Hey just thought I'd clear this up for you as someone who worked on the show. The Netflix version is the cut made for syndication packages. The version on other platforms and the DVD are in fact the broadcast version of the pilot as it aired on NBC in 2009. It's common practice to trim longer episodes to a syndication safe 22 minute runtime so that purchasers can maximize their ad time. This is the same reason many basic cable networks do things like turbocharged credits or, in the case of NickatNite, straight up cutting out entire scenes arbitrarily. I brought this issue to Netflix's attention when Community launched on the platform and they just replied with a shrug. More accurately they said that they just put on what the distributor gave them, in this instance it seems Sony gave them the syndication cut and Netflix is content with that.
@@RobertJW maybe bc Netflix doesn't have commercialed tiers whereas having the longer version on somewhere w commercials like Hulu means you can have an extra ad break and therefore the platform and Sony make more money

@karinalumen9722Netflix's Spanish subs are generally pretty good. But that's probably just because most American network and basic cable shows are pretranslated to Spanish in the original broadcast (Spanish and English are pretty much universally provided to CC).
I actually am so annoyed that in so many scenes where people are speaking a different language than English, Netflix removed the subtitles. The biblioteca rap, the scene with Betty White with one of the tribes, and even this one in the pilot where Jeff speaks Spanish. That change really took me by surprise because I've had this show on my laptop since 2014 and the yellow subtitles are almost iconic to me.
I think this usually this happens when a movie/show is provided to a streaming service with a version/master meant for multiple territories. Having the subtitles be generated and displayed by the video player or whatever else is preferable in these cases, so that other language translations don't have to place their subtitles in front of or above/beneath any 'burned in' english subtitles. The issue is that sometimes they forget to send over the subtitle track for translating the non-english bits when sending it over for a streaming service. So it's likely not Netflix deliberately removing them, so much as they weren't provided the proper subtitles and didn't think to check if anything was missing / ask for them to be provided. Streaming can be weiiiird like that.
Regarding Britta's change of character, in my head canon, she doesn't change. When meeting Britta she absolutely would present herself as a down-to-earth, real activist, and you'd only find out the real Britta once you get to know her.
That’s a good point. I was definitely trying to rationalize why she seemed different in the earlier episodes. I think as the seasons progress, the writers use her more as a punching bag for “Brittaisms”
@@Greyenpurple No, you're right, that's why I specify "in my head canon" cause in reality, they totally changed her. But with that head canon in place watching the earlier episodes is interesting, cause instead of her changing, you're just waiting for her façade to come off for the rest of the group.
I like the head cannon that a.) she is different later seasons because its her showing he true self around her real friends, and the first season she was more closed up, wanting to present herself better. A lot of people do that, and then show their real selves once they feel more comfortable. And b.) she's high all the time.
i also think that jeff rejecting her at the end of season 1 in front of everyone was a big blow to her self confidence. leading her to become more desperate for approval while the world gets a lot meaner to her. she also starts doing things way out of her league to try and get her confidence back if she does them successfully (which they often times don't, leading to an even greater downward spiral. also, picking up a weed addiction might not have helped)
TV shows in a 30 minute time slot on broadcast television are 22 minutes long. Networks will sometimes allow slightly longer run times for a pilot episode (as was the case when Community originally aired in September of 2009), but the rest of the episodes kept to the 22 minute runtime. However, when Community became a syndicated TV show, they had to cut the pilot down to 22 minutes to be consistent with the standard runtime for broadcast television episodes. Netflix has chosen to stream the syndicated version of the episode (the same version of the episode you would see if you were watching Community on Comedy Central) and Hulu has chosen to stream the unedited version of the episode (the same version you would have seen if you were watching it live back in September of 2009).
This is the answer. It's obvious to me having grown up watching TV pre-streaming, but I guess now younger people just don't know that that's how broadcast TV was. Special pilots would get to be slightly longer, but then would get cut down to the usual length for reruns and then syndication. Indeed, it goes beyond that; in syndication, shows were cut down even further, so the syndication version is different from the originally aired version, and also from any VHS/DVD releases. Some streaming services even have syndication versions of shows, not the originals, and that is always super annoying to see, especially when you know what bits have been cut out. From other comments here I can see that this is still the case for many shows.
Thank you, Tim!!! 🤗 I really appreciate your comment as I had forgotten that's how it works. Even though I'm in my 50s, I've been watching streaming shows long enough to forget how broadcast TV worked.
This absolutely makes sense, growing up in Canada we quite literally had a parody news show called "This Hour has 22 Minutes" based around the ad time (I think it actually still exists, but has just fallen off horribly)
This actually happens a lot to me when watching the Simpsons on streaming. I’ve seen the same episodes in syndication so many times that I’m so used to the “cut” version and now that I’ll watch them on streaming, their are little bits and extended scenes that I forgot about because I haven’t watched the “broadcast” version in so long.
@@rdoino2210 - except your experience shows the flaw in this logic. Syndication cuts happen with EVERY episode, not just the longer ones. That allows the broadcasters to show more ads than they were able to during first broadcast. So do ALL episodes of Community have missing scenes (like The Simpsons)? If not, then this may be another phenomenon. Either way, shame on Netflix for doing Community so dirty. It's a testament to the show quality that it was able to enter the mainstream via Netflix through episodes that were so mercilessly cut (one in its entirety).
Or he just shed his jock facade and became more himself (talking character wise not writing wise. Writing wise was just Donald being his goofy self, same with Gillian and Britta)
@@silveracid1344 there's definitely a longer directors cut & a network cut on the first season dvd. I can't speak to downloading anything whole it was on air. Perhaps you just downloaded the longer network version. Also I'm pretty sure that the longer version I'm remembering was longer than 25 minutes.
We need more investigating content like this, when it comes to streaming services taking the liberty to do their own editing. There are no time constraints and they aren't the creators. Physical media! Don't abandon it. I noticed similar cuts from 30 Rock. Re-watched the DVDs a lot, but over on Peacock noticed scenes and bits that just aren't shown.
Yeah, physical media for some reason adds an extra layer to the enjoyment. Maybe its the actual act of a putting DVD into a player or inserting a cartridge into a console or the fact that it's preserved in a dedicated object. It's definitely cooler to own a DVD than a file.
@@Greyenpurple its similar to why people like vinyl records, its a physical copy of the music. I feel like Troy changed quite a bit, too. Later in the show, I often forget he was a jock. He also initially seemed like he'd be more of a hot head than ended up being.
Community is the only show where Flanderization is genuinely a benefit to the characters, because Troy as a huge dork works way better than him as a jock
@@jknintendo I agree... Even in Brittas case... Everyone constantly mad they "made her stupid" but the thing most don't know if the don't watch enough is most of early seasons britta are fake. She is stupid.. For alot of the part, it's the reason they say she's the worst. It's another way of saying she's dumb. She can quip with Jeff back and forth yes, because shes that type of person. Doesn't inherently make her smart. Alot of people confuse Brittas shield or fakeness as being smart but it's not. Later seasons britta is real britta.
I'm glad to know I wasn't going crazy. When I first watched Community it was on Hulu, and I remembered inferring that Annie had unrequited feelings for Troy. But when I watched the Netflix cut, they completely glossed over that. I didn't realize Netflix had a need/want to make edits. Neat video!
Not to mention how much worse the subtitles are on netflix. Beyond them just being inconsistent with the actual dialog, on netflix they dont translate any dialog that is spoken in a different language. This means you miss out on a big moment between abed and his dad in the first season, plus some spanish after chang gets fired and a great credits scene with betty white in the first episode of season 2. As someone who watched the hulu version first it was bonkers to me the difference in subtitles, along with the show being less full due to the missing scenes
Even though it's annoying that there's multiple versions of the Pilot, and according to some of comments of other episodes as well, isn't it also the most Community thing ever? One of the major aspects of the show is how meta it is, how aware the show is that it is a show, as emphasised by Abed, having substantial differences between cuts of episodes, and therefore a changing reality depending on which version you're watching, really drives this home. Heck, you could write an episode of Community surrounding this exact premise, different characters remembering events differently, add in a red-herring conspiracy plot, maybe someone - probably Britta - hallucinating an encounter between different versions of themself, and you've got yourself a plot for the movie.
This show is one of my long time comfort shows and I had NO idea there was a different cut of the pilot. I am so glad I got the full pilot and didn't miss certain fantastic episodes, Drows not withstanding.
You better talk about the IT crowd. You are the only person I've EVER seen mention this brilliant piece of british comedy. So well written, episodes so well structured, absolutely hilarious, great characterization and interactions right off the bat. And, though it's short, there's never a weak episode. A masterclass in Sitcom writing, editing, and performance.
If I recall correctly (not sure if it was an online article or interview), but Netflix has the "syndicated" version of the show, so some episodes are cut shorter to fit a wider variety of networks when the original goal was to have shows like these re-air on random channels. I still don't understand why some of the specific cuts were made though, as mentioned in the video. It wrinkles my brain thinking about it
I think they were also the first streaming service to remove the D&D episode because of Chang's dark elf Glad I first watched it on prime a few years ago
This is definitely the reason for the difference on Netflix. The syndicated cuts of the show take out lil tiny bits from many episodes, sometimes scene ending buttons. None were as dramatic in cut length as the pilot of course.
They cut out S2E14 (Advanced dugeoons and dragons) because Chang's dark elf. It's arguably one of the best episodes of the whole series and honestly it's what I would hook friends to the series with if I really wanted to give them an idea of what's in store. If you haven't seen it yet, it's on YT in several parts, but at least it's there!
I'm sure that they played the cut version as well on the Community TH-cam channel. Although they also stated in order to upload videos they had to delete previous videos as they kept going forward in the show, so I doubt the cut version is there anymore.
the introduction scene with Brita and Jeff is different in Netflix. The Hulu version has subtitles for Jeff’s Spanish showing that it’s just random Spanish phrases.
the version on Netflix is the one that originally aired on NBC. the version on the DVD and elsewhere is the original pilot produced to sell the show to NBC. those scenes weren't cut for any big reason except to make room for selling more ads. that's just how it be on network TV.
Watched the Netflix episode yesterday and I had a strong feeling I was watching a different version. Its obscure, but theres this line where Duncan says “Well, I love chalupas” that I always remembered for its deliverance. Thought I was going crazy, but good to know the original one I watched is still intact.
i'm glad its on netflix so community can reach more people (as it should), but the original cut was gold! My personal fav was the original cut with subtitles while Jeff was misusing spanish (jeffe meaning boss) to impress Britta was hilarious! Thank you for this, we really are a 'community' after all.
you definitely put this into words that help me understand why this show that i’ve watched more times then i can remember is amazing and why i love it so much thank you! truly amazing video
I watched the first few seasons live and then restarted and finished watching the whole show on Netflix and I felt like I was going crazy when I watched the first episode on Netflix particularly when britta shook jeffs hand. I felt like the fact she brushed him off was an important part of introducing her.
The Netflix version is the actual "aired" episode whereas the longer version of the pilot is what was used to sell the show in the first place. It's obvious because the running time of the shorter version is the standard length for a commercial television network at that time. The longer version is the "director's cut" equivalent.
This is SO insane. My first watch of community was on hulu several years ago and I'm sure I watched the full version, but when community came on netflix a few years ago I started rewatching it on there instead. I have no recollection of the full pilot episode since I constantly rewatch the netflix one. I feel betrayed.
Your thumbnail is awesome. Hulu's glaring at Netflix, frowning like "What do you think you're doing" and Netflix is just vibing: "Whatever we want, dude." Captures the video's subject and hints at a story arc/conflict from the get-go. You also paired the vibrant logos with the backgrounds (green with darker green, red with darker red) and made sure that both characters were wearing bright clothing with fair lighting (pleasing color scheme + contrast, drawing the eyes). One (potentially unintended) effect of this is that the Hulu side is brighter. That pairs well with Britta's accusatory face and the core argument (I'm correct, I get all the attention). Finally, you aligned the faces and also the chalkboard + seat for that "split" effect. I haven't even seen "Community" and your thumbnail got me to click.
Thanks for this 😅 a lot of that stuff was unintentional. Hulu glaring at Netflix was intentional, and I color corrected it to make the characters look more vibrant. I totally didn’t catch the logos matching the darker background though.
One's the syndication cut, edited down for commercials for broadcast TV. This is a standard practice in television when an extended cut of something exists. There's nothing nefarious here other than the fact that that's the master Netflix was given vs. the extended one.
I’m pretty sure this is because Netflix seems to set up its contracts in a way that gets them the syndication versions of shows. The syndication version of the episode would be roughly 22 minutes long. A similar thing happened with the LOST finale, which (if I’m remembering correctly), was originally one episode that was longer than two normal episodes, but in syndication and on Netflix was cut down into two normal-length episodes.
i just recently realized as i watched the community’s youtube channel release full episodes that netflix cut so much out of other episodes too! from somebody who’s special interest was community for about a year, i knew the entire first season by heart, so the differences were intensely obvious
@@radhiadeedou8286 I agree! kind of unrelated but it meant so much to me when Troy admitted that he doesn’t fully get Abed 😭 their friendship is still so strong regardless of that. ugh I’m gonna cry lol
Tysm for this video! I’ve watched the pilot so many times on Netflix and it felt so strange to see these glimpses of additional scenes. It’s like they popped out of an alternate reality :D
Great video man. If you're interested in alternate cuts, I'd recommend Arrested Development if you've never seen it! Season 4 was was the first season broadcast straight to Netflix, but audiences found the initial version to be too confusing. So they released an alternate cut of Season 4, changing the order of events. These two versions of Season 4, while consisting of the same gags and plot developments, feel very different from one another.
Another interesting thing is that Netflix has the episodes listed in the order they were aired on tv, while the dvd and some other services have the episodes in production order, the order they were meant to be put out.
Btw I checked out your other videos BECAUSE you showed your channel at the 1:18 mark. Idk about other people but I saw something I liked without having to leave the video and that drove me to watch more. Hope this note helps!
I saw a version that had subtitles for Jeff’s “Spanish” showing exactly what he said (wrong) - that’s not available (to me, at least) using the actual subtitles provided by Netflix (I’m in Canada) - that is no longer part of the episode. Then there’s the season 2, premiere episode - in the end credits - with Professor Bower (R.I.P. Betty White) of them singing Toto’s “Africa” with what looked like the old iTunes song information appearing on screen as they were singing it. Netflix also removed the D&D episode with Fat Neil (I’m not sure if it was because it was implied that Neil was going to “unalive” himself, or if it was because of Chang going full face painted Dark Elf, and as Shirley put it, “So we’re just going to ignore this hate crime?”
WHAT!!! I had no idea. I have rewatched this show sooo many times but ONLY off of Netflix. I need to rewatch it elsewhere nowwww! I'd love more vids like this, so awesome! Thank you!!
Omg thank you dude. I've been rewatching the show on Netflix and was looking for the "either way it's for them" letter jacket scene. I thought I was losing my mind when I couldn't find it in any of the first season episodes. I agree it was a mistake cutting it, foreshadows Jeff as the leader of the group beyond the classic Winger speeches.
The wild thing is all these cut scene, I swear they were in the actual episode that aired initially on NBC. The Seinfeld line definitely was, as was Britta's introducing her activism, Annie and Troy attending the same class in high school...but then I also remember the first episode on air playing the shortened fortune teller opening. I see someone else in the comments confirmed that NBC lengthened the timeslot for first episode of Community that aired, but it baffles me why Netflix would run the syndication version, which is objectively inferior. It's pretty fascinating, and I wonder if it relates to purchasing the streaming rights (since NBC is a partial owner of Hulu, they are likely more free to put whichever version they want online).
holy shit dude!!! every time i bring this up to people they look at me like I'm crazy!! I thought I had made up the lunch lady part while watching the netflix cut, but rewatching the series on hulu just brought back all the stuff the netflix version was missing (except for the d&d episode that I'm still pissed about).
The shorter versions are the syndication cuts. Shows are often cut down for reruns in afternoon time slots on cable channels for more commercials and usually happen once a show hits 3 seasons. Netflix picked up the syndication cuts while Amazon Prime and Hulu have the DVD cuts. There might also be music licensing cuts and swaps.
Dude thank you! I've seen Community a million times so when my sister started watching it on Netflix I thought I was going crazy because normally I can pretty much quote entire episodes but scenes were missing.
I do understand cutting the content for the pilot because it reduces the barrier of entry. As good as these scenes are in the pilot, the pilot is still the weakest episode of the season. Reducing the length makes it less likely that someone drops it on the first ep (like you did before) and potentially miss out on the greatest sitcom ever made
To me the weakest episode of S1 was the Jack Black one, because his character feels so out of place and hard to watch. Plus his supposed unseen presence beforehand was a pretty egregious retcon. (Edit: and it's not like I dislike Jack Black as a performer, I think he's great when he's in his element. Community doesn't feel right for his style somehow or else that character just really annoys me as he's written.) I also think the season finale is incredibly awkward and hasn't aged well. It's weird seeing two women fall publicly head over heels for Jeff (of all people!). They have to pull some serious shenanigans at the beginning of S2 just to course correct Britta and Jeff's dynamic a little. Plus the T-slur is a running joke in that episode. 😓 So those two are my least favourite S1 episodes.
@@stapler942 At least the use of the t-slur in this context is the Dean being the *butt* of the joke? like, Britta kind of going "oh no, Dean, that's not okay".
The only full episode they removed was S2E14: Advanced Dungeons and Dragons, which I think is one of the best episodes in the show. As far as I know that and the shortened Netflix pilot are the only cuts.
After watching the video, I looked and saw 196 subscribers. My head saw 196k and it seemed right for the quality. 197 as of now. Keep up the good work!
Great video! Can't believe I never knew about any of this. And I agree about the importance of that Troy/Jeff scene. That adds *so much* to their dynamic. Having seen this, I'm going to watch their farewell in S5 in a whole new light.
For me, the Netflix version of season 1 episode 1 of Luther cuts some significant chunks of the story and important elements of some scenes, if any TH-camrs want to look into it. I always figured it got edited for "broadcast" in the US and that's the version Netflix shows US customers, so UK Netflix customers might see the original unaltered one, I dunno. The two bits that I noticed off the top of my head were different: my Netflix version omits Luther being visited by his partner in the mental hospital (?) at the beginning. Then in his interview with Alice, a conversation about dark matter is missing, so in the original he calls back to it later, whereas in the Netflix version he just kinda says it out of nowhere. I assume there's more differences, but I didn't investigate further.
I've watched Community only on Netflix. When I watched it 3 years ago, that scene with Jeff and Troy about the jacket was in there. It must have been removed recently
Is it just me, or did Netflix used to have the original cut? I've only ever watched it on Netflix, and the first time I watched the pilot, it had every scene and snippet of dialogue.
What’s so bizarre is that I watched the whole series on Netflix, and I swear I remember some of these cut scenes. Like I remember the scene at the end were Jeff and Troy talk about the jacket
I couldnt agree with you more. I like the netflix telling me that its 3 blocks from where i live, but everything they cut really needed to be there. Thank you for making this video!
I originally watched the show for the first time on Netflix a couple years ago and just yesterday I restarted it on Hulu and I was wondering why the pilot felt like a whole new experience this time! I loved watching the first time through, but yeah the unedited pilot gives so much more vital info that immerses you. so glad I got recommended this video! what perfect timing
I’ve watched community start to finish probably 10 times through now and never knew of this extended pilot episode. I own the whole series on dvd, however I guess every time I’ve watched the pilot it was through Netflix. Who knew I was missing out on some extra screen time of some beloved characters!
Holy shit. I rewatched the pilot some time ago with a friend, and couldn't put my finger on why I didn't enjoy it as much, and chalked it down to "pilots often feel different". But, it also wasn't that funny and a bit stale. This video directly answered that, huge thanks to your succinct comparisons. Great work!
There's also a version that was released online about a month before it premiered on NBC for promotional purposes. It has slightly longer cuts of many scenes and different (temporary?) music tracks.
I really like your video! I feel like there's a really cool video to make about the change in filming style - lighting, outdoor shots, where the camera sits - from the start to the end of the series. I remember hearing there was a lot of specific tactical changes over the course of the series they mentioned in the commentaries that impacted how the story was told that could be really interesting to document!
If it wasn't the original aired version, the Netflix version may originally exist for syndication. Basic cable channels love to cram as many commercials possible into the schedule so they would use the shortest version available.
Thank you. The removal of the Jeff-Troy scene at the end of the episode has always bothered me. I have watched Community from the beginning, so that scene is a favorite of mine from the broadcast days. As you point out, it is a major character moment for Jeff. It is also great dialog that, like Troy, blew my mind when heard. Like you watching with friends and seeing a scene you don't remember; I am annoyed not having a great scene when I expect it and know it exists. #sixseasonsandamovie
I’m glad you made this video. I have only watched the Netflix version for my past XX number of rewatched and thought I had a Mandela Effect about some of the scenes.
7:02 - I instantly noticed this scene was missing because I watched the entire Pilot again just to wait for Troy to say "You just wrinkled my brain, man". And after realizing that it was removed, I realized the episode was way shorter than the originally and much to my horror, every episode was also shortened. Bravo Netflix, Bravo.
I watched the longer version first and then the Netflix version years later. I didn't even realise there was a shorter version until this video appeared on my homepage.

@@CupcakeSans advanced dungeons and dragons like @Bungalow logic said. Idk about any other episodes
I think Troy changed more than Britta over the show. He went from a confident jerky jock to a nerd (mostly due to Abed's influence).
And Abed got more immature and much more social. I really love how they changed each other as time went on
Or he just shed his jock facade and became more himself (talking character wise not writing wise. Writing wise was just Donald being his goofy self, same with Gillian and Britta)
The shorter version is most likely the network version that aired on NBC, while the longer DVD version showed up on the DVD as an extended version.
I downloaded the show while it was running (on NBC), none of these scenes were cut.
The cut version was the reaired version they repeated later in the season. When Community on TH-cam aired the Pilot, they used the 21 minute version.
If they extended the pilot for the DVD then why wouldn’t they add deleted scenes to any other episodes?
My guess is that it's just cheaper. And I have no official answer, even though I've asked official people why there is a difference.
@@Greyenpurple subbed. I try to support up n coming creators. Especially when their content is Community! Streets ahead, bro
@@Greyenpurple its similar to why people like vinyl records, its a physical copy of the music. It's cool, in a way you're holding the music or the movie/show in your hands, and if that show/movie or album mean a lot to you, to hold them feels great. It's literally the same thing as just clicking a mouse or pressing on your phone but it feels like more, its interesting
I have an Apple digital copy that I downloaded immediately after buying it. They removed some episodes after the fact and I *think* they’re still up but just in case, I own them. I want physical copies but they were so much more expensive than the digital ones on a big sale.
Tv has butchered scrubs. Then streaming gutted it by taking out all licensed music.
Whelp this explains why I always miss Jeff talking to Troy about his jacket that I remember VIVIDLY
I remember that when this show first aired in the Netherlands they started with the paintball episode. I was so confused, yet so amused. going from that episode to the pilot was like getting whiplash.
Omg I wonder why they did that

This video feels like a fever dream, I have seen community first when it came out, then on netflix and then recently on hulu, and now after watching this I feel like I have no grasp on what community is anymore lol. Really appreciated this! Honestly wish more content was as straight and to the point like this one, we don't always need the 4 hour retrospective of the entire show. Great job, keep it up!
Don’t watch 4 hour retrospectives then
@@sealard2279 I really enjoy that long form content! I actually edit that kind of content both personally and professionally. Was just trying to say that not everything has to be that way!
@@NeedlessNick I’ve been seeing a lot of comments where people praise a creator by putting other creators down and I seem to have misinterpreted your comment as one of those. My apologies
not too long ago, the Community YT channel decided to post episodes. I watched up until S1 E4 when i noticed that the first scene was entirely different than the scene on Netflix. I thought I was going crazy but i watched it side by side and sure enough i was right. i had feeling that it wasnt the only episode to do that and i'm glad there's now a video confirming the fact that i'm indeed not going insane
I feel like Troy changed quite a bit, too. Later in the show, I often forget he was a jock. He also initially seemed like he'd be more of a hot head than ended up being.
It's called growing
yeah I think that was just character development tbh
i mean he was like 19 in season one
The part where Jeff calls himself Jeffe is a great bit that just gets lost in translation to anyone that doesn't know spanish.
@lis Abed's Dad: "I never said you were the reason she left"
Abed: "You never had to."
I showed this show to some friends the other day via Netflix. I had the original cuts and felt like I was going crazy. Thanks for this video!
This show is one of my long time comfort shows and I had NO idea there was a different cut of the pilot. I am so glad I got the full pilot and didn't miss certain fantastic episodes, Drows not withstanding.
Chang's drow scene(dark elf) was one of the best in the show. Netflix just fully removed the episode from season 2
The advice Jeff gives Troy in the "you wrinkled my brain" scene literally changed my life
Whoever removed the DnD episode has to be publicly shamed
Chang is in blackface for most of the episode
Yeh that's his character, not realising it's racist@@yoshigolf7
It’s on peacock
It isn't even blackface, just similar.
Snowflakes.
The “three blocks from your home” is straight from the community pilot screenplay written by Dan Harmon
It wrinkles my brain thinking about it
THAT wrinkles my brain
I think they were also the first streaming service to remove the D&D episode because of Chang's dark elf
Glad I first watched it on prime a few years ago
This is definitely the reason for the difference on Netflix. The syndicated cuts of the show take out lil tiny bits from many episodes, sometimes scene ending buttons. None were as dramatic in cut length as the pilot of course.
They cut out S2E14 (Advanced dugeoons and dragons) because Chang's dark elf. It's arguably one of the best episodes of the whole series and honestly it's what I would hook friends to the series with if I really wanted to give them an idea of what's in store. If you haven't seen it yet, it's on YT in several parts, but at least it's there!
You can also buy the episode on TH-cam
I'm sure that they played the cut version as well on the Community TH-cam channel. Although they also stated in order to upload videos they had to delete previous videos as they kept going forward in the show, so I doubt the cut version is there anymore.
As someone who first watched the Netflix cut I feel cheated out and will now be rewatching the entire series again
every copy of community is personalized
the introduction scene with Brita and Jeff is different in Netflix. The Hulu version has subtitles for Jeff’s Spanish showing that it’s just random Spanish phrases.
Community videos always make me feel good man thanks
There's actually a third cut. On a DVD box set I have, the full version is used, except it uses the origami title
the version on Netflix is the one that originally aired on NBC. the version on the DVD and elsewhere is the original pilot produced to sell the show to NBC. those scenes weren't cut for any big reason except to make room for selling more ads. that's just how it be on network TV.
I am as big of a community fan as they come and I am just finding this out. Super awesome video!
Major Community fan here, and I watched it on Netflix, so I had no idea about these changes!! Thank you for making this video!
Watched the Netflix episode yesterday and I had a strong feeling I was watching a different version. Its obscure, but theres this line where Duncan says “Well, I love chalupas” that I always remembered for its deliverance.
Thought I was going crazy, but good to know the original one I watched is still intact.
Congrats on this video blowing up. I think you shocked a lot of Community fans by letting us know about Netflix's version of the pilot. Thanks!
i'm glad its on netflix so community can reach more people (as it should), but the original cut was gold!
Please do EVERY Community episode. I love learning more about the show, and you're enjoyable to listen to.
Netflix really Britta'd it
The Duncan disrespect! 2:17 First time I watched Community, and realized John Oliver wasn't a bigger recurring character, I was devastated

A similar thing happened with the LOST finale, which (if I’m remembering correctly), was originally one episode that was longer than two normal episodes, but in syndication and on Netflix was cut down into two normal-length episodes.
yes it seems that way!! it's like how, when they used to have doctor who, they only had the american/syndication cut, even in the uk!
i just recently realized as i watched the community’s youtube channel release full episodes that netflix cut so much out of other episodes too! from somebody who’s special interest was community for about a year, i knew the entire first season by heart, so the differences were intensely obvious
I love what you said about Jeff/Abed, because Jeff is. such. a. nerd.
Some people mentioned that Jeff gets Abed more than Troy does
@@radhiadeedou8286 I agree! kind of unrelated but it meant so much to me when Troy admitted that he doesn’t fully get Abed 😭 their friendship is still so strong regardless of that. ugh I’m gonna cry lol
I was so excited for the re-edit. But after watching it, I prefer the original edit of season 4
Another interesting thing is that Netflix has the episodes listed in the order they were aired on tv, while the dvd and some other services have the episodes in production order, the order they were meant to be put out.
@@_CallMeRex Just goes to show, we have to go back to buying physical media
I believe it's because of the dark elf black face, there were articles about it during the 2020 blm protests if I remember correctly
WHAT!!! I had no idea. I have rewatched this show sooo many times but ONLY off of Netflix. I need to rewatch it elsewhere nowwww! I'd love more vids like this, so awesome! Thank you!!
you channel is criminally underrated, great video man
Thanks, I appreciate it!
This video rocked, and the Rango reference was just epic imo. I'm gonna have to check more of your content out!
Thanks for this. I had no idea why I like Britta so much. Now I realize... it's because she looks like Elisabeth Shue.
I've watched both versions far more times than I can count. Glad someone created a video on the differences that has been bugging me for years.
holy shit dude!!! every time i bring this up to people they look at me like I'm crazy!!
Reducing the length makes it less likely that someone drops it on the first ep (like you did before) and potentially miss out on the greatest sitcom ever made
Yeah, that makes sense. They wanted to FastTrack people's viewing to the content that Community's really known for.
Community doesn't feel right for his style somehow or else that character just really annoys me as he's written.)
I also think the season finale is incredibly awkward and hasn't aged well. It's weird seeing two women fall publicly head over heels for Jeff (of all people!). They have to pull some serious shenanigans at the beginning of S2 just to course correct Britta and Jeff's dynamic a little. Plus the T-slur is a running joke in that episode. 😓
So those two are my least favourite S1 episodes.
@@stapler942 At least the use of the t-slur in this context is the Dean being the *butt* of the joke? like, Britta kind of going "oh no, Dean, that's not okay".
The "extended" version is the one I remember watching on Netflix in Sweden
did they cut any other episodes ?
Can't believe this is a new channel. Great video. I watched this and I haven't even watched the series.
Lmao your last line about Community and IT Crowd, is the only thing I watch anymore! Literally😅!!! I felt that in my soul bro! Thanks for this video😊
Great work!
this is the exact type of weirdly hyper obscure topic that i love to see in my youtube recommended feed
I took alot out of this video, but mostly that I am indeed a film geek. And love inspections of my favorite shows, great video 😁
Iirc, the dvd version (hulu) was on netflix when they first had the show on the platform. At least, in canada
One is probably the extended home video cut, the other is probably the one that was re-edited to air on tv.
no idea bout your other content but that information deserves a follow and a like, only seen the netflix version till now
That Troy Jeff scene at the end is foundational. I could see the movie opening with that flashback and building from there.
I didn’t even know this was a thing, thanks random stranger! Liked the video!
Subscribed. I love anyone that loves community
I love that you decided to make what you thought would be a niche video, and it turned out to be a hit. Congrats dude!
And Stan but that’s an Australian service
I watched the longer version first and then the Netflix version years later. I didn't even realise there was a shorter version until this video appeared on my homepage.
The cuts were probably made for reruns. 22 minutes is the usual length of 30 minute shows without commercials.
