Justin Hayward joined the Moody Blues in 1967 and is the composer and lead singer of this song. He only left the Moody Blues when they disbanded in 2022 due to the death of their drummer Graham Edge. Apart from the years 1972-1978, the group existed from 1962-2022. They were friends with The Beatles, Stones, and The Who. First hit the charts in 1964 with”Go Now” . Justin ans John are still touring as solo acts and playing Moodies songs.
There is a great version of this recorded at the Royal Albert Hall, with a full orchestra. Awesome.
You really must hear the original recording. It has an ethereal quality and is part of the reason why I've loved music all my life. The Moody Blues have a huge catalog, so chances are you've heard Justin's voice at some point. I recommend "Tuesday Afternoon", "The Actor", "The Voice", "Gemini Dream" and "Are You Sitting Comfortably."
Omg...clicked on this as soon as I got the notification...a song of my teenage years...oh so long ago, thanks so much for the memories...
This song came out in 1967. The album is "Days of Future Past" which, along with "Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" by the Beatles, are often cited as the beginnings of Prog rock. The Moodies toured for many decades and only recently stopped after the drummer Graham Edge passed in 2021. Masters of, and one of the originators of, the 'Concept"album.
Their live concert at Royal Albert Hall is my favorite.
Singer/guitarist Justin Hayward wrote this when he was 19 years old.
This song is iconic as are The Moody Blues! The lead singer sounds as good in this as he did in the original. Give it a listen and you will see what I mean. Love your reaction!
They are mostly considered Progressive Rock. This song appeared originally in one, if not the first rock concept album in 1967. One interesting note about this version of the band is that all five members wrote the songs on their albums and four of them traded lead vocals. Other than the Beatles, it is hard to find other bands so gifted. They are also one of the few bands to have chart hits spanning three decades. You should absolutely dig more into their catalogue!
You should def listen to the original album version. I think there may be a shorter radio friendly version also. Oh yes. Perfection. I classify them as classic rock, but today there are so many sub genres of rock that I'm flabbergasted. 🙃
This video was from the Moody Blues induction ceremony (finally) into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on 4/14/2018 at 11:40pm. The Cars, Bon Jovi, Dire Straits, Nina Simone, and Sister Rosetta Tharpe were all inducted before them that evening so they were understandably tired. They still rose to the occasion and performed wonderfully. Other songs to check out, Ride My See Saw, The Voice, Tuesday Afternoon, Gemini Dream, Singer In A Rock and Roll Band, Your Wildest Dreams are just some. They've been touring for years as a band and only stopped recently upon the passing of Graeme Edge in 2021, the drummer and last original member. Justin Hayward and John Lodge, who joined in 1966, are still touring separately to date.
This album is a must, start to finish is a fantastic journey.
I have seen this band live over 50 times, in the 80s to the early 2000s. This video was not a great representation of how powerful Justins voice is, or was, but its very hard to find the addition of the Late Lament (spoken word content). Glad you enjoyed them, it is a deep well! They were ground breaking in several ways back in the 60s!
Thank you very much. Your enthusiasm is contagious. I loved this song as a teenager in the 60’s.
They INVENTED the genre of Progressive Rock with the album “Days of Future Past” in 1967 and paved the way for Pink Floyd, Yes, King Crimson, and Emerson Lake and Palmer. They mixed Rock and Classical.
Justin Hayward was the lead vocalist. I haven't seen this version. There is another live version that I have seen. Oh, and he's a knight (OBE). They were inducted in 2017.
Oh, and this whole album is great. Tuesday Afternoon. Genre is (English) Progressive Rock, along the lines of Yes.
Absolutely beautiful song… never ever get bored of hearing it .. all time classic ❤
PBS Moody Blues at Red Rock is a must watch.
They have 5 main albums, and a couple in the 90's. Their first hit was in 1965, so NOT a 70s band 🤯
Amazed that he can still get to those notes.
A sad echo of his young voice. but still, so sweet and moving .
This progressive rock song was originally performed with a full orchestra. Now that is the version you need to download.
Haven't heard this in a long time. Love this so much
The moody blues are fantastic.they don’t have just one singer but Justin Haywood is the singer songwriter for this one
my first concert! 1971
Def need to hear the original
....where have you lived all the years???.... Never Heard???????......
❤better lately than never......🤘👍
Justin is the lead singer. My father named me after him. Growing up in an Italian family (mother’s side) my Grandfather was furious. No J in the Italian alphabet. So he called me Ustin
The lead singer, Justin Hayward, wrote the song when he was 19 and "...was at the end of one big love affair...". 1967, the summer of love, was a good year.
First introduced to Justin Haywood and John Lodge as the Blue Jays. A auto shipped record my friend didn't want. I played that album over and over. I think I still have it.
Not sure how to define them. Their songs we're not typical.
👍👍Awesome song. Was my wife's favorite band. 🖖❤
It's amazing just how this iconic group & equally iconic song has stood the test of time. The 60's album version with the spoken elements is an absolute masterpiece. There's a slightly earlier version where they performed live at The Royal Albert Hall with full orchestra that is truly awe inspiring with a brilliant orchestral climax worthy of the ticket price on it's own and most definitely well worth your attention. Thank you for reviewing an amazing memory from my early youth.
Tuesday afternoon by this band is also good.
Good old time to be young.
I sing this song to my three kids
Definitely listen to the original. This was pretty much the theme to my high school years from 71-75. However, I knew of no other song by the group and considered them a 'one hit wonder'.
Listen to them in the sixties.
Symphonic Rock.
You have to listen to the original and there’s also another live performance with an orchestra that I enjoy more -you should listen to the whole album which is a concept album - love the Moody Blues
Oh no you need to hear the original
❤️🔥U2Timi
The original has Ray Thomas, who had passed by the time of the HOF induction, on flute and Mike Pinder on Melotron. That version, and the live at the Royal Albert Hall versions are even better than this. Both have Orchestra backing. I highly recommend you listen to those versions. And yes, the group has more our let been together since 1964 or 65.
for some reason every time I heard the title of this song I thought it was knights in white satin instead of nights even though that makes no sense⚛
That's the problem with the internet, this isn't the best live version of this song. There's another one with a full orchestra most reactors have been using. This one doesn't even have the ending.
1967 , with a few re-releases .
I'm not sure if you'd be interested in a Japanese band. If so than please check out Togenashi Togeari. Eather of there songs Wrong World or Bleeding Hearts would be a great listen. And yes both are part of the sound track of the Girls Band Cry anime.
Love this song. I loved it since 1967. There are better recordings of this song.
Im British and didnt even hear wtf was said at the beginning in that poem.
Need a reaction to 2Pac, Outlawz & The Dogg Pound - Initiated
Knights IN White Satin. Not OF White Satin.
No, it "N"ights in White Satin. The song is a composite of two love affairs. The first fleeting, but the girl bought him a set of satin sheets (which he said was very impractical at the time) and the second much more involved, but ended devastatingly.
Excuses me Sir. Samson. Samson has dropped 3 new tracks. Check them out. You won't be disappointed
Please react to new video from Alffy Rev
The Guardian of Nusantara
Amazing 👍 ❤️ 🇮🇩
Nights in White Satin NOT The Knights of White Satin !!!!!
Please find another version of this song. This is nothing close to the original.
His voice in this performance is not at its best. Definitely listen to the studio version. Justin Hayward has one of the greatest voices in modern music (don't want to just say rock because the Moody Blues can't be relegated to any one genre), and all of their lyrics are philosophical and spiritual. They have 7 albums (the "Core 7") that are all worth listening to, this song being from the first. Another great song for his vocals is Question, one of their biggest hit singles from 1970.
Real music! Not music about T&A and twerking.
This is not a great representation of this song..
not an "instant classic". It's been a classic since 1967.
I'm sorry to be an old soggy blanket, but that version was one of my least favorite of their live performances. You have to watch the one in the Royal Albert Hall - soooo much better.
Live version performance at Royal Albert Hall is wonderful version...better than this
one.
Don't add this version to your playlist. This is the worst version I have heard.
Not as good live compared to the original 1967 album version😮😊Just saying
Seriously? Instant classic? You must be trolling.
Didn't like this version at all! Original is sooo much bettet.
He can barely sing it. He's getting older.
