Fun fact: That poster of Rita Hayworth was the single highest selling piece of wall art in history. It was not only all over the US, it was the favorite among military men during WW2. It was only supplanted in the 70's, when the famous poster of Farrah Fawcett took its place. You can find that one by googling "Farah Fawcett poster". It's the one where she's wearing the red spaghetti-strap top. EVERY poster shop in the 70's had that one selling regularly for years. If Andy had still been in jail then, it would have replaced Raquel Welch's fur bikini pic.

32:17 Now consider this shot for just a moment.
We see the surprise on Warden Norton's face. Of course, that's no surprise. Warden Norton is the main party Andy was trying to keep this hidden from.
We see the surprise on Captain Hadley's face. Of course, that's no surprise, _either._ If Captain Hadley had found out, Warden _Norton_ probably would've found out, so of course, Andy had to keep it from _both_ of them.
But consider Red. Consider how surprised _he_ looks. He's the first guy in the prison Andy introduced himself to, about 19 years before this point. He's the guy who got Andy the rock hammer in the first place. By this point in the movie, it seems safe to say that Andy has no better friend in the world than _him._
But we're looking at an _accumulated_ result, here. We're looking at something Andy would have to have been working on since about the time he got the hammer. He's been working on it and working on it and working on it, good times and bad. How come Red didn't know about it?
Because Andy observed a key rule when it comes to keeping a secret. He _kept_ it. As the old saying goes, "Three people can keep a secret if two of them are dead." He was not in a position to benefit from Red knowing, so Red did not know, no matter _how_ much Andy wanted to share it with someone.

  • @lazyperfectionist1
    @lazyperfectionist1 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

6:11 "Hadley busted his head up pretty good."
Now _this_ part, thankfully, has changed. That man died because he was taken to the infirmary at _night,_ in 1947, at a time when the prison physician was a position seen as basically just an _office_ job that you could do for eight hours a day, 40 hours a week, and then just go home. Because he was taken there at night, there were no medical personnel on duty, and he was left to just deteriorate until morning when the physician came in.
Nowadays, there are regulations entitling all offenders to round-the-clock medical care. Every prison has medical personnel on duty, 24-7.

Here’s a suggestion so you will be possibly the only person reacting to this particular movie.
The movie is the Well from 1951. As far as I know is not based on any true events, but it is definitely heartwarming.
I originally watched it on DVD and then re-watched it with the commentary on which made me appreciate the movie even more. That is one thing that you don’t get with streaming.
When I first watched it on DVD, it was not on TH-cam, but it is now. If you can ever find it on DVD, watch it with the commentary on.

I hope every generation of movie-fans get to enjoy 10-15 great films in their lifetime... plus, all those from previous generations, too. I think SHAWSHANK will be one of the contemporary films that can 'live on and on' for decades or more. I'm not sure FORREST GUMP will because there are so many time-centric scenes and 'skits' that will be lost on viewers in 20-30 years...certainly in 50 years, there won't be an awareness of Coach 'Bear' Bryant's insertion... or a muddy T-shirt's smiley face... the LBJ/Nixon/Watergate scenes... so many of those are lost even now. But SHAWSHANK's 'historical tale scenes' are well-explained.

I looked to see who the author was, and was shocked to see is was Stephen King. I don't like horror, so I'd never read anything of his. However despite thinking he’s teaching Andy, he’s being manipulated - just as the guards, Tommy, and the warden were - over YEARS of lies by a cool-headed, emotionless psychopath. A master chess player and manipulated… carefully crafting his pieces. Sure the warden took kickbacks… but it was Andy who came up with all the money laundering and scheming which brought him down. Andy most likely killed Red within a few months of his arrival - if he no longer served a useful purpose.

17:18 "Or he's just been there so long, y'all are his family."
That's part of it. But consider his situation overall.
The very ending of this movie is happy, but a _lot_ of tragic things have to happen to get you to that point, and I would dare to say that none of the tragedies are greater than what happens to Brooks. See, he was first convicted in 1905. He was 23 and fresh from college. He would shortly go on to be one of the few prison inmates with a college degree, and this put him on course to become the prison librarian.
Before being locked up, he had seen _one_ single car, which must've been an incredible _novelty_ to him. It seems safe to assume that car was _not_ used to transport him to the prison.
He was taken from a world with no highways, no automotive traffic, no electronic wiring, precious little internal plumbing, gas-powered lanterns, no radio or TV transmissions and no telephones. While he was locked up, both world wars, the Great Depression and the Dust Bowl period happened. Indeed, you could even say the nation was fresh out of the _Korean_ War, though the impact from that wasn't felt as much. Most roads in the world were dirt. Those that were paved were paved with cobblestones.
He was released into a world in which cars were all _over_ the place that were _completely_ different from the one he had seen. He was released into a world in which the average American had a radio, a TV, a telephone and indoor plumbing in their _home._
Suffice it to say, the world into which he was released was _profoundly_ different from the one from which he had been taken, so it didn't really feel like a release. He wasn't really going home. His home was gone.

I always, always start crying when Brooks takes his own life. As I get closer to the end, I understand more and more what he was feeling, and why he did it. Being alone like that can be too hard to bear.
By the way, the original Stephen King story does end on Red's words, "I hope." There's no confirmation that they ever found each other, and the script ended that way, too, but the director felt it couldn't end like that because the audience would feel cheated. So they tacked on that little reunion scene. But I think they should have gone with the original ending; it would have been more poignant, and more true to the spirit of the film. Still though, it's a fantastic film. (Also, that line "Maybe it's because I'm Irish", is true to King's story. There, Red really is a big beefy Irish guy with red hair. When it came time to cast the film, however, they went with the best actor they could find, reasoning that looks didn't matter. What mattered was the quality of the performance, and they couldn't get better than Morgan Freeman.)

One thing this movie has taught me about myself is that, growing up, I didn't really get a total sense of what makes someone a good friend, like with Andy and Red. A lot is said and done in society to romanticize the act of "finding true love," so much so that we tend to lose sight of the value of sincere friendship, but the fact is a healthy, well-adjusted human being is born from the _latter._ You've got to have sincere _friends_ before you can have true _love._

3:26 I want to point out something that's happening in this scene, because it becomes evident, later in the movie, when it becomes relevant. Here, Andy Dufresne observes the character of Warden Norton and Captain Hadley and determines, "These men do _not_ have my best interests at heart. They are here to do whatever they can to make _money_ from me; not to facilitate my reform. It is, therefore, in my best interests to escape."

7:36 "Why do they call you that?"
    "Maybe it's because I'm Irish."
Because the _character_ is Irish; quite _glaringly_ Irish. Ghost-white pale with a shock of red hair. So Morgan Freeman, being quite glaringly _not_ Irish, is kind of an odd choice. I mean, he's not Irish at all. Neither of his _parents_ are Irish. It would not surprise to discover that he has not had a single Irish ancestor in the last 900 _generations._
But he also happens to be an absolute _chameleon_ of an actor. When he says, "I'm Irish," absolutely _no part_ of you feels compelled to dispute something that's obviously not true.

Great reaction. & you'll find most people break down a few times during this Masterpiece. One of my favourite little tiny detail is that Andy doesn't just break the warden & ruin his life. He DESTROYS him on several levels. Takes Everything from him. Ruins his whole world. Makes his legacy of his inside out program into nothing but a crime. But with a Beautiful little twist of the dagger on top. Let me elaborate.
You've seen what a religious zealot the warden is. Yes he has broken the 10 commandments more than a few times. But those sins are things someone can be redeemed from. If the warden had accepted his sins & gone to prison, he could've ended up in heaven after redemption by admitting his sins. But he doesn't. He offs himself. That's something in the bible that sends you straight to Hell. Andy doesn't just tear down the wardens world, he destroys & makes him lose his most treasured "good trait". His faith. Andy breaks him mind, body & soul.

Fun fact: Morgan's son was the one doing the reeling motion and is also the one in Morgan's mugshot.
Fun Fact 2: Morgan's character, Red.. is actually an Irish man in the story. But they liked Morgan a lot so they chose him to play Red. That is why Morgan said "maybe its because I'm Irish".

Hope and salvation are the underlying themes of the Shawshank Redemption, and, of course, the Bible is the ultimate source of hope and salvation for all men, which is why the Holy Bible is a another recurring theme throughout the movie. (It is no accident that Andy conceals the rock hammer, which is the instrument by which he achieves his escape and wins his freedom, within the pages of Exodus.) By the way, the redemption is Red’s, not Andy’s. It is Red - the only guilty man in Shawshank - who has lost his hope and faith in mankind during his long years of imprisonment, and in whom hope needs to be rekindled.

The thing I love about this movie is that black and white people both love it and they both empathize with Red and Andy, equally. I've seen videos of black dudes marking out over Andy's ingenious escape and I've seen videos of white people crying when Red finally gets approved for parole. This is a movie that I believe truly bridges the divide between races.

in regards to red's last parole hearing, it's more likely that he was just old enough more than honest enough. while using the imdb list to pick films is great, don't limit yourself. there are soooo many films, mostly independent small films, that tell stories you will want to see but probably made very little money at the box office. heck, even the shawshank redemption was a bomb at the theater... who would watch at film that's just guys in a prison over a span of 2+ decades? the rewards are greater when it's NOT a hollywood movie.

Definitely a tear jerker, your in good company, no apologies necessary. Hearing your thoughts afterwards reminded me that the original ending of Shawshank did not show them reuniting on the beach. I believe it ended at Red's "I hope" line on the bus. But, after the producers screened the film for some test audiences (who generally wanted to see them back together), they went back and changed it. Just wanted to share that with you.
