- This is another neat video that was easy to convert, due to the good quality of the record & filmstrip. It was interesting to see that JD had a central lube system for their grain drills. Fancy!

Amazingly, my wood box JD Van Brunt horse drawn drill has the same grain/fertilizer and grass seed delivery as these!
Same basic delivery & opener system that was used for along time amongst most manufacturers. My wood box IHC grain drill is about the same. I suppose, if the concept ain't broke, don't fix it. Lol!

@@ikonseesmrno7300 Yeah it's really not until pretty recent times that the drill meters have been upgraded. I mean, even back in the horse-drawn days, they had fluted feed meters like these and double-run meters with internal fluted cups... basically all are a controlled spill. The biggest advances have come with "drum type" meters like on Great Plains drills, that use a dimpled drum to meter seeds out, or the SI Belt meters used as retrofits on many soybean drills, which use a notched rubber belt to meter out seeds. Now they're upgrading the regular old fluted feed meters with either slanted spiral flutes, or straight flutes running against an arrowhead-shaped gate, so as the straight flutes reach the end of the gate, it encounters a tapered edge tapering inward to a point, giving a prolonged release of seed, so by the time one flute is sweeping clear of the tip of the gate and dropping the last seeds off it, the next flute behind it is just starting to release seeds, for a more steady, controlled seed delivery... same thing with the spiral fluted meters-- because they're spiraled, as the flute turns past the square gate edge, it "sweeps" from one side of the gate edge to the other, metering seeds over the edge as it goes... as it reaches the end of the gate on one flute, the next one behind it is starting to release seeds at the other end of the gate...
Look at the meters in a Deere 8300 drill or even the new 750's... they're EXACTLY the same! I ran an IH drill on a coulter caddy (got vids of it on my channel from several years ago) and its metering system was exactly the same...

Yeah we had that "central lube system" on an old John Deere 3 point hitch dry fertilizer machine... it had the same "impeller feed" system and was set up with a toolbar with knives to rip in dry fertilizer on four 40 inch cotton rows preplant. It was turned by a little tail wheel on the back with a chain to turn the impellers. The "lube system" was supposed to pump lube into the impeller bearing cups in the center and each end, and the drive wheel bearings and the jackshaft bearings and gears that linked it to the impeller shafts. It actually never really worked that good. Simpler to just run around with an oil can and do it twice a day. It was basically made to inject gear oil, not grease, so it didn't stick around. Might consider it the great-great granddaddy of the modern "automatic grease pumps" on combines and cotton pickers and big square balers and stuff today, but it wasn't "all that" IMHO... Course maybe it worked better 15 years before I was born LOL:) OL J R :)
That reminds me of the central lube system IH had for their balers. The local dealer told me they work great.... until the farmer gets crud in the grease tank or the grease hardens in the tubes after not using it for a couple years. Then the whole thing came off & went to the scrap pile.
Not much has changed over the years.
bought a B-A drill for $250 at an estate sale along with a 455 ih 4 row planter for $100 i think i stole em for that price
