  • Louvre Abu Dhabi just opened 10 years after the project was announced in 2007. The art museum, designed by French architect Jean Nouvel, cost over £1 billion to make.
Abu Dhabi is renting the name "Louvre" for 30 years andy paid France £399 million to do so.
They also loaned 300 artworks from France, which cost £571 million. Just like Paris, the museum has a Da Vinci portrait, "La Belle Ferronniere," which is also on loan.
There are more than 620 pieces and artefacts on display including Degas, Van Gogh, Monet, and Picasso. There's also a Napoleon painting from Jacques-Louis David.
Only 235 pieces are from the museum's own collection. Loans come from 13 French museums like Pompidou, Musee d’Orsay, and Versailles.

I toured this in March. Not normally a museum person but found it an enjoyable experience. Everything is labeled in Arabic , French , and English. Building complex itself is amazing.

This is not about Abu Dhabi, but if the Louvre really want to promote arts, culture and history< I think it would have been more relevant to build a museum in a country that share a significant influnce or contributions to the world in terms of arts and culture, like for example India or China, Egypt, etc. Sorry, it really makes me think that this is just all about money, though I may be wrong.

The point is that its the only Louvre to be located outside of France. also the name is not Permanent. Its a rented name for 30 years. Also we signed a deal with France to build this Museum. We did not even build a museum using Louvre's name. Instead of judging the place the best thing to do before judging it is going to The Louvre yourself
