Quick story. Steinfort started as a Raider in 1976 and actually won a game with a last second kick in his first game with the Raiders vs the defending world champion Steelers. My dad was a Raiders season ticket holder and I taped the end of that game from the radio at home for him so he could listen to the radio call of Steinfort’s game winning kick. Steinfort kicked pretty well until he hurt his hip and missed 2 extra points in a game vs Green Bay later that year and didn’t play the rest of the season. I went to 3 games with my dad in that 76 season, Denver, San Diego and the first round playoff game vs New England which is still my favorite sporting event I’ve ever attended.
The 76 Raiders are my favorite team of all time I'm too young to have seen them but I watch as many games as I can find from that year. And what a year it was only 1 loss and straight up domination of the Vikings in the Super Bowl
I saw the box score for the Raiders Packers game in 1976, all extra points were misses and wondered why Steinfort had missed 2 and Ray Guy had to try one.
Leading up to their game against the Raiders in 1976, Chester Marcol hurt himself while kicking left footed in practice, trying (who knows why) to mimic Steinfort who was left footed. In case Marcol couldn't go the next week against Detroit, the Packers signed Errol Mann who the Lions had cut the week before. The week after that, the Packers released Mann, and the Raiders signed him to replace the afore-mentioned Steinfort who was cut by the Raiders after playing hurt for quite a while. Steinfort replaced George Blanda in Oakland, and Blanda wanted to keep playing, but there was some rule that prevented the Raiders from bringing him back. Mann kicked for Oakland until 1978.
Cool fact: Plunkett started his career with the Patriots and played a year with the 49ers. Btw... why is Namath in the HOF and Plunkett isn’t? Plunkett helped Oakland win 2 Superbowls.
Namath was a big personality. He got in solely on fame and the one upset Super Bowl over the colts. I honestly don’t think either belong in the hall. Eli has two super bowl wins like Plunkett and a much better career but is gonna be a borderline guy when eligible.
@@MrRyan-wu4jx that’s a fair assessment. I wonder Trent Dilfer has a SB ring would that put him in with the same place as Namath? The defense helped Dilfer in the SB. As far as Namath I think the running game helped him. Some say Boozer and Snell made the difference...I don’t know
I love Jim, but he was never a top QB. In both of his only respectable seasons, he wasn't even the starting QB to start the season. His W-L record is also not pretty
3. The other two were in the Kingdome. According to PFR, it lists the botched PAT as an incomplete pass, so likely he didn’t even get a chance due to a botched snap or hold.
Back in those days, coaches were more patient with kickers. Maybe too much so. I am a Viking fan. Fred Cox kicked for the Vikings probably five years too long. At the end of his career, he could not even kick off to reach the ten yard line. So he squib kicked. Ridiculous. He was great when it did not matter. He missed too much under pressure. Back in those days, coaches stuck with their guys.
It was treated less like a business back then. Veterans who had a reputation as hard workers and solid character guys could stick on a roster for a good 10-15 years, often years beyond the point where a new younger player probably would've performed better. If you look at team rosters over the years, before the 90's rosters tended to be older, and the NFL draft was much less hyped since rookies didn't get as much playing time as they do now.
@@ryanjacobson2508 Right. I'm 60 years old, so I remember when free agency first hit baseball hard in the 70s. The Twins became a AAA farm team for the Yankees and the Angels. That didn't hit the NFL as hard, but it did have an effect. You saw more guys wanting out if the pay wasn't there. I can't say I blamed them. Rosters changed a lot more.
This guy had some bad misses, but at the same time, Denver's offense had three red zone trips. How can you go conservative in those moments???? Bury them by scoring touchdowns!!!
The Broncos' offense was notoriously anaemic in the late 70's, early 80's....it's a wonder they made the Super Bowl in 77 and the play-off's in 78 & 79. Their success was mainly due to a very good defence.
@Official JaguarGator9 All due respect, I always thought the worst kicking performance was Neil O'Donoghue of the Cardinals. Monday Night Football against the Giants on 10/24/83; in overtime he missed 3 field goal attempts (42, 20 and 45 yards respectively) and the game ended tied 20-20.
There must have been a mishandled snap on the extra point in this game resulting in a failed pass attempt for an extra point. Maybe the problem was with the snapper and/or holder as well in addition to the kicker.
The real takeaway is how that 1981 Raiders offense was so inept, it kept looking this gift horse in the mouth and trying to pull teeth out. Denver was DYING to give this one away, and Oakland just refused to take it.
@@rocknroll7065 The AFC was a much weaker conference than the NFC from the mid-1980's thru mid-1990's. The Raiders, Steelers, and Dolphins, who dominated the 70's, slid into mediocrity or worse as the 80's went on. I guess Reeves deserves credit for rising above the mediocrity, but there's a reason Denver kept getting blown out in the Superbowl.
Now do Tom Brady throwing 4 interceptions in one quarter against Denver. That HAS to be the worst 15 minute performance for any player in league history. He would have had a better 4th quarter rating if he spiked the ball into the ground on every single play.
Cole Ford of the Raiders 9/21/97 against the Jets. Missed an XP and 4 FGs - one being blocked and returned for what would be the game winning TD. His last miss could have won the game....
Great channel and cool info! If you haven't done one yet you should look into those 1981 Raiders. Two games later they would start a three game streak where they were shutout in each game. That hadn't happened since the early 40's with the Brooklyn Dodgers.

Technically, Steinfort hit the game-winning field goal, a 29-yarder in the second quarter to give the Broncos a 9-7 lead. Hero.
@NO PATS JIM That's right! The Raiders didn't look anything like the team that won the Super Bowl the year before.
Yeah exactly. Unless he cost them the win it's all forgiven. He must have made three field goals. Three.
@Hush Son That’s one of the funnier comments I’ve ever read. Well done sir.
@@lathumpipe All that matters is who won. Obviously Denver won. Anything else is inconsequential.
@Leroy Brown Since when?
I remember watching this game as a kid. My uncle used to call him Fred Stonefoot....sounds like a character from The Flintstones.
Kee at it with these videos friend. With the quality you put out, it’s just a matter of time before your channel explodes.
Zane Gonzalez, Browns at Saints 2018, 2 missed FGs and 2 missed XPs in the 4th quarter
zane is literally the reason we beat the browns that game lmao
And of course my Cardinals sign Gonzalez.
I believe he attempted a 73 yard fg on MNF......and missed it by about 40 yards lol
Glad I found this channel. Seeing some of the craziest moments from before I was born to some I saw live. Great job man.

Watching a left footed kicker just looks so weird.
Aside, from Adam Vinitieri nobody respects kickers.. Lmafo!!!
I remember the 57 yarder in 1980 was a lazer vs the Redskins on MNF game in Denver.
1. How many of Steinfort’s 50+ yard field goals in 1980 were in Denver?
2. How did the Broncos fail on the point after in that Raiders game?
BTB, these are not rhetorical questions.
3. The other two were in the Kingdome. According to PFR, it lists the botched PAT as an incomplete pass, so likely he didn’t even get a chance due to a botched snap or hold.
4 missed FG’s at Mile High!
Wow great videos keep up good work
Which is worse, this game as a kicker or the worst long snapper game in nfl history?
What I find disturbing is that 3 of those were short FGs. I can understand the 51-yard miss, but not the others.
Ah, Fred Stonefoot.
Kris Brown, Steelers vs Ravens 2001, Brown missed 5 FG
I think Neil O'Donahue missing 3 FG's in overtime in 1983 is much worse.
Did Jim Kiick ever kick?
We used to call him Fred Stonefoot
LIN Elliott proud of his kicks
Ain't gonna lie I like the old Bronco uniforms
Why would they switch to Chicago's colors in 1996? They used to have a unique shade of blue, not quite royal blue, not quite charger's blue.
Actually, Red Miller was the head coach of the Broncos, in 1981. Dan Reeves became head coach of the Broncos in 1983.
Actually 1980 was Miller's last season. Reeves was hired for the 1981 season.

When counting his misses, you should've used Lebron at the pep rally.

The turd in the punchbowl

Which is why Dan Reeves never won a championship as a head coach , played not to lose instead of playing to win.
I mean it was only a 9-7 game and normally you don’t expect a kicker to miss from inside 35 once let alone 4 times.

That's why they drafted Rich Karlis
Jim Turner was also the very last straight ahead kicker in the NFL.

Not Reeves fault. Place kicker and special teams coach
A choke is when you have equal or better talent and don't come through. Reeves teams overachieved considering their average talent
