For anyone watching this, this is basically the Liberal Arts opinion about the school. The university is really known for its STEM majors. People in STEM majors definitely have a different opinion about the school.
@@user-hw9fr4fr6q The entire first half? You're talking about 1:00 where the girl is taking about colored people? Our president is a newly instated black president that was voted on by the school committee. This school has one of the most diverse colored populations with only 46.8% of the school actually being white.... There are actually more colored people at the school than white people if you can read that percentage correctly. And about the school deaths that seem to happen every semester. Its horrible that people die, but with 33,000 students and roughly 2 deaths per semester, thats only 0.0061% of the student population per semester and with that many students its probably not something that can be avoided 100% with every student aged 18-22 making their own choices on and off campus.
@@Jinouga502 Yes. It is great that we have diversity within the entire community. I am happy that people of my color are beginning to strive in positions like the new president. But there are still events like Sean Urbanski stabbing and the alt-right group (fall 2019) who come on campus who voice their prejudice ideals.
I found it really difficult to find quiet place to study anywhere on the campus. Everywhere is noisy; the AC, traffic, people walking by, construction machines, landscaping activities etc so noisy
I like lots of people it's warmer and less intense on the social life because if you screw up there's always more people over there verses a smaller school where there wouldn't be more people there to fill up any blank spots . Small schools suck that way.
cost of housing, serious restrictions on parking, elementary over-simplified studies that lead to virtually nothing contributory to the modern workplace; insufficient preparation; 5 year out of date technology training; educators who carry a viscous streak when asked for presentation of examples of their points; 12 year old mentalities who bullshit in class (some who I wanted to throttle when they talked during a Kurosawa film).
It's in a food desert, has horrible housing and landlords, and hate crime/rape is swept under the rug. Don't forget that it's so boring you have people getting hammered on a Tuesday at 5pm. Then there's the opaque student governance, predatory administration, an uninteresting student body, and venal approach to everything. Oh, and grad students can't collectively bargain. Undergrad culture was popping in the 80s-00s, but the STEMlords and business kids lamed up the campus pretty hard, and it became a neoliberal hellscape. The concert venues here died sort of like the kids from that black mold outbreak, so RIP. If you're a vanilla-ass person looking to join the rat race of getting DoD money, UMD is perfect for you. (Sort of different story if you're a grad though, the professors are some of the most gifted and talented people I've ever met, and being advised by them would be a blessing)
As a stem major, this is what I wanted to hear. I thought this school was some shithole that people only went to so they could party, I’m happy it’s for people who actually want to do stuff with their life
I don't know if my time as a grad student here was all that worthwhile. A lot of the stuff I learned in the lab on my own at a snails pace are stuff that are well known in the trades. Getting a PhD just to learn a bunch of trade skills at a slower pace and in the end not even be qualified to work in said trades doesn't seem like a good decision retrospectively. It's a very roundabout and ironic way to learn to respect tradespeople and develop an unpopular view of the world that other people who did not go through what you did would find ridiculous. Sure I got advised, but it was done in such a way where I was given just enough information to get started, struggling and then being told that I didn't do it right or considered certain details and to do it again, and rinse and repeat, for an entirety of 6 years. I guess the pro was that I got to present and teach way more than I could have as an undergrad taking classes, but the direction of information coming in my direction from the advisor in 1 on 1 discussions is no where as organized and well prepared as a class. I mean maybe it's that all the struggle I went through will lead to a significant reward one day, and that day just hasn't come yet. But when I consider another individual I know who went to work for a big consulting firm after getting a bachelors, who is now a manager, probably has a ton of money, and married, while I'm still living like a college student in a shared house with a possible psycho, maybe if I had made different choices I would have been better off.
@@yoleeisbored it’s definitely not lol. I went there and went to other colleges as well. For a in-state/public school, it’s very affordable (like 10-12k a year I believe). It’s only crazy expensive when you’re an out of state student (think in the 30k a year just for tuition)

Maryland is one of the most over rated schools in the country. It’s a middle of the road state school that is only anything because it’s kinda close to DC.
The girl at 0:53 on the right has no idea what she's talking about. The school is amazing as hell. She's probably in a major she's not passionate about or just a little immature to really indulge herself into the depths of what this school has to offer
People are allowed to be unhappy about some parts of their school. And she’s specifically talking abt serious issues; diversity, safety etc. If you got “immature” from that, than you’re part of the problem
Worest part is all the undergrads taking up all the parking spots. Just have their parents drop them off when they go to class. No need to take up all the EV charging spots, too. And also, they need new 4K tv at the business school. Those old ass LCD hurts my eyes...
What a bunch of weak sauce people. UMD is an amazing school. Student complaining about cost?:) Try the private schools in DC, 3 times the tuition. Its public Ivy school. In engineering school, it is ranked really high, most profs graduated from MIT, what more do you want for the minor price you pay? Only negative in College Park is the crime at night. The worst part about UMD is its spending on sports while some department buildings have the ceiling falling on you in the middle of class.

thats because they spend the money on sports cause the ones making that money is the sports
