Your missiles performed way better than his…Those were not neutral merges by geometry, furthermore sometimes he was turning away from you after a plus-altitude-merge which is a strange tactic…

There was a Draken pilot who ejected straight into mossy wet ground. I think they just left him there. Can barely get vehicles to such an area. Back in the 60's.
There were a couple of times that if the Gripen missile had dropped the flanker would have been done, but I think he said he thought it didn't drop because the system knew it was too close.

Gripen prefers to tagteam it with datalinks, sensor fusion and meteor strikes, while the Flanker is like the ogre ninja - it's massive, yet it still manages to sneak up behind you and then you're dead. Bit of a mismatch to put the Gripen in this situation but does demonstrate pretty well just how lethal the Su-30SM is in a knife fight
The problem with vectoring is that you burn energy. Making you an easy target for other fighters. Thai Gripen and Chinese trained against each other and Gripen had problems with dogfight 1v1 but the Su had problems with BVR combat scenarios.
Ol' Sven had to retire on a medical discharge, severe tendinitis from beating on viggen engines with his trusty snow shovel. He made out ok, full bennies - lives in a nice neighborhood with his wife on the Baltic outside Stockholm. Pays one of the neighbor teens to shovel his driveway in the winter. Plays Santa for the little kids at Christmas. Everyone loves him.
Since I've been subscribing to your channel, I've heard and seen everything about one-circle,first-turn kills, but until that first kill, the SU-30 got in the match, I'd never really appreciated that capability. That is beautiful and terrifying at the same time. Amazing vid GS. Thanx!
The tactic of flying barely above a stall is perfect in a 1v1 where your opponent is not allowed bvr missiles and not allowed to fire Fox 2s until after the first turn. In the real world where your enemy brings Fox 3s and friends this doesn't work as well.
Absolutely, in the real world you're going to be shooting a Fox 3 well before the merge. The only time you're going to get in a merge realistically is bouncing someone which is rare and maybe a 4v1 although it's likely you'll get smoked before making the merge.
Essy way to solve abusing that nonsensical tactic would be to allow gun in initial merge, would force both pilots to come in with enough speed to not be a sitting duck in the opponents gunsight
@@AlexKall that takes away the pilots agency - and oportunity to make mistakes - from the engagement because then both will come in at the set minimum speed. just allow gun to be used in the merge - sure it has its own drawbacks but would 100% prevent oponents coming to merge at near stall speeds to abuse theyr min turning radius in supermaneuverability "mode" also would kinda force them to not to come directly nose to nose AND would be far more ralistic because in real fight noone will be adhering to some "gentlemanly agreement" to not to shoot in a direct headon. Sure its 50/50, you dont like it hten dont merge in a way that makes you go nose to nose with the oponent
This super slow one-turn merged fights, in an era where nations are churning out highly accurate BVR supersonic missiles... It does feel a bit like getting REALLY good at hand-to-hand combat when everyone is using fully automatic long-range weapons
I think most people forget that Gripen is a light fighter designed for a specific missions in a specific way in a specific area. When Saab designed it they didnt try to make the best fighter cause that wasnt plausible they went for the best for the Swedish airforce. This is what most people forget when they shit on the Gripen but even with this being said its one hell of a fighter.
That old school splinter camo paintjob is super nice, also I like that the 39 seems to be from the F7 wing to which I am sort of a neighbor. My uncle used to fly 37's out of there back in the day, they had the same color scheme.

I fly the eurofighter many many times, I have flown the rafale, as for other mods they are not mature enough to be shown on the channel, as they mature I will fly them, an example of this would be the Su-47

The modern dogfight with high off-bore missiles strikes me as very similar in concept to historic fencing with a longsword and no armor, what the German treatises called "bloßfechten" (literally, bare fencing, as in naked). Any opening, no matter how small, risks taking an incapacitating hit. Observe, maneuver, guard, and commit to that one strike when you have an opening. Afaik, the same dynamic applied to Japanese swordsmanship when no armor was worn. (In fact, taking that parallel to its extreme, a modern fighter jet could be compared to a Japanese warrior, unarmored, carrying a bow and sword. You *want* to be doing the balance of your work with the bow, the sword is a secondary, contingency weapon.)
I think short-range missiles are getting so advanced & lethal that short-range dogfights will become a thing of the past. The highly maneuverable Flanker will have little advantage when the next generation of missiles will likely not even need to be pointing in the general direction of their target when launched.
You should do a dog fight in each planes designed encounter. So like an F-35 having AWACS on hand and sneaking around a flanker that will go direct for the kill. Things like that
only rule is don't shoot, other than that you can do what you want, its part of a pre merge set up, we do it in guns only fights trying to build turning room, he can deny it nothing about dogfights is intended to be fair.
idk if this works but to avoid ejecting inverted in that situation try jamming the rudder in on the side u have a wing and use the stick to "roll in that same direction" it should reduce lift on ur functional wing and hopefully allow u to roll out of the inversion. Maybe in theory this works if u still have control.
Great content as always, really enjoy your vids.. Poor Flanker nearly every missile shot missed. Even the Deadly 30mm took more rounds than necessary to effect a kill.... Hmmmm

These modern planes are really scary in a dogfight but it must look so cool from the ground to watch them dance.
The Gripen did better than I expected. Imagine what one turn beast it would be with vectoring.

I got the impression that the stripe in the Gripens canope is a bit of a problem.
In a computer simulation where you can't just lean over, yes.
In reality it's close enough to the pilots face that you can just see around it with at least one eye, or just tilt your head a bit.
The camo paint scheme on the Gripen in the first round looks amazing.
As a swede, hoping that the Gripen would do good - I was holding my breath threw long portions of the video..

What kills me is just how small the Gripen is. You’d think it’d have the slight edge against the SU-30 but, nope.
