How to tell the time in Spanish - Cómo decir la hora en español.

In this video, we'll talk about the time and how can we ask about events and activities you have.
Usually in Spanish you say "de la tarde" from noon to six pm
"de la noche" would be from six pm to midnight.
There are two ways to tell the time:
1:27 "the simple way"
3:03 "the other way"

How do you prefer to tell the time in Spanish? I find that it is more common in Latin America to say the first way. In Spain it is more common to hear the second way. || ¿Cómo prefieres decir la hora en español? Yo veo que en Latinoamérica es más común decir la primera manera. En España es más común escuchar la segunda manera.
I find the first way to be best for me since I'm still learning the numbers and need to practice-lol
But I like the second way too, which I didn't know about until I saw this video. So thank you for explaining it so well :-)
¡Hola María! Me encantan tus videos y los comparto cada vez que puedo :). Definitivamente diría que en América Latina o por lo menos en Colombia la primera opción es más común. La segunda opción creo nunca la he escuchado (o por lo menos muy poco), pero la expresión " *falta(n) x para las x* " sí es bastante común.
Ejemplo:
2:40 ("son las dos y cuarenta" o " *faltan veinte para las tres* ").
2:45 ("son las dos y cuarenta y cinco" o " *falta un cuarto para las tres* ").
2:50 ("son las dos y cincuenta" o " *falta diez para las tres* " ).
2:55 ("son las dos y cincuenta y cinco" o " *faltan cinco para las tres* ").
En resumen, "son las 2 menos 10", o "son las 2 menos cuarto" quizás sea común en España o en algunos países de Latinoamérica, pero en Colombia poco común. Digamos que sólo es una pequeña aclaración para quienes quieran venir a Colombia. De resto, me gustó mucho el video y este canal me fascina. Tú y Cody hacen un excelente equipo y #WhyNotSpanish en mi opinión es uno de los mejores canales para enseñar y aprender español. A lo colombiano: ¡qué chévere y qué bacano este canal ❤!

Greetings from Melbourne Australia. Just want to thank you both Maria and Cody here for your awesome teaching this wonderful language. I love Spanish I fell in love with the language years ago watching a few TV shows that were spoken in Spanish I loved and still do love the sound of Spanish but sadly never got around to really learning the language. Watching those TV shows I did learn a few words however. For me right now I have so much to learn... If only you tube and your videos you have here right now existed back in the day I would of been all over them like a rash haha! I hear the following format used much more regularly... is it correct, or a bad slang?
1.40pm = son veinte para las dos
4.45pm = Es cuarto para las cinco
+alex98uk You're right. It's not a bad slang and it's commonly used in Latin America. I would just say: "faltan veinte para las dos" and "falta un cuarto para las cinco".
Nevertheless, it is more common to hear: "es la una y cuarenta" and "son las cuatro y cuarenta y cinco".
In Spain, the most common way to hear it is with the "son las ___ menos __" format.

Hola, María. Yo sé que en USA enseñan a decir la hora en Español diciendo "son las 5 menos 10", pero en la vida real, al menos en Colombia, ya no usamos esa forma y la verdad es un concepto muy difícil de captar por los estudiantes de Español. Sin embargo, la expresión que usamos más comunmente es "faltan 10 para las 5" y esa no la enseñan aquí. Me puedes decir cuál sería la mejor forma de traducir al Inglés esta última expresión, por favor?

son las dos y venticinco, son las tres menos venticinco
Like English, Spanish is also Latin. So you can still say am/pm. However, it's more common to use "de la tarde, de la noche", etc.

At 2:30 I said " es la una y media" which is how my Spanish teacher in high school taught us.
I am enjoying these lessons but could you have a few more seconds of dead air while we think about the answer. Also when Maria repeats Cody's answer (in perfect Spanish of course), I like to say it too and emulate her but there is never enough time to even hit the pause button so just an extra 2 seconds there too. This should only increase the videos by a minute overall. Thank you
