As a winner but also judge of potjie competitions, I come from a long lineage of potjie people. My one uncle was the pot bread king. Potjie isn't just any food made in a Dutch oven, but the METHOD is what differentiates between a mere stew and a potjie. A true traditional potjie never gets stirred, the meat is browned first without fat or oil added. A traditional potjie takes between five and eight hours. The old togryers called it togkos. The name "potjie" is something that showed its head maybe only 40-odd years ago.

Great video Kyle! Our West Coast is truly something special, will go back there any day again. Fully agree on your take, no latest / greatest / fanciest kit needed to do what you do, less is more so to speak. Simply go out & take in the experience & not the gear you do it with. Cheers dude!

Great videography and sound track. Very cool. I’m glad I stumbled across your channel. I’ll be binge watching from now on. Did you need permits to camp there? And how safe is it? Thanks for a great show 👍🏻

    Hey Kyle,
It’s the 3rd or 4th time I’m watching this blog of yours.. the west coat beach camp is our next big ticket item. Great videography! And that potjie looked delicious.
May I ask what that campsite was called please ?
It was surprising the see the jeep get stuck with the trailer. Was that a case of being caught out by driving with not enough momentum or tyre deflation? I know the camera doesn’t always do justice..
And one last thing. It’s a take it or leave it kinda deal. I noticed where you placed your fridge. Behind the passenger side head rest. My friend, it’s not your bad driving, it’s other people’s poor driving. If you have an airbag go off, that fridge will rip the head rest straight out. And you know where it’s going to land. I’m not trying to be a doomsday person. But I always pack with the idea of “if something” moves.
Anyway. Love the Chanel. I always dreamt of a Saint Bernard growing up.
PS: don’t forget the campsite name 😊 and how was the wind???
    Peace and love ✌🏻

      Howzit Jonathan,
Firstly, thank you for watching our videos and retuning to the channel, we hope that you are enjoying the content!
Thank you for your message too. I appreciate the time taken to type it out!
Regarding the fridge, you’re absolutely right. Even things like clothing bags should always strapped down. With having the dogs in the back, it makes it hard do this, however, we now place the fridge right at the bottom, instead of what you saw in this video, the dogs ontop of it. Still not ideal.
In terms of the campsite, it doesn’t have a name. It’s one of the spots which we have found over the years on the way up to Groenriver after the mining site past Brand se Baai.
There are plenty of spots and locations to stay at and the only way to find the good ones is by exploring the roads down to the beach.
What caught the Jeep out was very soft sand, lack of momentum, the weight of the trailer and the Driver not knowing the area well as it was his first time there; he didn’t anticipate how soft and thick the sand was in that one particular spot. A bit unlucky. If we had to detach his trailer, he would have driven out just fine but we didn’t want to go through that effort, hence opting for a very light snatch.
Thanks again for watching and commenting! I hope that you will continue to do so in the future!

    Is their cellphone signal?

    • @SimplyOverlanding
      @SimplyOverlanding  ปีที่แล้ว

Hi Michael, cell reception is sporadic and isn’t guaranteed, it’s location dependent.
By traveling on the main gravel road (before turning off to select a campsite), you will find some spots with good cell coverage.
My experience is that as soon as you turn off the main gravel road or travel further north, cell reception is harder to come by.

Traditional potjie never had curry or condiments. Consider the practicalities of transport riders with ox wagons. Young people don't seem to understand what "traditional" really means.

Enjoyed the video but the background music was irritating. Fix that and more people will watch your content. From gentle music to ridiculous drumming and synthesised rubbish,

Thank you very much for watching our video and for providing feedback for improvement.
As we are still very new to content creation, we don’t have much tools or equipment at our disposal, however, we do aim to improve with each video released.
Thanks again for the feedback and we hope that you will stick around to watch our next adventure.

Well said on not needing all the equipment. It is nice to have kit to make your life more comfortable, but I think with some of the content guys it starts becoming mostly about all the equipment they can get sponsored
