I never thought their love story would be something I could relate to, but it is. My Mom died a year ago, and she was supposed to grow old with my dad. They were supposed to grow old together.
I think the creator wanted to keep their love story as a perfect one, hence when Patrick Dempsey decided to leave the show, Derek had to die. If the made Derek leave the family, in hoping that one day Dempsey would return to the series, these two wouldn't be a perfect couple. At least, that is what I like to think
