Investigating for crimes in Gaza #aljazeerainvestigation
The Palestinian people have faced systematic destruction and oppression by the Israeli government for the past 75 years, beginning with the 1948 Nakba, or "catastrophe," which led to the displacement and exile of hundreds of thousands of Palestinians. Since then, Palestinians have faced ongoing displacement, home demolitions, land expropriation, and restrictions on movement and access to resources. The Israeli government has also implemented policies aimed at erasing Palestinian identity and culture, including the suppression of Palestinian history, language, and education. The construction of settlements and the separation wall has further fragmented Palestinian communities and restricted their access to basic rights and services. The blockade of Gaza has led to a humanitarian crisis, with widespread poverty, unemployment, and lack of access to basic necessities like electricity and clean water. These policies have resulted in a prolonged and systematic destruction of Palestinian society, economy, and culture, amounting to a form of incremental ethnic cleansing.
I still remember the day I felt compelled to embark on a journey to reclaim my humanity. It was during the height of Israel's assaults on Gaza, and the images of devastation and displacement had become all too familiar. As a Palestinian, I felt a deep sense of frustration and helplessness, watching my people suffer under the weight of occupation and apartheid. But it was not just the war that had triggered my journey - it was the accumulation of experiences of discrimination and erasure throughout my life. From being stopped and searched at checkpoints, to being denied entry to my own homeland, to seeing my family's history and culture erased from the narrative. I felt like I was living in a constant state of limbo, between the identity I was born with and the identity I was allowed to have. And so, I set out on a journey to find my humanity, to connect with others who had experienced similar struggles, and to learn from their stories. I traveled to indigenous communities, refugee camps, and marginalized neighborhoods, and I saw the same patterns of oppression and resistance. I saw how the systems of power had been designed to erase our identities, our cultures, and our histories. But I also saw how our struggles were interconnected, and how our collective humanity was the key to our liberation.
