Classical Piano players are trained from the begging to approach music systematically--- this means they have a lot of practice sight reading and recognizing patterns in the music they learn, but what about improvising? Will those skills lend to both sides of the equation??

I was also classically trained since I was 8, I have the exact same fear in improvising!lack of security when I don’t have a music sheet in front of me and it’s scary not knowing where my fingers should go next! This video is definitely helpful for me ...... thanks !
Wow Vayda to me as someone with almost not skill as of yet, I kinda find it difficult to understand. Classical music is extremely difficult to play and wrap my head around, I would have thought someone like you would have found it a piece of cake. Still I think I’d rather be in your shoes because I just love to listen to classical piano music. It is ultra relaxing 😌. My question is do you think it would be easy for the inverse, someone great at piano but not classically trained to do what you do?

As a classically trained pianist who began playing piano at a very young age by ear, this is exactly what I've been looking for. I mostly sight-read, but would prefer to have the freedom to just play. Your videos are superb!
Amazing.... This is EXACTLY my situation. I'm a classical pianist! I was classically trained at the age of 5. My instructors only taught me theory related to classical theory. I tried to learn pop music/improvisation but was always told not to mix the two by my instructors! I wanted to play in the jazz band and rock band in high school but my improvisation skills was lacking and therefore I never pursued either. I hope this video will change this at 60... I was at the church today running a sound check for Sunday (new mixing board). It came time to test the steinway mics, the music director wasn't there, so it was up to me and I had no sheet music in front of me. So I just banged out a 1-4-5 pattern on the left and a little melody that came to mind (which I know how to do from watching this channel) and it was the first time I'd played anything in front of people. Their only comment - Can you play louder please? No need to be nervous.
That is so good to hear! We have a story like that on this week's podcast with Erskine Hawkins (who's played with Eminem and Rihanna among other very big names!) I love it when the crowd is eager to hear more :)

Another outstanding tutorial. A gifted teacher has the ability of being able to teach theoretical principles, so simply, that various skill levels can absorb the lessons. We appreciate you!.
I would love to see improvisation being revived in Classical music. Would be fun to see concert pianist improvising their own prelude as warmup before playing bigger pieces. Charmaine did great! Some tips I'd give is to use a motif and mold it around the chords you choose. The motif doesn't have to be complicated, a simple interval with unique rhythm usually suffice. Another tips would be to practice voice leading to smoothen the chord movement. Best of luck to anyone trying this out!
I've been trying to practice my improvisation but have only played from sheet music. I just LOVE how the melodies and patterns Charmaine comes up with are so familiar to the things I'm doing. It makes it feel less daunting that I'm not yet at the point where I can do crazy things with cord patterns. Thanks for the video!

WOW! This video inspired me so much!!! I didn't know you can make pretty music with with just chords, inversions, and broken chords!😮😮😮 I thought you needed to know more stuff! At this point, I'm pretty solid on my chords, just need more practice with the sharps and flats. But now I'm starting to dip my feet into learning inversions, but have kind of been slacking a bit in the past week not putting in my usual practice time because I'm not enjoying learning practicing inversions so much lol 😂 this is exactly the video I needed to watch to get me fired up again and motivated! Going to get back to practicing my inversions! I'm excited!😃😃😃

I thrive off of this concept when I first started learning from you. And I have found patterns that really feel great and sound great. Only problem is, that my fingers by instinct go to C minor scale and play the same variation of the same tune every time and it's a nightmare to break out of it lol.

Ok, this was very helpful, someone actually taking the time to break it down and explain, stepwise! My fellow classically-trained pianists, how many of you can relate? I had stopped asking people to show me how to improvise, because I got tired of the explanation, “I don’t know, you just do it, you just play whatever you want” followed by them playing something incomprehensibly amazing then saying, “See?” 😐

I completely vibe with what is said about not having notes on a page and feeling very unsafe and unsure of myself. Improvising and "working without a net" is something I am working on now more than I ever have.

This is a key difference between jazz and classical training. From early on jazz musicians are learning scales and arpeggios not only to increase their facility in playing them when written in a score, but also to learn what chords they sound good over. A jazz musician has no fear of not having written music. As long as they can hear the chords, they can play on top of them. Some players better than others of course. 🤓
Most were classically trained to begin with.
Classically trained pianists are taught exactly the same thing. But the culture of classical music is that one should remain true to the intention of a composer. If one puts too much of himself into a piece of music, you risk criticism. They have the ability to do it but they are simply taught to stay clear of it.
Classical musicians can all improvise and it is only a psychological barrier that prevents them from doing it comfortably.

This was awesome to watch. I'm also classically trained but from playing in church and with a band, I've learned to improvise by using knowledge of diatonic harmony (huge music theory nerd). Not too hard...can't say the same about Chopin's Fantasie Impromptu though!! Hope to remedy that in the future. :)
Hey a good trick for Chopin is coloring the chords in the left hand that are the same! That way it really just becomes so much easier for your brain.
Exactly I'm the same way! I can play some piano bc I know music theory, I'm learning more. But I'm a guitar/bass player, & drummer. I've been drumming in church since I was a kid but only started bass in church this year. Although Ive played the strings for almost 20 years I was so scared to start in church. We have 2 drummers & had no bass or guitar players so I forced myself to switch. Glad I did! With help from God I'm rocking now. But the main problem was the other guys play by ear only & don't know any music theory, so I get like zero help from them. Ive had to learn to play just by ear, which was new to me, but knowing the fret board, notes & scales has been whats saved me. Now I'm improvising, doing leads & some solos. Never thought I'd enjoy it more than drumming, since that was my first love but I totally DO! So so glad I stepped out of my comfort zone! One day I hope to be there with piano too. Anyone else reading this I encourage you to try new things, step out of your comfort zone! Who cares if you mess up a little, you're still doing better than anyone else just sitting on their hands. No one gets better without messing up some! Dont be scared. Imagine how bad I was at 11 years old playing drums with VERY little training & no help from anyone 😖😖 thank God I made it through that & never gave up. Whatever it is don't give up, believe in yourself, keep practicing & never be afraid to make a mistake or two! Lots of times no one will even notice but you! God bless you, I love you all.🙏❤

Take the chord progressions right out of the C# minor Fantasy Impromptu as a basis to improvise upon and follow his baseline while improvising over the chord structures. Then transpose to several keys. The Prelude in C can be practiced in all 12 keys and improvise on the chords as well. As in I iim7 V6/5 and so on.

I noticed that she did an octave, but it doesn't look like she has large hands. There are several Chopin pieces that require tenths. Does she use a smaller keyboard? Have you done a video on those keyboards?
My daughter took classical music lessons for 12 years but can’t play a song using lead sheet.

Same. I'm a noob but i love improvising. Doesn't always sound good, but it's so enjoyable and freeing. And you really feel the music when you improvise. I love it. (Although i need to expand my knowledge on scales and rythm to be able to improvise more stuff)

Wow, I can’t understand this fear. All I do is improvise! I very rarely play a piece that has been composed. I find it far too restricted and controlled. It is so funny to se such a talented person so scared to just play.

It's how some of us were taught. You had to follow the sheet music and strict theory.
@@RiversRun597 I was also trained for violin and guitar but I have always improvised. I thought it was just part of playing an instrument. I understand that I was not the most diligent student but I also try to write music, so I guess that is why I have always improvised and not really thought about it too much. It is always interesting to find out how others approach things though. :)
It's a result of restrictive teaching. I had my natural ability to play by ear 'taught' out of me and often wish I had never had formal lessons.

the well tempered clavier was meant as a practice to learn for Bach students. so i think it should be treated as such to learn chords/arpeggios etc. you just simply play the same shapes in different octaves. great lesson here.

I totally understand her pain. As a percussionist (mostly kit) we could sometimes have 8/12 bars for 'improvisation' ... just tell me what you need me to play goddammit lol 🤣

Remember there is a tune that Gounod fit over this called Ave Maria. How about showing her a lead sheet or what is called a fake book with just the chords to flesh out and the tune. Plenty of standard songs that can used as the basis of improvisation.
is the opposite for me whenever someone gives me a sheet to read i would freak out cuz idk how to read sheet music i mostly do it by ear cuz is more comfortable
I learned piano since I was a child, Im a church organist but in applying as piano teacher, I failed on an improvisation exam, so sad😢

Didn't realize there was different types of pianist. I always assumed all pianist could most likely improvise.
All probably have the ability to, but going from having a piece of sheet music telling you where to place your fingers at every second of a song to having no boundaries or rules at all can be overwhelming to think about.
Sadly not.
I can ONLY improv classically, I cant seem to play anyone elses work unless I've listened to it over and over and find the sound naturally

Why not take the progressions in the C# minor Impromptu and use them to improvise. Chopin was a great admirer of Bach and they both were improvisers. Transpose the Bach Prelude 8n all 12 keys and improvise over those chords as well. Not knowing what comes next is not a problem as you can surprise yourself by being totally open to creating something spontaneously. Classical pianists should know how to improvise and they have the facility to do that. Just jump on there and try things and you will be rewarded.

News flash, YOU DONT COPY OTHER PEOPLES ART WORK. SOUND IS THE MOST POWERFUL ENERGY IN PHYSICS.
The whole business about classical musicians not being able to improvise is purely a case of the culture of classical music changing to de-emphasize it. They all have the skill to do it but are taught to stick to the score.
Consider the fact that before the 20th century virtually every great classical pianist was renowned for improvising. Mozart, Beethoven, Chopin, Liszt. The ability to compose extemporaneously was considered a standard skill one needed to be a complete musician. Why this ended is a separate question but I can assure you it has nothing to do with diminishing skill.
