Still going with KMC for any potential double-sleeping needs. Informative and helpful guide as always.
Sleeving, not sleeping autocorrect.!
+Major Largo it's OK buddy we all like to double sleep
+Major Largo Newer Perfect Fits are too big to double sleeve
+J _Twizzle For real? Cause KMC makes the Perfect Size card barriers, not the Perfect Fits. Those would be from Max Protection, reviewed in this vid. Websites and content creators can't stop calling the KMC ones "Perfect" Fits for some reason.
I'm talking about the KMC inner sleeves.
I appreciate the Lightning Bolt art in the background from the late, great Mr. Rush. Thank you.
with side loaders, perfect fit sleeves, an ultra pro matte sleeve, and a penny sleeve, you can quadruple sleeve your cards. ultimate perfection.
Just imagine how thick your 60 card deck will be! You'll probably also be able to slice a tomato with your card.
I could see the side loading sleeves being used better for keeping cards safe in binders. Is this something you have looked into professor?
+cole defoe I actually like this idea; sleeve from one side, insert into the sheet from the other. Keep a binder safe from water damage, even more so than one with traditional sleeves.
+cole defoe While you do have a fair point, why not use KMC's and have your cards be perfectly protected in all scenarios?
+mysterioso2006 my reasoning is if you have a sideloading binder the cards would be better protected in there. this is just a hypothesis however. but I do see your point for just kmc's.
+mysterioso2006 Side loading inners for side loading binders?? If a side loaded inner would have problems sealing in a top/bottom loaded sleeve, would a top/bottom loaded KMC inner not have the same sealing problems in a side loaded binder?
+Jon Reyes this is precisely my thoughts on the inner sleeves.
Aren't the side-loading sleeves supposed to e used with side-loading binders and not a regular sleeve?
thats exactly what i use them for. never for using on decks
@@Olortegui14 Yeah but it's still a good idea for the professor to warn people away from them for their decks.
Thanks for getting me onto KMC's, they really did fit perfectly when I double sleeved. I would've ordered random stuff on ebay if I hadn't seen your channel.
Some dumb-ass in our local playgroup spilled an entire water bottle (1.5 liter) over the table we were playing at. Luckily we all double-sleeve so no cards were damaged. I'm the dumb-ass by the way... :/
Which sleeves was everyone using? The side or the bottom loaders
@@oceanside664 top/bottom.
Dear Professor, after watching almost all of your review and comparison videos, you convinced me now to double sleeve my cards with KMC Hyper Mat and Perfect Size sleeves. Before that i'd just used the Ultra Pro sleeves and thought that they are the best off all.

Forward to 2020, god tier Dragon Shield sealable perfect fits bless us with their glory.
I was literally thinking about this like yesterday. Side loading perfect fits.
You're on the ball, Prof Brine.
I recently re-watched your previous video regarding the review of Legion Defender inner sleeves, upon visiting my LGS I found that they did not have the KMC sleeves in stock. So my LGS suggested the Legion Defenders as an alternative. With a little bit of hesitation I caved in and bought them to give them a try. It was a pleasant surprise to find that all of the sleeves fit perfectly with little to no variance between each sleeve. Unless I was just lucky, I would have to suggest a revisit on reviewing Legion Defenders in your next inner sleeves video/review.
Hey Prof! Huge fan of your videos. I was just thinking, in the interest of "scientific accuracy" would you be able to include a control on test like these? In this case, a card that was only in the outer sleeve. It would make the results much easier to compare. Thanks for your time and keep on keepin' on!
Another interesting point you could mention is that a big factor in double-sleeving for me is protecting my foils from ambient humidity. I live in Australia by the coast where the humidity is consistently high year-round and foils will curl in days unless I sleeve them in a very tight inner sleeve like the KMC Perfects. Although no inner sleeve provides an air tight seal, as close to one as possible is achievable with double-sleeving. These sleeves, in particular the side loaders, would not suffice at all for that purpose given your testing and on that basis alone they would be a fail for me.
Did you choose Teferi's Moat on purpose at 6:45 to be ironic?
+Damocles Glad someone spotted it.
+Tolarian Community College Nice review, though I kind of don't see a situation happening where a double sleeved card (s) get submerged in some liquid but what ever :D have to prepare for everything right? >XD
+SilentZombie Well, for serious players you probably are right SilentZombie, but think about the people who do MTG after school/University/College, where they maybe carrying food or drinks in their bag with their decks. I have friends who had a juice box puncture or a drink that wasn't completely closed, but did not find out till near the end of the day, when they pull out their deck, and almost every card had a purple stain somewhere.
Fair enough, it happens, I personally take great pains to keep liquid away from my stuff to the point I'm very paranoid >XD
Can wait for the full review on the website!
+Tolarian Community College KMC is the best inner sleeve by far for double sleeving, however most packets I get are consistently inconsistent. What I mean is that usually around half of the inner sleeves in the packet are perfect, the other half are normally smaller and just barely cover the bottom edge of the card and don't always make the "perfect seal" you mention during the SCG inner sleeve review. Very rarely are all the perfect sleeves in the pack the perfect size. Does this occur with you Professor, or anyone else?
I have been having that issue with kmc perfect fit also. I have purchased them from 3 difrent places and have found there is a lot of inconsistency. It's a lot more then it use to be. I'm finding almost 25-30% of them just don't fit right.
I also have been having this same issue as of late. I have _always_ used the same kmc hyper mats with the kmc perfect fits. I never had any problem getting them to fit until recently. Every pack of perfect fits I have purchased within the past four months has had 20-25% of the inner sleeves too large to slide into the hyper mats. What is going on with kmc all of a sudden? Lax quality control? Cutting corners?
***** I don't mind when the perfect fit sleeve is much larger than the card. I find an issue when it barely covers the bottom edge. So I have to go through and make sure I put the larger perfect fits on my more expensive cards. Yeah I don't understand, their quality has gone down. It's still the best out there, but it shouldn't be going down.
+Vince Inman I should have specified that the variance in size I was referring to was in width, not length. I too prefer a bit extra at the bottom; it makes a more secure seal that way. My issue with them is primarily trying to squeeze a perfect fit into a hyper mat that is roughly the same width. It catches and won't go down.
***** Gotcha. Yeah I haven't had the width issue, just the length
"Theres no sleeves with the opening tightly sealed, nor do I imagine anything to make that happen"
Dragon Shield: Hah yeah?! Well let's change that shall we!
I really like this, I also like knowing my deck will be protected when playing in the ocean.
I spilt a coffee on my favourite temur standard deck. I double sleeved with kmc hypermatt and the perfect fits as recommended. A+++++++ thanks prof! No damage at all to the cards. Even managed to wash the outer sleeves and quality was so good can still use them.
Hi Professor,
This is a fantastic video as always!
I wanted to comment and say that I love the idea of a grade roster on your website, it will be super helpful to compare side-by-side quickly when looking for specific products. But I also want to comment that without context (i.e. your videos) these grades may not be quite what would be best for consumers who need info. Perhaps including a one-line description of *why* each grade was given out, along with a link to the full video for context would be helpful. You might already be planning something like this (or something even better) but I wanted to give you some feedback in advance on the idea.
Keep doing what you do... you're fantastic, and I'm so happy to see more content and your channel be successful!
I personally think that Ultimate guard should combine their resealable inner sleeves with the side loading format. you'd have to find a way to get rid of that lump on the card from the seal, but I think it would be a good design.
I love that youtube silver play button trophie on the book case behind you professor! We are the Tolarian Community
UltraPro also manufactures inner sleeves similar to those by KMC. I think they're just called Pro-Fits. I did the water test using a token card and it came out dry. If you have not done a review for these sleeves, Professor, I would like to see this in an upcoming product review video. Thanks again for all you are doing.
i think either ultimate guard or dex came out with a really good perfect fit that you might want to check out. Im using them on my marchesa deck and they seem to be very similar to the kmc sleeves. i think they are a bit tighter then theirs though.
I'm going to continue to double sleeve my cards using the KMC perfect fits. Thanks professor!
great video as allways professor! I love your reviews! they help so much. thanks! :)
Loving the TH-cam subscriber award on the shelf! :D
Since I haven't seen anyone mention it yet, I guess I'll say something. I think the ultimate guard side loading sleeves are meant as another way to triple sleeve. That's what I was told when I was at my LGS. They fit perfectly with the KMC hyper mats and inner sleeves.
Giving all the side loaded ones an automatic fail based just on the water test is pretty harsh in my opinion. They will still protect the card from dust and debris. Besides, the water test will have varying results based on what kind of outer sleeve you use as well
Nice to see the Bolt print on the wall. Good call.
As for results, I'm sticking with KMCs. No point to cheap out on double sleeving. I've also started just double sleeving everything. It's too easy to nick a card when swapping between decks or re-sleeving.
yeah, i feel like side load inners have to be used with side load outers if you're thinking about protection. obviously not as protective as the normal double sleeving since more edge is exposed, but could be much faster and easier to handle if you move your cards around a lot
A thought occurred to me as I was watching this. Side loading sleeves would be good for use with a side loading binder? Perhaps this is the way to use them. You would then get the same protection within you binder as with a deck of double sleeved top loading sleeves and would not need to worry if you spilled a drink on your binder. Just a thought. Also I love this channel and all your reviews, I only started playing mtg about a year ago, and I have you to thank for all the products I have purchased.
The water sound effects were a nice touch :)
I would be interested in seeing how the side-loading inner sleeve works with a side-loading outer sleeve, such as the ultra-pros. Furthermore I'd like to see how the KMC perfect fits faired in the side loading outer sleeve.....
perhaps this is the intended use for the side loading sleeves? (although poor executed)
Hurrah! A new product review!
You said @11:58 that there would be a list of grades for all products you review on your website, but it seems that info isn't up yet? Has that idea been scrubbed?
You should make a video about/showing your collection of Magic cards. We see you pull out various expensive cards during videos but we never get to see your whole collection.
I agree! :D That would be a cool video.
There are also side-loading outer sleeves, so I'm thinking that might be a good thing to test next.
I hope you have extras of the cards used for testing.
We need a new inner sleeve video for 2023
I think the slide loaders are better for the slide loading binders. Can you do a test where you use them in the side loading pages?
What if you were to use a side loading inner sleeve with a side loading outer sleeve? Would it offer the same protection as a top loading inner with a top loading outer? I'd be interested to know. Of course we could also just avoid side loaders altogether...
Would love to see one of these videos covering hard sleeves (top loaders)
give us your thoughts about Eldrazi in Modern and your predictions of what will happen
Hey, professor, a question-exercise for you: what about spirits in modern? With a Kamigawa flavor to them at that?
Hopping for an answer with my most inspired... spirit?
I think the side-loading inner sleeves could be used for protecting cards in a side-loading binder. It may be a hassle to switch inner sleeves between binder and deck, but I think I can see some appeal (not enough to purchase though).
Besides of KMC Perfect Fits with lot of TCGs I have started to use KMC Character Sleeves with my Bushiroad anime sleeves that I use with my WS decks to keep those sleeves in good condition since those are not easy to get like most other art sleeves and also cost more. Those are sturdy sleeves that you put top of other sleeves and thus those are little bigger than standard sized sleeves.
That Chris Rush art on the wall... RIP
@Tolarian Community College, have you tried the KMC "Side in Perfect" sleeves?
you do amazing product reviews keep up the great work, you make me want to go buy some KMCs now
Have you tried using side loading outer sleeves like the ones ultrapro offer? I think they would work better with the side loading inner sleeves.
could you also do a test for the BCW inner sleeves that are made to fit insside the BCW deck guards? id like to see how these fair to your standards. Thanks also like alot of your product videos
I know for my personal trade binder the pages are side-loading and this is good for me so i can have the inner sleeves go against the direction of the pockets in my binder. this means i don't have to double sleeve cards in my binder and stretch out the pockets as has been happening the last year or so.
Did you test out the Ultimate Guard Precise Fit Releasable Sleeves? They have an interesting flap design to leave no opening at all.
+Ev0clipse I reviewed those here: th-cam.com/video/CmHT_m_utRc/w-d-xo.html
Been scrolling up and down a bit looking for an answer, without luck. So here goes:
Since the sideloaders are so loose, could one potentially be using a inner sleeved card, put it in a sideloader sleeve before putting it in a regular sleeve for an almost perfect sleeving?
- Thor
Wow that Lightning Bolt print! If you don't mind me asking, where did you get that and how much did it cost?
RIP Chris Rush :(
I wonder if you can pull off triple sleeving with those side-loading inner sleeves and a traditional top/bottom-loading inner sleeve :P
Professor, not that I want to buy any of these inner sleeves ( sticking with KMC as per your recommendation ) but perhaps they would work better with dragonshield sleeves since they have a tighter fit than a KMC. Did you test any of these inners with dragonshield?
What would you say of side-load inner sleeves for triple sleeving? Considering that we now see that a KMC perfect fit could fit inside a ultrapro side loading sleeve?
Perhaps the side loading sleeves could be used to triple sleeve the cards with both KMC products?
I would note that side loaders may well be useful with sideloading outer sleeves. I am not sure why I would be using side-loading sleeves, but if there's some really nice custom desgin or a good art one from somewhere and was willing to lose some protection by going side loader, then even kmc perfects would have the same issue these side loaders have in top loaders, and so a side-loading design having them reversed in the outer sleeve would be the only double sleeving option.
It would be great to see a video showing all the A's of 2015, as (as far as I'm aware) you haven't done that yet :)
Prof have you ever thought about setting up a store to sell things that you rate highly or even have Tolarian Community College merchandise?
This gentleman could go on for hours talking about Magic the gathering stuff and I'd listen to every word even though I'm not into that.
when will you have the $20-$25 standard deck techs you used to do for the new sets release??
I'm just curious, on the side loading sleeves, can you double sleeve a card inside of the side sleeves and then sleeve it in a normal sleeve? I know it sounds silly, but if you can it seems like that may have been the intention on those sleeves imho.
Hey Professor, this is great what you're doing, very usefull! But I'm kind of stuck with something similar. I use the KMC Perfect Sizes along with Dragon Shield outer sleeves. Now what i've come accross is this, card + Inner sleeve + Copper outer sleeve works perfectly. The Fusion color also works great, but the Blue ones tend to be just a smidge narrower & it practically always results in the card sliding down out of the inner sleeve.
I find this to be a bit strange being the same product from the same manufacturer, only a different color. Now I'm wondering if you have noticed that problem too, and if so (or if not), would you please do a little testing on that?
I love my Dragon Shields & I'm very fond of the Copper too, but i like a little bit of variety in what my decks look like. Only now I'm affraid to buy different colors of them, just for this reason.
Thanks in advance and greetings from Belgium, keep up the great work!
That Shadowmage infiltrated those Ultra Pros.
what if there were side-loading outer sleeves? you wouldn't be able to "mash" them to shuffle, but normal riffle-shuffling would be much better. i guess even with proper-fitting side-loading inner sleeves there would still be a much shorter distance for any liquid to travel, as it would now be going across the card instead of all the way down it, and the opening would be much wider as well.
Is that a Christopher Rush Lightning Volt Signed print or Just a Print at 2:05 ????
+Bronze Vulpes Signed print.
+Tolarian Community College What a Fine Piece, Historical.
Greetings.
I really want a opinion on the Ultimate guard re-sealable strip inners.
is there a difference between the max protection sleeves and the shuffle tech sleeves that come in a card box with yet more (too small to double sleeve) sleeves. I got that product and am happy with them. honestly if I were to mix them and my kmc perfect fits, I wouldn't be able to tell the difference (happened).
is it perhaps possible to place a kmc perfect fit inside the looser sideloading sleeve and fit it in a standard sleeve. That would be a tad bit much but hey mabey they could be good for someing.
Hey Professor,
Could you do a video on building decks to fight the meta and/or casual decks for a competitive format on the local level and how best to go about construction of that nature for the commander and/or legacy formats? Also, could you do another video with Baron Sengir? I really enjoyed that video for commander. :) thanks for another great video :)
My bad I meant modern and/or legacy formats but commander would be cool as well :)
So.... What if you double sleeve with ultra pro side-loading sleeves with the openings on either side, and then put it in a wider sleeve, like say dragon shield? Will it blend-I mean will it pass the water test then? I'm genuinely curious but not nearly enough to find out myself lol
I have the ultra pro pro fit sleeves. they work out well for me.
great video and very informative
While I get that the side loaders are terrible for double sleeving, wouldn't they work better for putting into side loader binders? Maybe not the loose ones, but the first set you showed us might be better used for a binder.
I feel like you should have used the KMC sleeves in your experiment, not only as a control, but also to reinforce the notion that they are the best.
Regardless, good video Professor c:
Side sleeves seem fine for altering purposes, creating a straight line to keep the text box side clear of paint.
Gotta keep this bookmarked for when I need to go swimming with my Sliver deck.
Thanks for mentioning Pokémon! :D I watch a lot of videos and I think that they're great but I don't understand most of the MTG stuff since I play the Pokémon TCG ^-^ I can still relate to the card merch videos and the "is it worth to buy X?" videos since there are booster boxes and such in pokémon aswell. Keep up the good work!
" The ultrapro is damaged along the side, because of course it is" I don't know why but that cracked me up.
What if the inner sleeve is bottom side loaded? As if it is open halfway up on the side and halfway to the left on the bottom.
Okay I know this has nothing to do with this video but it would be amazing if you could make a video on the newly spoiled eternal masters set!!!! Thank you professor!!!
Wow! James May playing MTG! Subscribed!
Just out of plain curiosity, if the side loaders were so loose, why not triple sleeve with two, one on each side? Thoughts on that?
Might be a stupid comment, but, would the side loading sleeves be fine for triple sleeving?
With them being so wide maybe even quad sleeving lol, starting with a side sleeve to the left, then an inner sleeve down, side sleeve right, then a normal outer sleeve.
I'm looking to double sleeve my sports and Star Wars collectible cards. The sports card community consensus method is to put in penny sleeves and then toploaders, but I don't like the method because they talk up so much space, and can't be put into binder pages. I would like to be able to double sleeve them into clear deck sleeves like Magic/Pokemon cards, but I hear KMC perfect fits don't fit on sports and collectible cards. Is there something out there for non-TCG card collectors like me?
I do wonder: Would those side loading sleeves be/do any good when used in a side loading binder?
Actually I think (I hope) the intended use of the side loader inner sleeves might be meant for side loading card folders? That's actually why I'm excited for the side loader sleeves.
+Tolarian Community College Do you think the issues with the sideloading sleeves could be alleviated if they began producing side loading normal sized sleeves?
since the side loaders are more loose would it be good to use as the 2nd layer of triple sleeving since it would essentially create an even smaller possible opening in one of the bottom corners?
buunya~
what if you used side loading outer sleeves? like the inside sleeve and outside sleeve openings on opposite sides?
I've always been against sideloading inner sleeves, but maybe they are made for sideloading sleeves in general? I think I've seen them somewhere.
so double sleeveing is ONLY to protect from water? I started double sleeving when I noticed my cards were getting fine scratches at the TOP of the card (the opening). To me thetop loading seems easier and less frustrating to double sleeve I HAVE NOT PURCAHASED these yet. but in tems of just protection from dust and a looser easier fit into a sleeve can't this be an option?
Hi professor! Your videos were always helpful and now I'm a big fan of KMC sleeves (and I even double sleeve my tokens). Can you review the new KMC Silky Matte for us?
Would Side-loading inner sleeves be a problem if you had side loading outer sleeves?
Hi Professor,
I'm a poor college student, and I have a lore binder of 1000 foil but cheap cards that sort of is like a "comic" of magic from urza to shadows. I use the standard ultrapro Platinum binder pages, but now I just want to sleeve them up for a little extra protection, just in case some stray dust get in there. The cards are purely for archival purposes, they are never leaving the binder. I was hoping to use the Ultimate Guard Side Loading since its loose enough to fit two cards per binder pocket, and so I dont have to purchase like a ton of KMCs. Could this be a viable alternative? Anyone else done this as well?
Thanks!
what about using a kmc and a side loader together to keep the kmc from sling up.
If those side loading sleeves are so loose why don't you try to sleeve them with to of them on each side and then into a normal sleeve? Kinda curious if that would be a good idea
