    Your so right. Darkness is subjective. I also agree that balancing darker themes with the romance takes a deft hand. Love this video.

  • @jl85_16
    @jl85_16 2 ปีที่แล้ว +13

    Jess I am so with you when you said you don’t like the “darkness” to be between the main characters. I’m the exact same way. I can do super dark as long as the dark is by external forces. If the MMC is beating or raping the FMC I’ll never be able to buy into their romance no matter what happens after.

    The second book in the Deliver series is actually one of my favorite books of Pam's because of how she redeems the hero. But I can definitely see that not working for everyone. She is an incredibly talented writer. I can't get enough of her books!

    The MindF series was my first dark romance and I loved it. But I do not enjoying reading on page SA so that’s a huge TW for me. Which prevents me from reading dark romance lol. But I think I’ll try Still Beating!

      I love dark romance but I’m the same! I don’t like reading SA and actively try to avoid it…. That being said I loved still beating! I think that author wrote it so well 😊

    Keri Lake writes some of my favourite dark romances I highly recommend checking out her Juniper Unraveling and Vigilantes series both delivering in creating romance while mixing in some very dark themes. Both series are intense but completely unputdownable! She really knows how to build a story and make you care about the characters and their relationships
    I've read a lot of dark romances and ones that I distinctly remember pushing me too far out of my comfort zone was Take me with you by Nina G. Jones I couldn't even get past a few chapters after learning the hero was a rapist and murderer. Also, years ago I read the Deception series by Ker Dukey and D.H Sidebottom and from what I remember I would hesitate to call it a romance but I thought it would get better and then it only got worse

  • @katiemitchell6064
    @katiemitchell6064 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I totally agree that "darkness" is subjective. Thanks for sharing this list! it's really interesting to hear your perspective on dark romance that you really enjoyed and others that you didn't. I feel like we don't hear enough about when dark romance doesn't quite live up to what we like/expected.

    Enthralled and Enamored was good but very dark. I want to read still besting but I don’t kind if I’m ready to. I’ve read a lot of K Webster books and I would recommend whispers and roars.

    Court of ravens is probably the darkest romance duet I’ve ever read. Even more so than the cat and mouse duet.

  • @komalshah3673
    @komalshah3673 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    These are really good ones. Darkness is however you see it. Everyone has different tastes and agree you don't want it to be SOO overwhelmingly dark that it overshadows the romance. I reallly want to get to Sea of Ruin. Its on my TBR. For me Darkest read has been really anything by pepper Winters. My recommendation would be to read Truth and Consequences series by Aleatha Romig. Its one of my favs and I often go back to re-read that series.

    I tend to avoid dark romance, though I have to quickly say that's me and no judgement at all for readers who enjoy this trope. I'm the same with movies and television series.
    That's why I was shocked when it turned out I loved It Ain't You Babe by Tillie Cole. In fact I loved it so much I went on and read the rest of the series. When I started reading it, it was not at all what I was expecting. For some reason I thought it would be much lighter.

    • @beccabunny123
      @beccabunny123 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That’s what I commented already!! Those books are SO DARK. But I loved all of them. I think Lyla and Flame’s books were probably the darkest. Both went through horrific things and tillie cole is hella graphic

    Also make a compilation on secret baby romance / herione forced to be with hero after the baby revelation/ bossy possessive alpha hero who is sweet at the core/ forced proximity
    P.S: I hope you understand the genre 😅🤣 because I do luv it but don't knw how to put the tag on that genre.

  • @beccabunny123
    @beccabunny123 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I agree with all of these! I would definitely add “it ain’t me babe” by tillie cole on there, as well as the other books in that series. It was super hard to read through the graphic assault scenes, but I couldn’t put them down. They are all very dark and twisted. Pretty much the overall outcome of a sex cult. 10/10 recommend Tillie cole in general, but especially these books if you enjoy a dark dark romance.

    3 years ago, I read Born to be Bound by Addison Cain. It was my first dark-romance book, and I thought it was pretty taboo because the FMC fell in love with a man who would rape her every time he didn't like something she said and wanted her to shut up, and he kept her locked up and wouldn't let her go out and see the sunlight. I now see that book is tame compared to books like Sick Fuxx

    I read Raphael for the book club and i really didn't remember anything.I checked my goodreads to see that i gave it one star so that explains it. But after reading the plot on goodreads i now remember the general idea. Also Jess you say that this wasn't for you but you gave if 4 stars on goodreads. How many stars do you give the ones you like?

    • @PeaceLoveBooksxo
      @PeaceLoveBooksxo  2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I like Tillie Cole too but sick fux is just not something I want to put my brain and heart through… Still Beating though, it was aaamazing and the thing with my personal taste is that, yes it can be dark as long as there is a very strong romantic component to the story.

    I totally understand not wanting to read the second book in the Deliver Us series. I highly recommend skipping it and reading Disclaim first, the third in the series. Personally, I never went back to read the second one after Disclaim but Disclaim shows him reformed and in a better light so might be easier to read the second book after that. But Disclaim is my favorite of the whole series and one of my favorite dark romances. It's so good!! Don't miss it just cuz the second book kinda sucks!!

    Sick Fux was a DNF for me. I wanted to love it so bad, and I understand the author did it intentionally, but I couldn’t get over the heroine acting and talking like a child. Her talking like a child took me out of the story and wasn’t relatable for me to engross myself in the story.
