Minding that rats were also slandered, surprisingly clean, and smarter than most expect, it’s not _extremely_ inaccurate.
The ‘main’ difference is that rats aren’t known for having been used by the military for support, and pigeons are much more openly comfortable and adaptable to their situations (as evidenced by their continued existence in locations they were not native to). If rats had the same _prior_ rep, it would be 1:1. However, while rats are becoming a bit better known as pets, pigeons _were_ pets, and even a sign of raised status, and then had their reputation sent to Ohio.

@@alecLogan Rats are being used to clean up mines though, so even more similar! They are too light to trigger the mine to explode, but can be trained to sniff out and mark them. so They will show where the mines are, so the handler can safely walk in a minefield and mark everything for removal
