the same year🇺🇸🇲🇽🇧🇷. And the first driver ever to win in Cup, xfinity, truck, arca, Mexico series, and now Brazil series.
Put some respect to mi amigos name!!
I agree he does deserve a shout out!!
Thanks for giving Treyton Lapsevich a shoutout, he’s the Canada series’ young big talent, that is trying to make it in the States
Unfortunately , He was DQ' d today
Eric Estepp breaking news Adam Stevens will not be at the race track due to injury during vacation
Nascar just needs to make it official that the charter system is no longer. The sport was much better off without it. The starting field should always be based on the fastest and most prepared teams. It's interesting to watch past races and see established teams actually miss the show because of poor performance. It should also be accessible to new upstart teams to perform at a level to make the show.
Nascar has become a tug of war billionaires vs. multimillionaires. Remember we, the fans, buy the tickets, buy driver, team, owner and nascar merchandise, purchase sponsors merchandise or services (especially a drivers fan base), plus untold other incidentals. You want new fans? Start by giving them what they want and not herd them because you know better. Nascar needs to remember what and who brought them here. Talk rather than blame. Let me know how that works out.
It's actually more accurate to say it's billionaires against billionaires and a few multi millionaires at the back end of the pack.
@@jeremyharper3462 no it isn't. You're literally just spouting random shit

Big money, non-racing companies becoming involved to this extent may well signal the beginning of the end of NASCAR
The only negativity I hear is coming from Denny Hamlin. He's probably been the biggest hold up in all the discussions. Maybe the other team owners need to come together and tell him to keep his mouth shut. My enjoyment from NASCAR is starting to cool, not because of NASCAR, but because of the constant negativity that comes from Denny Hamlin. It gets old. I hope Netflix does do a show and leaves 2311 out. It won't hurt my feelings. And I actually like Tyler Reddick. Oh well
Ya he sucks. Doesn't even drive for his own team which is a complete farce. Imagine LeBron owned the Lakers but played for the Celtics. Lmao. Total joke.
That's a stupid take
@@FantasySportsZen Dale Sr never drove for Dale Earnhardt Inc.
Surprised Eric didn't mention Fenway Sports Group when listing off investment groups that have bought into a Nascar team. They've been around at this point the longest and are one of 3 major owner stakes within RFK.
Eric you always make good points and I enjoy your videos very much! Keep up the good work.
Wow! Great coverage. Way to bring the small tour to the top. Thank you for not just giving us two weeks of fluff.
Wow that harvick guy had a pretty good result i hope he gets to cup
what ive heard is Nascar are raking in millions in profits, yet they are only giving the teams about 5m a year, but it costs the teams 12m or more to run just one car, time Nascar started paying out a fair share to keep the sport going
Hi Eric! Did you see Danuel Suarez driving on Nascar Brazil, Interlagos track, last weekend? I think it's a good theme!
Interlagos showed interest to open 2026 Cup Series season!
Screw NASCAR. The teams need to be allowed to have charters. I hope the teams really screw NASCAR next year.
NASCAR has really gone to shit, the teams need to ditch them and SMI side with them and start a new stock car league with Gen 6 or Xfinity cars, you'd still have crown jewel events (Coke 600, Bristol night race) superspeedway racing (new Atlanta) and a good variety of tracks including Nashville, Dover, Las Vegas, New Hampshire and Sonoma.
Dale Jr has successful Xfinity cars and i also like watching The Cars Tour racing, too.
Another way to put the charter prices in perspective: The NHL's latest relocated team in Utah is already estimated to be worth $675 million.
Last I knew Steinbrenner was involved in Indy Car, so not surprised they are looking at NASCAR as well.
This is why NASCAR being owned by a family is a problem.
Ita survived 75 years
@@RippingItAllSportsCards It might not survive 75 more with the way these negotiations are going. I’ve never seen a professional sports league with this much disfunction between teams and management and you don’t think that has anything to do with NASCAR being family owned?
@@JC-zq8vkidk the nfl is fucked too. As a matter of fact most shit is and it’s a waste of time complaining 😂
@@JC-zq8vk You've hit the nail on the head. Contrast Nascar to the NFL where Goodell works for the team owners and their revenue sharing agreements work very well. For Nascar to grow, the France family needs to re-organize the structure.
Ah yes like a bunch of stockholders making the decisions is gonna be any better
What I am concerned about, as a long-time NASCAR fan, is if the "dirty laundry" spills over into the awareness of fans like myself. IF a impasse between the teams and NASCAR should happen and things are simply locked up, with no real movement. Many of us are aware how dangerous any earthquake fault becomes as soon as geologists become aware that the fault is not moving and has locked up, with a huge earthquake a real possibility. While there isn't real "danger" present if things lock up between teams and NASCAR, it could be distracting and disturbing if the threat of some sort of split with the teams starting their own series should happen. I think most fans DO NOT want to see that play out. I hope a deal is signed between NASCAR and the teams soon and my stress level can go back down! B-NASCAR FAN-Gardner
Denny ain't stupid... He knew the agreement drama was coming so he gave them everything in that last Netflix special. Now he got all the leverage in the world to hold out til a new agreement is made. Wouldn't be the least bit surprised if he had this in mind

Since NASCAR. is coming back this week. Guess what's also coming back, mother nature. Tropical Storm Debby is probably going to deliver some rain to Richmond, Virginia. Potentially affecting NASCAR's return from the olympic break.
Nope , if you pay attention to the weatherman it’s clear sun since it’s coming before the weekend.
The ARCA continues to have some of the best racing in NASCAR. Thank you Flo Racing.
So was Roush ahead of the curve bringing Fenwat in 2007?
I said this a few times already, and I'll say it again. Wanna know how to get charter deals done quickly?? Simple, GET RID OF THE DAMN CHARTER SYSTEM!!!!!
It’s not going away since the teams Wanted it .
1:46 The NASCAR version of the Fernando Alonso rookie meme 😂
If charters stay, i say add 2-4 more to get the fields more full and allow new teams in. Plus expand back to 43 cars so the few open cars still have a spot.
ERIC, Love your show.
That new guy Harvick 😂
You would need to see what the value of the Athletics actually splits into before comparing, as buying a franchise in other sports comes with staff, players, equipment, stadium leases, and sponsors already in place, while buying a charter is just a guarantee that you'll be in every race. Massive difference, and I honestly think they'll see better growth of investment without them. Being a minnow that is just trying to make the race will be possible again if HMS and JGR aren't sucking up all the revenue and purse by constantly being 8 of the 36 cars that make it to a race. We're more likely to see full fields again (save for Daytona) without the fact that 36 cars are guaranteed spots. I miss the days where the duels felt like they meant something to everyone, when anyone could end up DNQ due to a wreck...

The whole junior motorsports thing they were gonna happen. Kelly won’t let it and she shouldn’t.
When Verstappen lead a boycott of Drive to survive, it left Netflix trying to film write about the back of the pack and the fans gave them an earful. Maybe they can follow the Legacy guys and sprinkle in some Wood Bros. Spend more time covering the overtake technique going from 35th to 34th place. Or, how well coming back from 5 laps down works...
There needs to be an investment group buy out the France family. I know they started it but since Bill Jr has passed its went steadily downhill.

I really hope more teams will jump on board with the Netflix series, I really enjoyed watching the first season. Hendricks, Trackhouse, RCR, Spire.. (clearly I'm a chevy girl lol!)
How can NASCAR ban firms like Saudi Arabia fund but allow Nike and other big companies who are in bed with that fund. Nike does way worse stuff that Saudi Arabia
Amazing how one end says the sport is dying, no money. ect. Then you see them buying “charters” for 20+ million and all these new teams and groups investing. So how is the sport dying if they’re selling “numbers” for 20+ million?
I had no idea Lapcevich won! LETS GO! I hope sooner or later he gets some rides in trucks and xfinity and I hope he can perform! 🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦
I'm sympathetic to the Teams cause of getting a bigger share of the media / cable deal, but then what ... what I mean is that if they get more, they'll just spend more, then they'll be complaining about needing more again. So IDK know what they solution is ... teams could probably get better sponsor deals if the ratings and attendance returned to what it was in the late 90s and early 2000s
I don't see JRM going Cup racing. They are big fish in the Xfinity Series pond. From what I've heard on various DJD podcasts, if the Earnhardt name gets into Cup ownership, it's got to be for the long haul; they won't jeopardize the family name's ties for a 5 or 10 year stint to one day give up or sell out when they've had enough. Their legacy, and their father and grandfather's legacy means more to them.
I wonder though, since Rick Hendrick is partners with Kelley and Dale Jr. in JRM, in the purely hypothetical scenario they make the decision to go Cup racing, would the Earnhardts stand alone (or with backers) or would they be farm teams of HMS, the way 23XI is with JGR? In this incarnation of NASCAR, you need two cars/two charters unless you plan on being a $30 million dollar guaranteed starting spot back-marker field filler.
NASCAR has single handedly seen an increase in viewers since its Netflix debut, the teams have noticed this and now want a larger cut of the check. Theres some of the leverage they were looking for. i love it!
the way you used "single-handedly" doesn't make sense. Maybe you could've said "Netflix has single-handedly increased the viewers of NASCAR". There's your free English lesson.

@BornIn1500 So where's the confusion? A typo, perhaps but confusion? Nah. What he said makes perfect sense. The only thing that gets a strange look in this scenario is that unnecessary response! LOL
pretty simple. The owners, drivers, crews, shops, I T depts. sponsors, etc. NEED TO MAKE A PROFIT. The France family has probably socked away 100's of millions, while the product ( owners) lose money. France can afford to have a year long boycott. The owners can afford a year long vacation. After that, it's probably a standoff. Unless owners and drivers signed agreements to 100% be dictated, they should race other venues and actually have fun and make some money next year.
While I think Denny and 23xi were smart to grant so much access last season, I didn't enjoy watching them any more than any other team or driver and could not possibly care less if they participate or not.
In sure nascar and Netflix can find enough teams to participate to make a compelling product that many will watch. Their first mistake is focusing only on the playoffs and not making enough episodes last year.
I'd love to see a full season focus and more in depth storylines for all the teams, especially up and coming teams like spire, trackhouse, Rick Ware and the smaller teams and drivers that make up the midfield.
No matter what they make, it will get plenty of views this year, just based off the reputation of last season, and nobody cares who exactly is going to be in it the most.
I *_do not_* believe Jr would relinquish any control, outside of Kelly and other close family, simply for the fact he wouldn’t want to tarnish the Earnhardt name.
And if you believe the outside interest now isn’t banking on a permanent charter solution, you’re crazy. Short term possibly, but long term, the 20-40 million current valuation will dip back to where it was a few short years ago.
Good info.
The owners can build their own cars, which are better than the cars they have now and put on. Their own show would be a whole lot better show like it used to be.
Caitlin Clark is the only reason wnba stock has gone up... she's single handedly taken the sport somewhere it's never been
If you watch the Kenny conversation with Kelly Earnhardt unless there's a huge business model change JRM has no interest in cup series racing
the real world financial situation also comes into play. inflation, interest rates, stock market bubbles

so stupid that the charters havent been a done deal yet, so many better ideas out there that nascar and teams arent touching either.

JR might be setting his series up to compete with nascar if the drivers go on strike
That would be wild! Dale Jr would know how to run a series right.
Uhhh who cares if the teams boycott Netflix, I won't miss the show bc I've never had the need to get Netflix. I don't really watch any those series or movies Netflix has. I pay enough for my Spectrum Cable a month & FloSports yearly. And I jus got my new bill today for Spectrum, it went up over $3 a month.
The term Private Equity getting thrown around in this convo makes me queasy. Sounds like the interested parties all have sports backgrounds so maybe a different situation but given what has been going on with the likes of Donut and the aftermarket parts scene, I would hate for portions of teams to be bought up and driven to turn maximum profit. Teams should absolutely be financially stable and able to reap the rewards of the sports growth but taking cars to a track with a full team and burning up tires and fuel is not a recipe for a great return on investment. If these potential buyers are truly passionate about the sport and want to see it grown because they love racing, then by all means, show me the money. Otherwise, find another potential holding spot for your ungodly amount of cash.
Yes, but I think Dale Junior is more levelheaded than Danny Hamlin is. I think Danny Hamlin is going about this thing all the wrong way I understand that he’s fighting for what they think is theirs but how much do you think NASCAR is going to relinquish in the end, NASCAR is always gonna want a bigger piece of the pie and they don’t want to give the drivers any kind of power because the France family won’t be able to make any money off of the wholesituation it’s always comes down to one thing. It always comes down to money and power and all of that stuff. They don’t really care about the people that are in the sport. It always comes down to money.
this is true... but I have to see the teams really standing up for themselves and threatening a rift.

Does it seem like Nascar is purposely delaying the charter talks because they might be looking to sell the Nascar franchise?
So back when NASCAR created the charter system. The idea they said was to incentivize teams investing for the long haul. Now apparently they don’t like the way it’s worked out as a whole.
I’m sorry the teams have invested millions into this system. You can’t pull the rug out from under them.
You created this, find a way to work with it out.
False. The Race Team Alliance (specifically Rob Kauffman) created the charter system. The teams that got charters in 2016 paid $0 for them. Of course, Kauffman made sure he got 2 charters even though his team - Michael Waltrip Racing - was already out of business. He immediately sold them for around $20 million.
@@GrandpaShark true they paid nothing for them. They just had to have run every race for the last two or three years not sure which one off the top of my head.
But since them they have been bought and sold by some. And the teams have put a value in them.
