@@l.o.r410 I've kinda had that with neons too, they don't always school and need good conditions usually. The thing with neon tetras (and most other schooling fish) is that they need some sort of trigger to make them school. For example, a large denison barb is just the right size to not eat them but to "scare" them into schooling. This is because schooling is kind of a defense mechanism (if I were to oversimplify it). Can you imagine if this guy didn’t have the fish hobby outlet haha so intensely educational you can tell he loves and breathes this I appreciate the passion👍🏼
Hello Dustin. I have just started my first planted tank and it will be ready in a couple months. So just asking, are shrimps safe to keep with kuhli loaches? As both are bottom dwellers?
I have a 90 full of Denesonii (roseline sharks) that are great schooling fish. they're all over 4 inches now and it looks awesome with them cruising through all of your plants.
I find other people absolutely love the way neon tetras look and are super impressed by them. Any time I have people over the first fish they comment on is my absolutely massive angelfish, Big Bertha, and then they immediately start asking questions about the neon tetras and the blue stripe on them
I've had neon tetras and they mostly preferred to hang around nearer to the mid bottom of the tank. I've got harlequin rasboras now and they're bold as brass and absolutely zoom around everywhere together. Really a much tighter school and really active compared to the neons.
I’ve got a group of boesemani and turquoise rainbow fish who provide big color and action in my 46 gallon tank. Cherry barbs are a nice contrast and aren’t intimidated by all the splashing and high speed activity. Rounding out my tank are a recently added school of rummy nose tetras. These might be my new favorites. What didn’t work was a school of neons. Gradually picked off and just too slow to deal with the boisterous rainbows. Also lost every one of my 6 dwarf panda Cory cats. I think the neons and Cory’s would have been fine with Praecox and threadfin rainbows.
I kept 10 Odessa Barbs in my community with lots of small fish and cories. They were so much fun to watch they would chase wash other around the plants and driftwood and do this for a long time. Loved playing in the current if I added a power head and never bothered any other fish. Very under rated barb, the black and stands out in planted tank with any coloured substrate
I like torpedo barbs....add a few albino and xantic..lovely Nv stop moving...and best part...when feeding time....no food hit the bottom...keeping 12 with red arowana and 8 angels
Have a small school of 7 panda cories (with male guppies and nerite snails) in a 29 gallon. Planning to add a sunset honey gourami soon. In a 20 gallon, have 10 neon green rasboras - microdevario kubotai. Looking to add another 10 when back in stock at my LFS, and still figuring out the rest of the stocking for that tank.
BRO!!! GOTTA GO WITH THE DENISON BARB/ROSELINE SHARK !! They say they are rare but for some reason I keep coming across them in Vegas. Watching them eat with a quickness and swim in and out of YOUR Crypts is amazing. Thanks "Dusty"
I had 6 Tiger Barbs in my 100 gallon community tank. One of those dudes got stuck where he used to sleep so he met his maker soon enough. I got 5 barbs left and they're moderately active and nip at my kois so Imma add five more to ease the tension
Maybe a tip about tiger Barbs I read and experienced myself(no guarantees) It seems to help when they are added as last in the tank regarding their territorial behavior. Larger groups like 10+ and they school up with clownbotias. Do not keep them with longfin fish like angels. I right now have them with corydoras, congo tetras, rainbows and clownbotia and it all goes very well in a 240L tank. Great video Dustin!
I love rainbowfish because every morning they flair up and display their amazing colors for me, and I love how food aggressive mine are, but yet they're very good for community tanks.
Yo dusty I'm rolling with about 40 green neons, 20 red phantoms, and 9 rummynose in my 75 Blackwater. The phantoms hold down the bottom to mid level, green neons up top and the rummies all over. It looks spectacular 🤙👍
Hey Dustin, got a 2nd hand 450 litre and I'm putting 3 out of your 5 picks in it. 10 Boesemani rainbowfish, 40 Cherry Barbs and 14 Panda Corydoras. Please let me know if that's a good mix or if you would change a bit. Thanks.
I have rummy nose tetras and cardinals. They are my two favorites. Black neons I like also. They are hardier than regular neons. Green tiger barbs are doing well in one of my tanks. I also got a barb I never saw before rhombo barbs. They were pricey for barbs so I only got five but they are very nice.
I'm gonna go old school and say my all time favorite... neon tetras 🤷♂️. My 60 gallon DIRTED planted tank (pictured to the left) filled with 60 neon tetras! Along with around 200 cherry shrimp. Best tank I've ever had. Never scared to come up during feeding. And schooling in that heavily planted tank... the natural behaviors were awesome to watch!
I just ordered dirt from you to get my tank started! I’m planning on doing a tiger barb planted species tank, and when I can upgrade to a 100g I’ll get some clown loaches. great video.
Yoyo loaches are crazy sneaky schoolers they get up to serious activity’s and each has a different personality and get along with pretty much any fish big or small
Barbs are great. My tigers used to fight so much though. They started killing one another off. Rosy red barbs have to be my favorite. Though my all time favorite hands down is the rummynose tetras! Gotta love that red face and checkered tail fin! The thing is people say they are sensitive and tough fish to keep. Though I've never had a problem with them. They have to be the longest fish I've kept. Haven't had much luck with the rainbow fish.
I have a small school of Zebra Danios (7), I built up over time as my starter fish on the new tank. They are great. That being said, I really love the Red Flame Tetras. Want to build up a tank with them. Watch them whenever I am in the LFS. They are my favorite.
Hi , I have done two attempts to breed rainbows , the fry about 50 survivors per attempt I ve put in a nice heavy planted tank to grow out. After 3 months or so they become a true school, beautiful and in time 6/7 months of age they show some color and pretty much fill the tank. Easiest attempt was the preacox and therefore a real recommendation. Second species was the boesemani aiinjo, pfffff they ask for your patience to grow up. Stunning is to see a fish you love grow and color up . And man do they school beautifully. After a small year they all found other homes. This is also the time I learned to master the siphon, I guess you know how small and fragile rainbow fry are. You have siphon the tank and not touch or suck in the fry, I got the degree Precision Siphonner ( no running/ short hose and you have to stand on one leg with one eye closed) Siphon On
That coffee is hard 😊and thank you for the info. I have a clown loche( or how is called) and he is mean sometimes as I had to move my corys in another tank . And now he is bullying some other smaller fish . The guy that gave me the tank put too many fish in a 30 galon
I know what I want. Once my family and I move to Knoxville Tennessee I'm going to build a plywood fish tank so I can get a freshwater puffer in a planted tank.
I’m a BIG fan of the lemon tetra! If kept well they will be a beautiful yellow color and they are a medium sized tetra so they can hold their own. A school of the, and serpaes is such a cool look!!
I have a 29 with 12 zebra danios and 1 angel fish but I'm getting a 90 gallon I want to know what schooling fish would go in it but bigger size fidh that schools
I love my tetras. Right now I have Black Skirts, Black Neons, Serpaes and Beacon Tetras, while in the past I've also kept Neons and Glowlight Tetras (not Glofish). I also have six Giant Danios, which are active and super-hardy without the constant frantic chasing and fighting of Zebra Danios.
Imo you can mix corys tho because they look similar enough that they will all school because they just see "oh look another cory lets be friends" but some people say otherwise.
I’m currently rolling with schools of neon tetras, cherry barbs, rummy nose tetras, and green Cory cats in a couple of tanks. Love ‘em! About to add a group of celestial pearl danios to my newish 40 breeder planted up with your plants! Glad to see you mixing in some fish species videos again!
Dustin's Fish Tanks I hear they are pretty shy but hoping other schooling fish will make them feel safer. Going to try them in with the rummy nose and corys. (And a few clown killis too)
I’ve always been in love with the cory cats. Just like Dustin said, do it up!! These fish love to be with each other and they are ADORABLE. Also, I purchased a bunch of Harlequin Rasboras today and they are starting to school beautifully. They’re peaceful and relatively small. They favor the middle to top area of a tank adding lots of movement. Get no less that 6 of them. However, I went ahead and bought all they had! I have 21 Rasboras!
I need some advice from the jungle val guy and his loyal followers! Everytime I trim my val, the leaves rot and melt all the way back. I've watched videos but everyone just trims their plants and I guess everything is fine for them? Idk what I'm doing wrong. I like the plant around 3-4feet so it drapes across the top of my tank. I usually trim a good foot or two off. Tank is low tech with a small amount of fertilizer capped with sand. I used to dose but u started to get Blackbeard algae so I've since stopped. Lighting is at 5k lumens and the sun hits the tank for part of the day
Truth!! ✊🏻 I put a school of white clouds with a school of red rasbora and the clouds bullied the rasbora into a corner of the 20 long. 😔 No way for the rasbora to live! Bad mistake.
