Omg people misunderstanding what “limited edition” means drives me crazy. Especially when something is limited to a larger run of like 10,000 copies, people will go “THATS NOT LIMITED THATS SO MANY COPIES!!!!” …but it literally is limited. To ten thousand copies. They may do another limited run of 50,000 copies in the future. That’s still limited. The term “limited edition” doesn’t mean “scarce” or “hard to get.” It simply means that it’s a specific edition with some specific feature, for a limited number of copies. The number doesn’t matter.
The Black Sabbath album was recorded at the same studio where the Rolling Stones recorded their debut LP. Thanks for the comprehensive review, Mazzy. I don’t own this album, so I’m looking forward to receiving my copy from Rhino.
I ordered the Devo last week. I really like the Rhino High Fidelity pressings for the Cars and Television, so I'm sure this will be a rewarding listening experience too. When it will actually ship is anyone's guess, because Rhino store site is utterly useless in that regard. Just says "In progress" in perpetuity, no shipping or tracking info, and one day your order magically shows up in the mail.
Hi Mazzy, nice job as always. Interesting pressing from the dreaded digital file method in a 2016 mastering by Sean Magee and Andy Pearce . What brings me to look at a digital sourced LP is that it is sourced from an ANALOG MASTER from the EUROPEAN original archive. It’s cheap, available and sounds like it’s cut from a different tape and it sounds very good. Not the biggest fan of shoot outs so can’t tell you how it would fair but would be interesting for some to compare. I think most of these audio differences are attributed to VTA cutterhead differences. With proper compensation most good masterings can be maximized for near reference results. We had a discussion on Rachel’s show about this VTA issue with you, in groove Mike and Patrick back in January. Thanks again , Tony
Kevin Gray is the busiest remastering engineer in the world right now. I don’t know how he does it. Between all the Blue Note reissues, the new Original Jazz Classics reissue series, now these albums, he never gets a day off

Well, the opening measures of the title cut is at least nice and slow. For an early morning session, the tempo is okay until the volume and Ozzy’s mania takes the stage.
Hiya, Mazzy! Got my promos of the DEVO hi-fi release, did my unboxing video, and I'm reporting that both my Obi strips do indeed say "5,000" on them. You got a cool collectible with yours! Now I'm on the hunt for one like you have!!

I'm gonna try headphones on these next. Love the input Mazzy, living the life. Expresso and Sabbath at 2 AM ? The life !!!!!
Yessss! I own an OG UK Vertigo and a US WLP. The US Artisan is VERY close to the UK. Both sound like a million bucks. I wish Wicked World was on the UK issue so I didn’t ‘need’ both copies. Also, the Canadian issue is deep groove due to RCA Canada pressing records for Warner Canada at this time, and it seems they used the same type of press as RCA Hollywood with the big bad deep groove. The only US issue with a (small label groove) is Columbia Terre Haute. Pitman and Santa Maria are both flat labels.
Thanks Mazzy for the review, much appreciated for your honesty. Not much of a Sabbath fan. That being said, Rhino did a bang up job on The Cars two albums so I need to order DEVO based on your take of it.
For fans. This week Tony Iommi interviewed on Eddie Trunk May 22 Sirius XM regards new 4 LP Sabbath set. He is the holder of all the Black Sabbath original tapes.

It’s adjusting volume of frequencies. ie more or less bass, midrange or treble. Opposed to a mostly flat recording that hasn’t been sweetened either way. You want to adjust levels, but you usually don’t want to start with one that’s always been adjusted. Exceptions always apply.
Hell, why not? 🤷🏻 Some of the Sabbath records were kind of "muddy" sounding, so if they can retain the balls the OG's had, and add clarity with a new "HiFi" sort of treatment, then that's great, at least in my book. 👍
Not in this video. But a week later a friend bright over a UK first Vertigo and a NEMs. Didn’t love the NEMS but the Vertigo was very good. Still thought the Artisan US Green was the best. Rhino second
@@mazzysmusic No. The high end on the rhino is too loud. Some might perceive this as sounding "good". True metal heads know the organic sound of the Vertigo. Vertigo UK is the best.
I think it’s fair question but I’m of the opinion your questions is irrelevant when it comes to Mazzy. I have no doubt he is truthful irrespective of how he received the record
A couple of things. Both the Verigo and WB were cut my original mixed master tapes. One in each country and both sound great. Slightly different. This new cut is from the US Warner Bros master tape with the different track on side two that I prefer. Kevin Gray had both OG US and UK copies to listen to when he did this new cut. . Also Warner Brothers only has North American rights to the Sabbath catalog. Vertigo, now owned by BMG, has Euro rights. So they don’t have access to each other’s masters, and cannot sell their editions in each other’s territories.
@@mazzysmusic .... to quote Tom Port , Hot Stampers : The best Green Label (Warner Brothers) pressings sound raw and real, with sound that is a perfect match for the band’s powerfully dark music. The soundfield is HUGE - back wall to front wall, floor to ceiling, and WIDE. The bass is Right On The Money - deep, well-defined, and punchy.
I hate using the term “heavy metal” in reference to these early Sabbath records. “Heavy Metal” to me is dumbed down and juvenile. If I have to label Sabbath it would be “Hard Rock.” Love, Kazzy
54 year old magnetic tape…think they deteriorated a speck? And they’re going to say this is the best.with processing substituted for lost fidelity….. I tire of this game., there aren’t people who really believe this are there? So many people have a stake it in…reminds me of the GOP I’ll go out on a limb for a lie if you do. Again if you think it’s great then you like processing……ask the re cut engineer what they did…
I would rather go deaf than listen to the same Black Sabbath record three times in a row. I really don't have an opinion of Black Sabbath other than I hate them. "Are we not men we are Devo" loved Devo! I saw them in a small venue back in the day. As usual, lovely video.

Great video, Mazzy! I'm anxiously awaiting my copies of both albums. Appreciate your insights.
Awesome! Thank you!✌🏼
Did the U.S. Black Sabbath album have a different guitarist? Who the flip is 'Tommy'?🤔
Of course Tony. Slip if the slips 🤷🏻♂️
Why would you need an audiophile pressing of Sabbath?
Because it's there. -George Leigh Mallory
It’s simply a well mastered analog cut of a well recorded almost all life recording.
Hell, why not? 🤷🏻
Some of the Sabbath records were kind of "muddy" sounding, so if they can retain the balls the OG's had, and add clarity with a new "HiFi" sort of treatment, then that's great, at least in my book. 👍
Very strange when a few years ago ,,, We were throwing our vinyl away
Are you comparing the true first press? It's called the "Philips Record Product Vertigo UK press."
Go find that one and then compare those.
@@CBT5777 well it depends on your rig and our room. I’ve heard so many different takes in this one. If you like it best that all that matters
@@mazzysmusic My US pressing also sounds amazing, but I'm willing to bet it sounds exactly like the Rhino.
wait if this is cut from a copy, how is it cut from the original master?
It’s from the original master used for all the Warner Brothers US issues beginning in 1970
Mazzy did you pay for these? hope that's not a rude question. Just important to know given that you're reviewing the Rhino reissue.
Not rude at all. The answer to your question is in the video. Watch it🤠
And I review lots of records I buy too. Honest takes either way
I think it’s fair question but I’m of the opinion your questions is irrelevant when it comes to Mazzy. I have no doubt he is truthful irrespective of how he received the record
Sorry, sent that when I was a third through the video. I’m happy as long as it’s disclosed. Don’t think everybody does that
@@slistone1940 I always do 🤠
I will do a video with the US 1st, UK 1st and the Rhino High Fidelity.
Great. Looking forward ✌🏼
It's a shame they used the Warner Brothers tapes and not the vertigo. That's the one you really want.
"no balls on it" is that an amphophile technical term?
Yes. I read in Stereophile Magazine years ago.
I hate using the term “heavy metal” in reference to these early Sabbath records. “Heavy Metal” to me is dumbed down and juvenile. If I have to label Sabbath it would be “Hard Rock.” Love, Kazzy
Good review. Gonna skip the Sabbath. Thanks!
54 year old magnetic tape…think they deteriorated a speck? And they’re going to say this is the best.with processing substituted for lost fidelity…..
I tire of this game., there aren’t people who really believe this are there?
So many people have a stake it in…reminds me of the GOP
I’ll go out on a limb for a lie if you do.
Again if you think it’s great then you like processing……ask the re cut engineer what they did…
Ballz!
Nothing beats the ORIGINAL Vertigo Swirl record
50 year old tape?
Nothing beats the Original Vertigo Swirl Press.
I haven’t heard the Vertigo. I know many love it, but the US greenie OG is very good too and probably the better track list
Makes no sense to only produce a small amount of anything if there is a large demand. I will never fall for that marketing crap.
FOMO rides again 🤣😂
Enough of the record company commercials, stick with the stories
I would rather go deaf than listen to the same Black Sabbath record three times in a row. I really don't have an opinion of Black Sabbath other than I hate them.
"Are we not men we are Devo" loved Devo! I saw them in a small venue back in the day. As usual, lovely video.
What ? I can’t hear you 🥸😵💫🤠
Jobs are a drag.
