Excellent tutorial. I work as a Realtor and see a lot of drainage problems with houses for sale - and that often means foundation repairs. I have been working on a DIY French drain system in my own yard, thanks to your supplies and advice. Looking forward to getting my downspouts in order, too. This video will help.
They are wrapping fabric around the basin because they drilled holes at the bottom of the basin to allow any trapped water to slowly seep out over time correct? If so, why do they add the stone? Isnt the bottom of the basin making direct contact with the fabric? There isn't stone between the basin holes and fabric right? Thanks!
great product indeed! Wondering how to clean D-box? In video you showed how to clean the catch basin but did not explain how to clean D-box. Sorry If I missed it. I want to completely understand the usage of it before ordering downspout high octane kit.
I appreciate you very helpful videos. A great service to all especially us DIYs. When installing drain catch basis how deep should the hole be under the drain to catch the roof gravel? I have seen in a couple of your videos a hole is dug deeper under where you install the catch basin before you have installed the fabric. I have noticed the hole by stopping and studying what I see in the video but no explanation. Why do you use fabric and pea gravel around the drain? Does the roof gravel catch in the fabric or do you cut a hold through the fabric? I have seen most of your videos and no where do you explain how the install is done underneath to catch roof gravel when you surround it with fabric and pea gravel. I am missing something and I will be DIY a drain runoff and French drain within next 3 weeks after holidays. I am about to order from you all needed material thus I need to know since I am confused.
I have decided to just dig hole under the catch basin to catch roof gravel so it can be cleaned out. I will use fabric but cut a hold through it so gravel can fall in hole. Then I can reach hand in or use shop vacuum as you suggest. Also, I will have to install the catch basis further away from spout so any water that falls in hole will disperse away from patio and house. The catch basin may be about 20 feet away from nearest spout. Is that too far away from spout? I will be connecting two spouts to this drain. Thank you so much.
It has 3 stage technology. Stage 1: Low volume flow it's a soakaway and runs underneath the turf restrictor Plate. Stage 2: IT has a port in the plate so water comes out the lid hinge area. This essential in the North where snow can build up on the pop-up emitter lid. After running in Stage 2 it will melt the snow and be on the ready for Stage 3 rains. Stage 3: Full Blow Hard rain event the top opens up with no obstructions moves more water than any other pop-up emitter on the market including 6 inch pop-up emitters. 6 inch pop-ups only pop-up 3/4" of a inch restricting the flow. I will do a video demonstration in the near future.
Thank you for all your videos and advice. Found you a couple weeks ago and any other suggestions that come up on my TH-cam feed, I mark them as 'Not interested.' Your simplicity and approach to your installs are informative, clear, and concise. I'm looking to extend my drainage from my roof another 20-30 feet or so to the back of the yard - would it be sufficient enough to have just one pop-up emitter or should I also include an in-line catch basin? I've also seen your pop-up emitter with a catch basin built in, perhaps I could go that route instead? Thanks again for your videos!
You can take 4 downspouts to just one of our pop-ups. The more water you flow through a line the cleaner the pipe will be because of the Pounds per square inch ( PSI ). If you have a asphalt shingle roof you need a catch basin.
@@FRENCHDRAINMAN What if you fail to put in a catch basin? I have a standard 90 elbow with the slit at the bottom but it's not percolating. It's not blocked so I'm not sure what's wrong. I was thinking about adding your T elbow and creating the mini-dry well but without the catch basin. Can this be done if I clean out the shingle gravel periodically? I don't have any trees so I won't have leaves or tree debris in there. One last question. Does the T go straight to the dirt (landscape fabric) or should it go into a layer of pea gravel?
Your videos very informative and your products look fantastic. I am going to complete an underground drainage project on my property in the near future and I plan on using one of your kits. A few questions, can run a french drain into a downspout drain system? The front corner of my property floods near/on my gravel driveway. I would like to move the water to the back of my property where there is a storm drain. It is a straight shot, probably 60-70 feet and the run passes right by both of my down spouts. So I am wondering if I could start with 15 or so feet of french drain, transition into solid pipe, pick up both of my downspouts, and install a pop up near the storm drain. I know that it is a no-no to use a french drain as a downspout drain, but I really only need the french drain for a small portion of the front of my property due to a sidewalk/tree root issue. So if I feed it into a solid pipe would that be fine or do I have to do 2 independent systems? Also, do you have a brick and mortar store? I have been shopping around on your website, but I live in Southeast Michigan so I was wondering if I could just buy directly from you. Thanks for the videos! Keep them coming.

Do u need an in-line catch basine if using a Vented Cleanout with Leaf Filter Kit, running only 20ft and using and Pop-Up Emitter for Corrugated & Turf Restrictor Plate?
Is it normal on a level yard going out 40ft to have multiple risers out at the popup emitter to get plate at grade. I am installing your system right now in my yard, 1st one I have ever done and before I go out and sell this product I wanna make dam sure I can deluver. I f I can't do my own, I don't wanna go out and sell lol. Have spent countless hours watching your videos. Your product is fabulous! And I want to order all my kits from you. My yard is very level and had to go deep to get the approx 2% fall out to the pop up. After installed I tested it with the water hose. When I shut the water off it was about 30 seconds when water stopped coming out of pop up. And I still had water up at the catch basin approx 1" above the bottom pipe line. So with that much fall it had to be full of water the 30ft from inline catch basin out to pop up. The inline catch basin tench was 8" deep and out at the popup it was 18" deep and I had to use multiple risers to get up to grade. Is this normal on a level yard. The pop up plate is approx. 2" lower then Inline catch basin plate. It's a steep trench and you can see the fall no need for a level lol but I still checked it. . I was hoping to see the water push itself out of the pipe up until the water was nearly drained except for the last few feet. I did drill holes in the last 6ft of pipe and put 6" of big stone (not pea gravel) under it so it could leach out which it took about an three hours for the water to completey leach out. But it had 30ft of pipe to leach out after the water stopped coming out of the popup have the fall but where I had to use all the risers to get back up to the grade I think that's my issue., am I doing something wrong at this step because I am kind of puzzled as to why it didn't push itself out with the fall I have. There are no belly's the entire length of trench.on a level yard do you not go deep to get tbe fall or do you drop minimally so pop up isnt so deep? Please do a video on this when you can. Okay I really do need to do a video. If you are not taking all the Downspout lines to a sump pump system you can't do 2%. 99% of the time it will be less than 2%. You need to measure your grade to see whats available for a gravity drain. You have to take what's available. If your yard is flat you have to stay flat. The first priority is to direct the water away from the home. Normally the further away you are from the home the more fall (drop), you will find.
@@FRENCHDRAINMAN thank you!!!! I have two more to do that I haven't dug the trench yet. . I have absolutley no fall at all my entire yard. . I will do the next with minimal fall. I think I saved myself by drilling holes in the bottom of the pipe the last 6ft with about 6 inches of stone under the pipe out to popup where I went even deeper with stone under the popup which also has holes drill in the bottom and all stone and pup is capsulated inside the fabric. . . It did empty completely at approx 2-3 hours after I turned off the water. Let me correct that. I checked it 2-3 hours after testing and it was empty. It could have drained out faster but the pipe was definitely full all the way back to inline catch basin and just sat there after shutting water off. I was puzzled. Lol. I thought man, what did I do wrong!!?? Glad I asked!! Thanks so much for all your videos. Priceless information. My brain is like a dried up sponge taking on water (information) Lol. And I say it's level but my popup restrictor plate IS apox 2" lower then the inline catch basin. Restrictor plate. Also 2 gutters with pipes to direct water away from house My basement won't dry up on that side of house and looks awful with 4 pipes. Any advice? Thank you!!
On the web site, the downspout kit contins solid and perforated pipe, is the perforated pipe supposed to go between the inline basin and the pop-up emitter? Or why does it not all just have solid pipe? Sorry, wanting to DIY some of our downspouts and just trying to understand what we need exactly :)
I need to run pipe under a walkway of 3 feet wide pavers (which have 5" of gravel and sand under them) which are close to the house and downspout. It varies. It has to be flat minimum so it's not going up. No bellies. Run water in the trench to see what you have for bellies. I will make more videos covering time question. Thank you for commenting. I hope this helped.
Contractors are installing it at $100-$125 per ft. It's still a big savings if you DIY the project. Sorry the shipping companies want their pound of flesh. It's a small price for quality. It's a product that lasts forever.
Please explain how these recent changes are an improvement. First off a 4" cross with a 6" leg does NOT make a catch basin. When water is screaming through that pipe that is not gonna catch anything...and if did catch debris it would have to be cleaned after every rain storm. Secondly, the tee at the end is just going to allow all the shingle gravel and organic materials (leaves, pine needles, twigs, etc) into the pea gravel below the tee and clog it up so it doesn't perk and I assume the decaying debris wont smell that great either. In theory I liked the 90 w a small hole drilled into it better as then most of the debris would be flushed out of the pipe with the flow of water. I promise I'm not a troll. I really am interested bc I have projects of my own to tackle but this system goes against everything I learned in your previous vids (such as catch debris from roof in a basin/D-box so it doesn't clog the pipe & rotting organic material creates problems such as odor, worms, bugs). I look forward to your reply (before I get started on my project).
We are advancing and expanding French Drain Man online store all the time. The way we did things just a year ago is great but the problem was the big bucket basin is over kill, trouble for DIYers to install because the dig is much greater and the gaskets are difficult to work with. Also nobody unscrewed the solid cover a year later to shop vacuum them out. The new basin fits in a narrow trench and you can quickly get inside it with a shop vacuum. Convenients = home owners actually doing basin cleaning. As far as FDM V2.0 pop-up emitter it is great either way. I'm not going to argue which one is better because the elbow or tee both work with our FDM V2.0 pop-up emitter with 3 stage technology. That's why we sell it either way. We sell all of the above mentioned allowing homeowners / DIYers and contractors to make smart choices for their roof run-off system product. Thank you for commenting and enjoy your new roof run-off system which ever one you choose.
Can you explain the reasoning behind such a large drain hole at the bottom side pop-up emitter? It seems like the sump drainage on the pop-up emitter would be significantly smaller. Small enough to allow 99.9% of the rainfall coming off the roof to go out the top of the emitter. Then after the rain has stopped it, the holes are large enough to allow the line to dry out. So maybe a couple 1/4" holes since its wrapped in fabric and gravel. I understand that water can't flow that quickly out the bottom and thru the fabric and gravel...…but why even allow it too? Seems like this could create an unnecessary and extremely soggy area. I'm not as experienced as you so that is why I ask. Love your products and looking forward to doing a conversion in the future.
If you have a lot of tree seeds the large catch basin style pop-up emitter is a good option. All the water will be emitted in the area of a pop-up emitter nomatter how you set it up. We sell the traditional 90° as well and they are industry standard. I actually reduced some of the options we use to have for this very reason. Standard 90° pop-up emitter is easier to install.
Every house owner nowadays, when climate changes are showing the lack of drinking water, should have water tank for rainwater and waste it for bathrooms ( toilets), on the garden for vegetables and so on. It should be implemented as environmental law.

I love the idea, but it is a giant feat.
Too bad lowes and HD dont carry that heavy duty blue pipe.
