    i think that the expedition was way to late in the year, white sharks leave massachusetts coastline through october/early november and the water there is a bit warmer than scotlands northwest coast. it would have made more sense to head out from the Devon or Cornwall coast, where there also is seal colonies.

    The real reason Great Whites aren't seen and confirmed is they swim too deep, plus the Great White feeding grounds, are covered in Orca's when it's pup season, so Great White's won't risk getting in the way of Orca's. It's perfectly possible that Great Whites are in Scottish waters, but it will be rogue or lost ones, as opposed to any groups. But given Orca's use the Scottish waters as hunting grounds, there is every chance larger sharks can as well.

    A worthwhile expedition if very optimistic. People who spend their lives at sea and are familiar with every creature in it, see a GWS once in a blue moon. If a camera were left in a hotspot for a season, and a lobster fisherman replaced the battery once a day they "might" have a chance of spotting one. I don't believe they're round Britain in the numbers to catch one on a fortnight trip, but are undoubtedly visitors to it.

    • @quit4894

      Borderlands great whites lurk extremely deep and attack their pray from below so if they do inhabit uk waters it would be extremely difficult to spot one

    • @CharlesCarabott
      @CharlesCarabott 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm from Malta and even if GWS are not found in numbers as south Africa and Australia they are certainly here. I know of many people who go out to sea occasionally and see GWS. GWS are quite visible and like to get their heads out of the water. In the nineties people saw great whites from shore too. There are also videos taken of great whites from boats. So if great whites where in British waters they would have been seen and videoed

    • @hulabiker21
      @hulabiker21 ปีที่แล้ว

      The expedition was more about checking the marine environments suitability for the GWS, compared to other areas worldwide that GWS are found. And to check any persistent signs left by GWS, such as scars on seals. They didn’t expect to see a GWS. They were also there to see what other shark species were present. All useful information, weather permitting!

    Great whites were once common in the Med, perhaps it was even a breeding ground, most if not all have been killed off, I expect there will be some that travel from US coastline to Spain/France, and similarly from Africa, along the coastline to Spain , France, Med sea. Provided the populations continue to grow, I see no reason why they could not venture into UK waters in search of prey. Perhaps there might be more chance of seeing Greenland sharks in Scottish waters, as the climate would be more suitable for them?

    • @frankhumbug
      @frankhumbug 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Russell Davis, you might be right about Greenland sharks, though I think they actually like it quite a bit colder. As for the white shark, they don't have a problem with water temperature as they have an amazing internal heating process that keeps their vital organs warm. It's about food.
      Do they follow particularly migrational paths, I don't know. Do they prefer elephant seals to grey seals, I don't know. You would think though, that a seal colony would attract predators, it possible does.

    • @CharlesCarabott
      @CharlesCarabott 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      GWS are still present in the Mediterranean as they are regularly sighted but true they have been killed and the decrease in tuna also meant that their favourite food was more difficult to find. But the tuna numbers have increased again and so probably even the great white sharks. And I heard that African refuges escaping in small boats where attacked by sharks

    • @GrilloTheFlightless
      @GrilloTheFlightless 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I’ve seen a documentary where they had a tracker placed on a Great White in Florida. The very same shark had later been tracked to South Africa and in the ocean off the south of Italy, so they definitely get about. Even in sightings in the Med are getting scarcer, the chances are that great whites from elsewhere still visit.

As said in the video; plenty of food, and the big, far-travelling predators of the oceans, like the great white, as well including orcas, will show off. At least, from time to time. I wish the SCS or other shark studying and/or documenting teams will, one day, have a chance to verify the theory. Press thumbs!

    Our seals are too quick getting onto the rocks. Big sharks rarely bother coming past Portugal. Big seals I have encountered ,800 lbs, will bite the stern of my kayak which is classic defence against sharks so the seals are not unfamiliar with the idea of hunter sharks in our water. But the vast amounts of protein they need are just not accommodating.

    • @rawdog314
      @rawdog314 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I'm not saying that I agree great whites are in British waters but your first two points are absolute bollocks,great whites are very effective ambush predators who can burst into powerful speeds to catch prey,in the Mediterranean there main diet consists of dolphins and tuna and your telling me our seals are too fast?secondly there are big sharks in the bay of Biscay and in the summer porbeagles and even makos visit our waters,big blue sharks also.
      As I said the food availability and the fact relations of great whites are already in our waters do not automatically mean great whites are here themselves and the distinct lack of evidence likely concludes there not here with any regularity or in great numbers,but the main puzzle to scientists is why there not,the great whites in this part of the Atlantic and the Mediterranean are probably the most elusive and mysterious in the world,I don't think the reason there not here is our seals are too fast 😂

    Certainly quite possible the Great White Shark occasionally enters UK waters. They travel huge distances and dont follow any rules saying they shouldnt visit an environment suitable to their requirements. ie water temperature, food source etc. The witnesses are credible. For example Skippers and fishermen who are familiar with Basking Shark, Porbeagle, Mako and also the gentleman speaking about his sighting in the video. Very good program, thanks for posting.

    • @dougieroberts7045
      @dougieroberts7045 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You are wrong, in fact, you couldn't be more wrong. They have a well documented route of travel, scientifically proven by those who study them by tagging them.
      You say they 'Don't follow any rules', again, you couldn't be more wrong, they clearly have lots of rules regarding their whereabouts, the reality is that humans don't understand those habits and automatically assume their behaviour is somehow within the constraints of what humans think it should be, you really couldn't be more wrong.
      Water temperature and food sources are what we immediately conclude are the main criteria, again, definitely not, we aren't sharks, its highly likely that conditions such as ocean bed terrain, oxygen content, tidal flow, current are far more important to such complicated animals.
      Credible witnesses. Even qualified specialists get it wrong. These are people who have spent their lives studying these animals, they are highly paid professionals. They aren't fisherman, skippers of boats who have zero experience in identifying Great White Sharks.
      Just about everything said in this video contradicts Great White Shark behaviour.
      To conclude. Its exactly this type of nonsense misinformation that causes problems.

    There are great whites in the Med, the North Atlantic, and off the African coast.
    They would have to be deliberately avoiding the UK to not be found there.
    As with ALL cases, it is based on the number of people in the water, and Britain has very few people entering it's waters compared to places with more shark sightings.
    If we had as many people in th water as Australia we would have a comparable number of sightings and attacks.

    Great White Shark populations are still unknown but, with the rise in seal & sea lion populations worldwide, as well as global warming & the rise in sea levels, it wouldn't be surprising to find Great White Sharks turning up in places where they've frequently been unseen for many, many years when penniped populations were wiped out. Such as the case on the east coast of the U.S. where Great White's are now being seen regularly & in numbers. It would make sense they'd again be seen near the coast of the U.K., as they're warm blooded & hunt their prey in almost every ocean & sea on the planet.

    Great white sharks are in the Atlantic Ocean!!! yeah for sure!! Generally speaking it's pretty rare they spend much time in that area though, at least from what we know. But as a surfer from the east coast of the US.... I remember a time when a great white sighting was extremely rare here on the shores of Massachusetts? Now a days you hear about it happening every summer. So far no one seems to have any idea why that is but it's not gonna stop me from enjoying a good surf that's for sure.

    There is no doubt with the warming of waters around the world you will have the occasional unwanted visitor. In Australia where this is nothing uncommon, we are seeing big changes in a lot of shark species habits. The worst being a record time of shark attacks close in shore. Their patterns habits are definitely changing here. They travel vast distances and certainly have been satalite tagged swimming from Australia to Africa and back. They come home to mumma! 😀

    • @mrianwonder6527
      @mrianwonder6527 ปีที่แล้ว

      No.
      You just have more people going into the water, NOT a change in shark behaviour.
      Your government doesn't want to limit or damage beach tourism and have tried to misrepresent the situation.

    Great whites sometimes travel from USA or Africa once and a while to come visit us brits, and hey we have a large amount of seals here, so its not really a suprise....and I'm also australian and I've encountered 3 in the 6 years I lived there... 0-6 and hey...I fucking love sharks

    • @cliffcampbell8827
      @cliffcampbell8827 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Great white sharks are warm blooded and don't care that much about water temperature as long as they have plenty of fatty food to chomp on.

  • @CunningStuntsGoFast
    @CunningStuntsGoFast 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    what i dont understand is how come they arent in uk waters and get spot regulary . i mean the watertemp is right the surroundings are right and there is food for them . they are seen anywhere where the factors are right except for britain ?

    • @dougieroberts7045
      @dougieroberts7045 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Theres lots of places in the world where Great White Sharks aren't found, most of them for closer to where they are found than GB and most of the places far more suitable working on a criteria that we think is suitable for Great White Sharks. The reality is very different. The top marine biologists in the world know very little about Great White Sharks.
      We base our criteria on what we think is ideal for Great White Sharks, which is a recipe for disaster given we know so little about them.
      We don't have a clue what Great White Sharks seek regarding habitat, we just assume its water temperature, depth of the water, food supply and again, the reality is likely completely diffferent and that is the reason we have never had Great Whites in our waters and most likely never will.
