A mysterious wormhole appears over Earth, and scientists detect strange transmissions that suggest the existence of extraterrestrial life. The Terran Republic is formed after nations around the world agree to a peace treaty. Explorer Thomas Connery discovers a segment of the Kuiper belt and is elected president of the Terran Republic. Business leaders form the New Conglomerate, a libertarian organization that wants to take advantage of the discovery.
Travelers from Earth discover and settle Auraxis. The initial years on Auraxis are peaceful, but ideological differences between the settlers lead to armed conflict. The Vanu Sovereignty declares independence and goes to war with the other empires.
