Hey all. I'm finding a common theme with some of the comments. Yes, you could configure the VKB software to disable the first stage upon activation of the secondary stage. This would give you the exclusive secondary function, but you would lose the ability to have both activated at the same time. This mod gives you 3 distinct functions: 1 2 1+2 You can't get all three just with software as it depends on the physical state of the buttons.
My Gladiator actually came configured such that the second stage trigger would not press the primary trigger anymore. I had to configure the stick to press both buttons 1 and 2 when activating the second stage trigger. I ended up configuring the push-pull secondary trigger to let me just push button 2 if I chose. This meant I was giving up a button, however. So your mod looks like it is still superior! I will have to give it a try myself.
Note that via the VKB software you can configure your Gladiator's trigger such that only the second trigger stage fires when both are pressed. On the Profile > Buttons > Physical layer, change the function of cell 9 to 'Button D' and Change Master Button of that to 9 (then push your changes to the stick via Set in the Action tab).
doing it this way would mean you'd have to go into the software to change the config every time you want to switch between firing both or firing only one
Hello, I love that you made this. It is very impressive and a clever solution to trigger bindings. I am not as familiar with the VKB setup as some other joysticks. Several of my friends have them but I am one of those insane few that opted for the Virpils. I did use some other styles in the past from the Thrustmaster 16000s to logitech g940 and a few in between, but I am 100% sold on the Virpil style. Now I know that the VKBs are pretty similar, I think there is only a minor difference in them, like the VKBs don't have the thumb sticks. That being said the solution I found that works very well for me without modification is actually the outer trigger. The outer trigger has 2 stages, and the main trigger has 3 stages. (counting off, or released as a stage). The outer trigger on the virpils pull all the way through all of the stages of the main trigger pull by pressing against it and following it as it moves. I don't know if the VKB outer trigger works the same, by the look of yours it may not, but my solution was to use both triggers together. Stage one of both triggers of course do nothing, this is the natural state of the triggers fully released. Stage 2 of the main trigger fires weapon group 1 per my in game bindings. Stage 3 of the main trigger fires all weapons per the in game bindings. Stage 2 of the outer trigger fires weapon group 2 per the in game bindings. This means if I want to fire only weapon group 1, I use the main trigger. If I want to then transition into firing everything, I continue pulling the main trigger in to fire everything. If I want to fire weapons group 2 alone, I pull the outer trigger in. If I then want to transition into firing everything I just continue to pull the outer trigger until it pulls the main trigger which fires weapons groups 1 and 2. This has worked very well for me for 2 years, then with 3.24 of course they changed it so we have multiple groups. I have admitedly not played with it since, doing mostly trading, and my latest combat has been in the Guardian, so just fire all, but I think a similar setup as I had before will still work.
You'd have to be really careless/sloppy to do something that would cause vkb to deny a warranty claim. People have damaged the jst wire this creator talks about and VKB replaced it under warranty. I don't know if they were honest about damaging it themselves but I'm going to assume they were. Personally, I haven't damaged my jst connector but I did make an out of warranty request for a new small grip rest and they sent me the updated model which looks and feels better than what came with my gladiator NXT (non evo).
Great solution! For the left stick I ended up just assigning totally different commands to the two stages: primary is boost, and secondary is systems ready. So when first sitting in the seat I pull it all the way and it turns the ship on, but I'm on the ground so boost is irrelevant. And while boosting if I accidentally pull all the way to stage 2, systems on does nothing while flying. I should say I'm a HOSAM user so only my left stick has the trigger, and weapons are controlled on my mouse, but if I used two sticks I'd definitely be interested in this solution.
That's pretty neat! I use those sticks too, but I usually feel fine with just two weapon groups, one on each stick. Actually I'd have plenty of buttons if it wasn't for operator modes...
since the 3.24 Star Citizen update i have the left trigger set to change the weapon group and the deep press to reset back to the first weapon group (if i reach the last weapon group then light presses do nothing). so far it has worked well, but my right trigger is set to simply fire either the current weapon group or all weapon groups depending on pressure. not as immediately modular as the alternate fire setups, but it works for me and functions identically on all ships with more than a single weapon.
Hi, A very useful modification of the main firing trigger, although I realized too late that it is a left side variant. Luckily it's easy to advise and now I have it installed. A truly ingenious modification that should ideally be available straight off the production line. Thanks for the great work and file sharing. Pet
This is interesting to see how a hardware guy fixes the problem. I just reprogrammed what the switches do. On right hand each trigger is separate. On the left hand deep press activates trigger hold so you can let go. Also doesn’t void warranty :)
Fantastic! Excellent bit of engineering, a truely lovely mod! Any plan on selling or working with someone to print and sell the peices for us non-printing enthusiasts to buy?
Awesome if that works for you, customizing the set up is one of the nicest parts of the hobby and your result looks very nice and solid. However it sure looks very complicated for something you just can do in software or by getting a stick with 2 separate trigger buttons or by assigning 2 different buttons.
Energy is meta. I dont know anyone who runs energy and ballistic weapons. But good work on the design and printing. Its def a good mod in the event you dont need another trigger for firing and you can use it for another keybind.
Thank you I think I will try this. I don’t play SC, but for Elite Dangerous, I’ve wanted to use the secondary trigger without activating the first one, and this could do that. This would mean an easy way to make use of a button I wouldn’t otherwise.
I've been looking at different control options after getting back into Elite Dangerous and a desire to do some legit General aviation simulation... I have decided that a Yoke is the way to go, but have been wondering about DIYing some extra buttons... this really shows that modifications are possible.
This is brilliant thank you for sharing! Printing ASAP for mine. I kind of wish there were two triggers for index and middle fingers, but that would need to be an entirely different shaft design to work
Cool Idea. Personally, I use my trigger differently. I have ESP disabled by default, and have the first stage temporarily activate ESP, with the second stage firing all groups (I make sure to use weapons with homogenous projectile speeds)..
This is sick! I have a challenge for you should you be interested... I'm trying to come up with a way to create a pair of cheap stick mounts that will mount to my chair and swivel out of the way when I want to scoot my chair in for typing/FPS. My thought was maybe using VESA arms as mounts then fabricating a mounting plate adapter. The part that's stumping me is how to clamp/mount them to a (hyken) office chair in a non-destructive manner and without being overly complex. Pole mounts would work on certain chairs, but not on most new ones as the supports for the armrests are too fat.
Awesome mod, I've always found it annoying that it forced dual activation on the 2nd stage so seeing this is definitely something I'm going to look into adding
This is a good idea and I will be using it I do mining and this will be great at activating individual modules or q-dampener from my Ballistic or energy weapons
This is a great solution! Because of the dual stage trigger setup (and admittedly laziness) I tend to prefer using a single weapon type on my ship builds, but for ships like the f8 or f7series where having 2 different weapon types makes more sense due to the sheer amount of weapons, I would love to have something like this! Being able to swap between laser repeaters and ballistics on the fly would be stellar! I make do with the dual stage trigger, treating ballistics more as a damage boost, or sustain when fighting larger targets, but being able to straight swap between two groups would make putting out prolonged dps much more convenient and take some stress out of longer engagements for the rare times I run a full ballistic ship, specially against those damn terrapins
Hi, just an FYI, your video project is in an ultrawidescreen format, probably because you added your screen captures and gameplay captures to the project first, but as a result all the camera footage of assembly has the top, or top and bottom cut off. In future projects you may want to either chop off the sides of the captures to keep it 16:9, or shrink or better center the camera footage. I keep wanting to scroll up to see the top of the video but there' s nothing there! :P
Have you thought about contacting VKB to see if they'd be willing to adopt this design officially? That design looks really slick and if I had a (functional) 3D printer I'd already have one printing. for myself. Two, actually.
I've not reached out to them in the way you are describing. Though I suppose that a random youtuber creating a mod to their joysticks is a pretty safe way of conducting indirect R&D. I'd just hope I get to be in the loop if they do release something officially.
this is cool! for my use I would rather not have the double click work at all just have the 2 triggers separate. Still this is great. I might have to get one of my friends with a 3d printer to print one for me.
This could be done by limiting the travel of the primary trigger piece so that it bottoms out before making contact with the secondary switch. The onshape document is available publicly and could easily be modified to that end. If you wanted to do a one-off mod without the CAD work, adding some material to the backside of the primary piece would do the same thing.
This mod looks cool but for people who can't do it... Star Citizen has 4 weapon groups now. So you have one key to swap weapon groups and one to fire. So, you can now fire exactly what weapons you want when you want.
You can also set keybinds to address each group directly. So rather than switching between groups, you can set each group to a different button. This still saves you the action of switching groups by eliminating a button press. Just like a console control with buttons on the back, more options and a potential advantage when milliseconds count.
I like your creativity, I use virpil sticks, same issue; bigger issue is keeping palm on stick while using multiple buttons; wonder if you have a solution.
I have a couple questions that I hope you can answer. I don't have my own 3D printer, so I would appreciate you advice in ordering this printed from an Etsy service. Is it correct where the comments say that if I want two triggers (one left and one right) that I should specify one of them be "mirrored?" Also, what material do you think would be closest feeling to stock?
I'm investigating my options to facilitate more players getting their own. But there's a lot of questions that need to be answered. You do need to mirror the files. VKB most likely uses some kind of ABS. I've been using ABS-like resin and it feels fine.
Now I really wish I had a 3D printer instead of my chair mounts lol but gives me something to save for next I am sure I will find other uses for a 3D printer as well
I'm sure you're not in a hurry to take these things apart again, but if you have reason to do so, could I trouble you to measure those ballpoint springs? I feel like perhaps mine are slightly too long and I've noticed that holding the new secondary trigger will prevent the primary from popping back up if released. Wondering if maybe yours are slightly shorter perhaps.
I would just not put the screws back in and try reducing the spring length one round at a time. If the problem resolves, then you can close it up fully. If I remember, I'll try and measure the springs when I get off work.
I'm confused because this mod was meant for the right stick, but the STL file is oriented for the left stick. Could you please offer both versions and label them to avoid confusion? Also, I've noticed that when I press button #1 and then slide down to press button #2, button #1 doesn't release. If you deliberately release the main trigger, it's not a problem. But if you transition to button 2 while pressing button 1, button 1 doesn't release until the bottom part of the trigger is released. Is this a problem with my print or a consequence of the design?
you can simply mirror the files in the slicer. I do not have the sticking problem you are describing. Did you post process them as shown? You probably need to do a bit more sanding and at a higher grit.
@@OddJobEntertainment I look forward to it for more reasons that convenience.. I am a service connected disabled Veteran and this mod would help greatly in mapping functions to my stick because of my injuries making certain things hard to do, including certain movement. I too mainly play Star Citizen now along with X4 Foundations and a few 3rd person strategic, tactical and DnD style games. I look forward to seeing your next video and how try this out myself.
Hi, I love your trigger. I have a two stick VKB set up that I use in Star Citizen. Is the trigger available for purchase? I would like to convert both of my triggers. Thanks
I'm far and away not a competitive PVP pilot. My keybinds are also changing quite often, especially with recent game changes. I could make an keybind thought process video though.
you keep cutting away from us seeing the full removal of the top spring.... which is the one we the most need to see the full scene of the removal and insertion...
Sorry about that. Filming this kind of stuff is still very new to me. I'll take that into consideration for future videos. The long leg of the spring points up, and the short leg rests on the protrusion on the trigger piece. There's no adhesive holding it in. As long as you reinsert the spring leg pointing straight up, it will press against the plastic shell.
Any chance this will ever be for sale on etsy or somewhere else? I have little desire to get into 3d printing and I'd rather you get some money rather then contracting it out to a 3rd party.
@@OddJobEntertainment yes 2 buttons 1 is for stage 1 and when you stage 2 the second button pressed either that or vkb already makes a kit you can buy. but there are more buttons than you will ever need.
I generally don't sell physical products and instead sell files. I'm investigating my options but you can commission this to be printed using my pcbway link.
I'll probably tinker with the design a bit to make a V2. This is only the first working iteration. There's likely a way to reduce the travel distance, but we'd be talking very marginal gains.
@@Crazy-Chicken-Media you can cut 3mm silicone tube into the switch pegs, that will adjust the play between the trigger and switch. but if you add too long tube into secondary switch, it will trigger secondary trigger before primary.
@@OddJobEntertainment I personally would pay 40USD for a left and right set with the springs included and precut. 60USD total if you also performed the finishing work to all pieces. Shipping would be extra but I'd imagine it shouldn't be too bad due to the small weight and ability to fit in a small padded envelope.
@@OddJobEntertainment I am there now, using your link but I don't know how or what to order. Design Units? Material? Color? Process? Surface finish? ETC... too many options all of which I have no idea about.
Very nice! I don't have VKB joysticks for SC yet. I do have a Ender-3 V2 though. That said I never liked the idea of the two stage trigger. The way I used to fight in my Cutlass (pre-3.24.x) is I would put Panthers on both pilot controlled weapon groups. Then I would switch back and forth between the weapon groups, letting one weapon group recharge while firing with the second weapon group. The prevented the enemy ship's shields from ever recharging and I would never run out of shots because the depleted weapon group would fully recharge before the other weapon group would run through all of it's shots. This also enabled both weapon groups to be fired at the same time to deal a burst of increased damage. This mod would allow me to continue this tactic. Now I just need a set of sticks and to figure out the keybinds.
@@OddJobEntertainment Nice, but I don't have any ships that have that many pilot controlled guns currently. That will be nice if I acquire a Bucc or F7/F8 in game. My Cutlass and Starlancer have the most at 4.
Nice mod, but perhaps you should look into WinWing's Orion system as it would be a nice upgrade to those VKBs you're using. I looked at VKB, Virpil, and even considered upgrading my Thrustmaster Warthog (with mods) to the newer Thrustmaster offering. But after exhaustive research I settled on WinWing's Orion Base + J Grip F-16 Flight Stick and their Orion Throttle Base II + F15EX Handle Throttle Levers. Kinda expensive; ... okay okay, really expensive but worth every penny! What you crafted as a mod for your VKB is a non-issue with the WinWing. You can totally customize every aspect of the WinWing and its buttons through software or mechanically. I have half pull on main trigger as weapons group 1, lower pinky trigger as weapons group 2, ring finger pull on trigger 3 as weapons group 3 and main trigger FULL pull as weapons group 4 (ALL weapons fire). As a cool bonus feature, trigger 3 is also a flip trigger so when I flip forward, I go into missile firing mode and when I flip back down, I switch back to guns mode. Most SC players swear by their Virpils and VKBs but I tell you not to sleep on WinWings Orion setup if you can afford it. The most buttons on a stick and throttle on the market by a country mile (128+ buttons), simple to use software which allows custom key binds and with an additional upgrade kit you can have full rumble feedback in both the flight stick and throttles for weapon firing, missile launches and afterburner. All metal design, customizable cam design for dead zone and stick stiffness (added cost), rumble feedback, and built like a tank capable of killing a man in a bar fight. 🤗😎
I'm looking at all kinds of potential upgrades in the future. I'm particularly interested in force feedback, rumble is nice, but FF is a whole other beast.
You're supposed to set the big red button to the ballistics and the second stage trigger to fire all. Anyone who uses Buzzkillers premade keybinds has it like this.
My red button switches me to missiles. I don’t see how you’re going to tell anyone “well actually you’re supposed to…” we can set whatever button to whatever function for a reason. Buzzkiller is not for everyone. So I congratulate this man for making a solution that solves a problem.
@@WilBadgerGaming You actually can solve the problem that is stated at the start of the video, via VKB software that is what my comment was about. You definately get an "extra button" by doing this upgrade, i just do not see it wotrh it, since dual VKB NXT have a lot of buttons already
@zitruskiler Gotcha... I don't know. I have each controller fully bound and it would be nice to activate each half of the trigger independently of the other like he is stating pretty much for the exact reasons he made it. I know I'll be having a set printed out as soon as I can.
@@WilBadgerGaming Do you use your own config or one of the community`s? (Like subliminal or buzz). I personally use Subliminals (advanced, with VJoy), with some small tweaks and which allows to use a modifier button. With that there seems to be more than enough buttons for everything. I would say i do not even remember half of the bound buttons, since they are very rarely used.
Solving it via software means you're forced to choose whether you want both to fire or just alternate them by trigger stage. This mod lets you have it both ways at once.

I will keep that in mind for future mods.
awesome mod. thank you very much 🥰
No problem 😊
I have a couple questions that I hope you can answer. I don't have my own 3D printer, so I would appreciate you advice in ordering this printed from an Etsy service. Is it correct where the comments say that if I want two triggers (one left and one right) that I should specify one of them be "mirrored?" Also, what material do you think would be closest feeling to stock?
I'm investigating my options to facilitate more players getting their own. But there's a lot of questions that need to be answered.
You do need to mirror the files.
VKB most likely uses some kind of ABS. I've been using ABS-like resin and it feels fine.
Now I really wish I had a 3D printer instead of my chair mounts lol but gives me something to save for next I am sure I will find other uses for a 3D printer as well
It's a great tool to have for that kind of tinkering.
I just had first press be group 1, second press be all, and then I bound group 2 to the thumb trigger on top....
That's an option as well.
I’m sorry if you mentioned at the end. Did you make the printer file available?
Link in description
I'm sure you're not in a hurry to take these things apart again, but if you have reason to do so, could I trouble you to measure those ballpoint springs? I feel like perhaps mine are slightly too long and I've noticed that holding the new secondary trigger will prevent the primary from popping back up if released. Wondering if maybe yours are slightly shorter perhaps.
I would just not put the screws back in and try reducing the spring length one round at a time. If the problem resolves, then you can close it up fully. If I remember, I'll try and measure the springs when I get off work.
Nice work
Thanks! Hope you find it useful.
Is there a place to get this trigger for those of us that do not have printers and such?
Not yet, but I have big plans for V2 that you'll want to stick around for. Currently working on recording the video now.
Very nice mod!!
I hope it proves useful to you.
Buddy looking for that Raytheon 300K job
yup, Raytheon is actually top of my list, all memes aside.
That's a great mod! What a shame I don't have a 3d printer. :(
Hi, I love your trigger. I have a two stick VKB set up that I use in Star Citizen. Is the trigger available for purchase? I would like to convert both of my triggers. Thanks
I'll need to investigate a good option for making these more accessible.
Can you make a video of your gladiators keybings please that would be great to see
I'm far and away not a competitive PVP pilot. My keybinds are also changing quite often, especially with recent game changes. I could make an keybind thought process video though.
That would be awesome! Thank you!
Dang, do you have this for the mcg-u? this is a cool little mod for sc.
The first iteration is just the Gladiator. That's what I have. But I'd love to support more models in the future.
you keep cutting away from us seeing the full removal of the top spring.... which is the one we the most need to see the full scene of the removal and insertion...
Working on a solution.
makes little sense to me you can map other buttons for trigger
there's a button. it's meant to be pressed. I want control over that.
@@OddJobEntertainment yes 2 buttons 1 is for stage 1 and when you stage 2 the second button pressed either that or vkb already makes a kit you can buy. but there are more buttons than you will ever need.
I need this for my primes
I seen an Etsy account linked, do you sell these?
I generally don't sell physical products and instead sell files. I'm investigating my options but you can commission this to be printed using my pcbway link.
why did you chose to have so much dead space for the secondary trigger? I see it pressing against your finger, wont that be an issue in long fights?
I'll probably tinker with the design a bit to make a V2. This is only the first working iteration. There's likely a way to reduce the travel distance, but we'd be talking very marginal gains.
@OddJobEntertainment That's fair enough, That's why I wasn't critiquing the V1 too hard 😁
@@Crazy-Chicken-Media you can cut 3mm silicone tube into the switch pegs, that will adjust the play between the trigger and switch. but if you add too long tube into secondary switch, it will trigger secondary trigger before primary.
Why not just assign group one to trigger and group 2 to the red button like in buzzkillers profiles?
There's an endless number of workarounds, but none of them make that secondary trigger directly accessible.
Please watch your camera so you keep the subject in the camera view when explaining things.
You mean I am not supposed to be using dual guitar hero controllers? I always thought that is what dualstick mean!
No, you heathen, it's supposed to be the drum controller, that's why it comes with drum sticks.
Nice !
That's great but when are you sending the joystick out us, you did say we needed it?
Well, since you NEED it, how much are you willing to pay? 🤔
@@OddJobEntertainment I personally would pay 40USD for a left and right set with the springs included and precut. 60USD total if you also performed the finishing work to all pieces. Shipping would be extra but I'd imagine it shouldn't be too bad due to the small weight and ability to fit in a small padded envelope.
u need food , water and gas for at least 2 years
Help me out here, I'm not getting what you're saying.
Can I buy this?
You can commission it to be printed using my link with pcbway.
I do not have access to a 3d Printer. Is anyone selling this mod?
You can use services like pcbway (using my link helps me as well).
@@OddJobEntertainment I am there now, using your link but I don't know how or what to order. Design Units? Material? Color? Process? Surface finish? ETC... too many options all of which I have no idea about.
i need this for my virpils
If Virpil wants to send me a pair, I will definitely make it happen.
But do you need yo take the base off though? 😂
Turns out, no. You don't need to take it off. I'm glad at least one person laughed.
Can anybody print these for me?? I have no printer and this is an awesome mod.
Sadly I don;t have a 3D printer and all the services in the UK are massively overpriced.
DOPE!!!!!!!
Now I just need a set of sticks and to figure out the keybinds.
you could do the same thing with this mod but with 4 weapon groups simultaneously
Do you also use staggered fire mode?
@@OddJobEntertainment Nice, but I don't have any ships that have that many pilot controlled guns currently. That will be nice if I acquire a Bucc or F7/F8 in game. My Cutlass and Starlancer have the most at 4.
@@BenPhou I use stagger fire with cannons. Repeaters fire so quickly it doesn't matter either way.
Please someone make this so that available purchase. I am willing to buy just don't make it crazy expensive. max $20-$30
As a fellow citizen of the 'verse, I want a left/right pair!
Just shared this with my org
Are you going to offer these on your Etsy?
I will have to look at how I could do this.
There's no right way to set up a keybind. It's entirely personal preference. But this mod still gives players more options to choose for themselves.
My red button switches me to missiles. I don’t see how you’re going to tell anyone “well actually you’re supposed to…” we can set whatever button to whatever function for a reason. Buzzkiller is not for everyone. So I congratulate this man for making a solution that solves a problem.
Whats the point of making all of this when you can solve the same problem via software?
You clearly are missing everything. You can not separate the two triggers thru software.
