Shuka Vana ~ Rehabilitation Centre for Birds

  • His Holiness Sri Ganapathy Sachchidananda Swamiji's deep concern for the preservation of our environment has manifested itself in Avadhoota Datta Peetham, Mysore as Kishkindha Moolika Bonsai Garden, Ashwashala (Horse stables), Goshala (Cow shelters) and Shuka Vana (rehabilitation centre for birds).
Parrots are not just agreeable birds with their chirping sounds and attractive, vivid colors. Parrots have a specific spiritual connection with the nine planets (Navagrahas), the twelve zodiac signs (Rasis related to birth stars), the numerals of the dates in each month, and the seven musical notes Sa, Ri, Ga, Ma, Pa, Da, Ni (Saptaswaras) in Indian classical music.
With divine intuition, Sri Swamiji has identified sets of species of parrots that represent each of the above as its vibrant, living, breathing, visible presiding deity. Seeing these divine parrots and providing them nourishment, shelter, and care enhances good fortune and heightens positive energy. The parrots are related to each of us either by representing our birthdate, zodiac sign, or the planet or musical note that stimulates us.

The birds of Shuka Vana are fed four times daily. Their first meal is comprised of fresh fruits like apples, grapes and small bananas from 9am. Then they are fed a variety of fresh green leafy vegetables and other different vegetables between 12-1pm. They are then fed a mixture of different seeds. They are given at least one to two hours exercise daily and also about one hour sunlight. This daily routine contributes to a healthy and happy bird. Thank you Appji for this wonderful Rehabilitation Center.

Sri Swamiji is not collecting colorful birds for fun and games. This is a profoundly sacred plan to bring to the world noble human beings in future generations. The parrots of today at Shuka Vana are personally spiritually energized, trained and nurtured with virtuous qualities and spiritual insights so that when they are reborn as human beings shortly, they will become leaders in spirituality, various arts, various professions, and even politics. This is a mega plan that is mind-boggling, to create a bright, new, peaceful world in the future.. Jaya Guru Datta

Macaws with long-tailed, larger beaks at 3:04. Macaws are elegant, beautiful with unique color combinations and lines near eyes. What a creation...
The majority of macaws are now endangered in the wild and a few are extinct. No words to praise and thank the people behind this wonderful idea and creating this beautiful place for endangered birds and a chance for people to merge into nature.

Jaya Guru Datta. I'm proud to say that Shukavana has one of the largest collection of parrots in India. It is because of Pujya Appaji's love and compassion for these endangered birds that today, Shukavana stands majestically in the serene environment of Datta Peetham. Shukavana also has an exclusive hospital to take care of birds that are injured or birds with deformities or any other bird related problems. My humble pranams to Pujya Appaji, under whom a group of dedicated volunteers work hard to keep these magnificent birds healthy and happy.

With a glance, a word, a touch, and some delicious food prasadam - Sadguru Sri Swamiji changes the nature of thousands of devotees worldwide from impatient to patient, intolerant to tolerant, sad to happy, selfish to unselfish, greedy to generous, and ignorant to wise. He does the same thing to birds, mostly parrots, which turn friendly from scared, mild from wild, and trusting from suspicious. These birds will soon be reborn as humans, perhaps as our own children, grandchildren, or children of friends, with these decent and noble qualities acquired through Sadgurudeva's grace. What a wonderful future for the world Swamiji is creating with this amazing project called Shuka Vana! It is most incredible and divine. Jaya Guru Datta

As soon as stepping into Shuka Vana, we are reminded by the beautiful fish, that we once were swimming in the waters as they do now. At the next step, we see that we were birds with feathers and wings not too long ago, and the trees and skies were our home. The beautiful forest-like setting refreshes the mind like no other place on earth. No wonder that all rishis of yore chose to live and meditate in forests. Jaya Guru Datta

Best Bird Aviary in the world. Thw birds here are given state of the art medication and care. So many beautiful and brightly coloured birds all in one big free flight bird aviary. They are fed a balanced diet of fruits seeds and mixed nuts at different times of the day. They are taught to talk, sing and chant mantras in different languages. Most well trained birds I have ever seen.

Sukhavana is the best bird sanctuary in India and it has rare collection of wonderful species of birds. Sukhavana houses injured birds also. There are different units for Sukhavana among which one of them is Nirivana. The facilities which are provided by Appaji for the injured birds is unique and very different from the facilities that are provided by different aviaries. The dedicated team of doctors and volunteers are always on their toes and help in improving the condition of the injured birds. It is first of its kind to have rehabilitation centre in India. It is a visual treat to see Appaji personally feeding all the birds. One who enters Sukhavana will have an amazing experience of seeing free flight birds and feeding the birds is another treat. After experiencing the thrill in Sukhavana, one can go to toy shop and buy the mementos. Sukhavana is the place to be visited frequently. I thank Pujya Appaji for giving us Sukhavana, the beautiful World of Birds.

Parrots need a lot of environmental stimulation for healthy development. By placing the birds in such a natural environs (the aviary looks just like a tropical forest!), and combining it with personal care and attention from both Shuka Vana volunteers, and especially Sri Swamiji, the parrots have the best living situation possible. Shuka Vana has raised the bar for bird care around the world!

Usually when people think of India its all about dirty streets, old temples, curry and sarees. Never would one think about a rehabilitation centre for birds. What's exciting about this is that there are many tourists who visit india for nature and wildlife. This facility is in Mysore which is excellent for tourists. they can visit this facility and see so many species without the hassle of longs hikes etc. Here's a new reason to visit india...to take part in whats going to be a HUGE deal internationally. The sacredness of seeing a baby bird hatch from its egg or see and hear beautiful parrots flying overhead...such a wonderful thought

This is unquestionably a world-class facility for parrots. Natural bird habitats are maintained in this aviary. The bird enclosures are constantly cleaned while favorable temperatures are maintained throughout the year. The walkways are kept so clean, you can walk with bare feet. The walkways are paved with slabs that are congenial to walking on. The toilets are also super clean. No effort has been spared to make this the best aviary in the India.

Sri Ganapati Sachchidananda Ashram, which is one of my best known place I have ever been. For the past 25 years, I experience, watch, participate, and even get astonished by the way the projects and events occur in the presence of His Holiness Sri Ganapati Sachchidananda Swamiji and His Holiness Sri Datta Vijayananda Teetha Swamiji.
'Shuka vana', one of the biggest aviary in India shows the vision of Sri Swamiji towards the living creatures of this world, especially toward birds - parrots. One may think in a negative way about this mega structure for birds, this shows the compassion HH Sri Swamiji has towards the birds and other animals other than Humans. The compassion 'Appaji' (as we all call HH) showers on us is inexplicable. One should experience. No words to describe. Now seeing this aviary, just imagine the care HE takes on US (humans) by just looking at the care taken for Parrots and other animals.
This is an example which describes HH Sri Swamiji as a Jagadguru, who only can take care of all the creatures in this world.
May His chiocest blessings shower upon us.

Everywhere in the video motherhood is flowing. care and love is flowing. Shukavana is the expression of selfless motherly love of Sri Swamiji for the birds of Mother Earth. Shukavana
As a child, my earliest recollection of visiting Mysore Ashrama is around 1975. Going to Mysore Ashrama and running around the Ashrama was kind of liberation from the confines of the home. Among the numerous things that bombard a eight year old, I was keenly inquisitive about What Sri Swamiji does after retiring to Guru Nilayam. (The term to call Sri Swamiji as Appaji came only in 1979 and that’s a different story). What does Guru Nilayam look like? What does Sri Swamiji do inside?
Our family used to stay in room no 2 in erstwhile Rama Shankara Kuteera. It was a simple 8 feet by 10 feet room with a cupboard. Toilet & bath was a good 100 feet walk near coconut garden. On a blessed morning, at around 7 AM there was a knock on the door and when opened a smiling, Ananta Narayana, an assistant of Sri Swamiji announced “Sri Swamiji is calling Prasad to Guru Nilaya”. These words were like Amrita to my ears. My mother had readied me at 6 AM itself. Wearing a small white towel, I went with him. He took me to the back of the Guru Nilaya and opened the door and asked me to go inside. Here I was… entering the Guru Nilaya. My innermost child wish was being fulfilled. As I entered the room.. my eyes widened with bewilderment. Sri Swamiji was sitting on the floor. About a dozen pigeon birds were buzzing about him. Sri Swamiji with birds was the least of what I was expecting. Sri Swamiji was feeding green gram and corn to the birds. It was a frenzied feeding time.
This was the scene I first saw in Sri Swamiji’s Guru Nilayam. That moment is permanently etched in me.
Around 1980 Appaji constructed cement boxes for pigeons and doves to live near Datta temple. There were around ten compartments. Appaji would feed Jowar and green gram from Guru Nilayam first floor window. The pigeons would come flying for food. It was a sight to see these magnificent white pigeons and doves in flight. The strange guttural sound they made was a common back ground noise around Guru Nilaya.
While on tour to Suriname in 1995, Sri Swamiji visited the jungles of Suriname. Seeing a hunter selling a trapped bird, Appaji asked the car to be stopped and asked Dr.Sukhai to purchase the bird. Appaji later freed the bird from the cage.
While on a US tour in late 90’s Appaji visited a farm in Pennsylvania. Appaji seemed to be enchanted to see the swans in the farm lake. Shabari from Switzerland brought four swans to Mysore Ashrama and they lived in Ashrama for many years.
Appaji’s concert in Munich, Germany was titled “Hamsa Nandi Raga Sagara” it was held in the magnificent Schloss Nymphenburg. The beautiful palace is surrounded by lakes with swans. In this concert, Appaji played Raga Hamsanandi extensively. After the concert, while walking back to the car, Appaji saw a lonely swan near the path to the car. It seemed like waiting for Appaji to say - “Thanks for the Hamsanandi” Raga.
While on Antarctica tour, Appaji had a regular bird visitor to His balcony on the ship. Appaji gave it some fruits and bread daily. Appaji evinced keen interest in Penguins.
Around 2011, Appaji started to give extra interest in bird keeping in Ashrama. Some injured birds were brought to Ashrama for their care. Appaji kept these birds in the balcony of Guru Nilaya. Appaji’s personal care and attention to these avian creatures were mystical and amazing. Appaji would spend hours and hours with each bird holding them in his hands and in conversation with them.
As their numbers grew, Appaji made proper arrangements with spacious cages in the place in front of Saptarshi Sarovara. The birds received Appaji’s personal attention daily. Appaji grouped a small staff to dedicatedly care them. After some research, the birds were grouped as “Navagraha”, Rashi, 27 Nakshatra etc., A visitor to this Shukavana would attach reverence while looking at the birds. Appaji still kept a small number of birds in His Guru Nilaya. Appaji was writing a book on the birds titled “My Parrots” and was released on 20th June 2013. This photo-studded narrative delved deep in to the role played by birds in Indian Mythology. I think this is the first time anyone had dealt on birds & Indian mythology at such extent.
Appaji recorded music tunes for the 12 zodiac signs (Rashi). After some months, Appaji added birds sounds to the tracks and was released as “Birds tune Zodiac”.
Sri Swamiji got Facebook, twitter, website for Shukavana. Videos were posted on youtube.
Most discourses of Appaji would have some narrative around bird. Shukavana was getting serious attention. In many discourses, Sri Swamiji deplored tree cutting in the guise of development. Sri Swamiji was worried about the hundreds of bird families calling that tree as - Home.
Appaji’s world tours would invariably have a bird related activity. Visit to a bird park or a bird show etc. Appaji saw many beautiful bird parks in South Africa, Australia, USA, Canada, Brazil, Argentina, Germany, Malaysia, Abu Dhabi, India, Thailand, Indonesia, etc
While touring Venezuela, Sri Swamiji visited “Angel Falls” - world’s highest fall. Another fall, Hacha falls was also visited and Sri Swamiji slipped and fell in to the falls. After a few very anxious minutes, Sri Swamiji ’s ochre robes was seen on the other side of the fall and Sri Swamiji waved and disappeared behind the falls. With great difficulty, the local guide and some of us went behind the falls. The image there stunned me. Sri Swamiji was in meditation on the rocks behind the thick curtain of the Hacha fall. Hundreds of birds were circling Sri Swamiji’s head in Pradakshina. It seemed like a bird crown. After some time, Sri Swamiji woke up and was happy to be with the birds. Sri Swamiji said he was chanting Shata Shloki Ramayana when he slipped and felt being lifted on the other side. Sri Swamiji remarked “It must be Hanuman”. The Shata Shloki Ramayana video was put on vimeo and it clocked 158 million views. Imagine a spiritual video getting such grand response.
Inspired by Sri Swamiji’s bird care, hundreds of devotees started to keep birds at home.
Sri Swamiji said he felt inspired whenever he attended bird related activity anywhere. Sri Swamiji felt that the Shukavana in Ashrama needed fresh thinking and got architects to design state of the art free flight aviary in one acre of land besides Goshala in Mysore Ashrama. One of most respected and a veteran structural engineer in India , Dr.Sridhar of Bangalore designed the free flight aviary. Appaji kept on improving the design aspect. Main features of the Shukavana aviary are
    49 feet high
    1 acre space
over 70 large and spacious bird homes
Double meshing to prevent birds being attacked from outside
No support in the middle of the aviary to allow birds to have free flying
Lorikeet enclosure to allow people to feed lori birds.
Most of the birds are from parrot species
    Shuka Maharshi stone statue
    Hayacinth Macaw birds on display
    Photo with birds
Dedicated staff to care the birds.
Hundreds of workers from all religions worked on this mega project. Food, coffee tea was served daily to their tastes as they hailed from different parts of India.
This beautiful bird care facility was inaugurated on 21st September 2014 by Dr.Rajasegaran, General Manager of Jurong Bird Park, Singapore. He expressed his amazement at Sri Swamiji’s dedication to bird care.
Sri Swamiji said “Bird care is a long term commitment. Make sure you have the long term resolve to care and love the birds”. Sri Swamiji arranged a separate fund for this bird related activity and ensured that His creation of Shukavana will be taken care in perpetuity.
Seeing Sri Swamiji’s concern for Birds, many devotees have become more sensitive towards birds and bird activities. The heightened concern can only be attributed to Gurudeva’s relentless spread of “compassion for bird” message.
We will surely see more diverse bird related programs from Pujya Sri Swamiji. With this hope, Sri Guru Datta

I love to experience all the wonderful birds of Shuka Vana! The macaws and parrots are squawking away waiting on anyone to chat with. The cockatoos are only too ready to do the funny dance while the other birds keep chirping and tweeting! Hearing all this with the flow of cascading water in the background and the gentle movement of the greenery wafting in the breeze! What a pleasant environment for sick and injured birds to recuperate!

The bird enclosures are constantly cleaned while favorable temperatures are maintained throughout the year. The walkways are kept so clean, you can walk with bare feet. The walkways are paved with slabs that are congenial to walking on. The toilets are also super clean. No effort has been spared to make this the best aviary in the India

Thankfully Sri Swamiji has taken the mantle and provides them with the best care possible.
