I enjoyed your review. I live in Alaska, so Alaska Airlines has always been my go-to for flying. But my most recent experiences (December 2022, January 2023) have not been great. Their newer 737-900 and 737-MAX planes have been fitted with the slimline seat which would be fine (they aren't uncomfortable) but they have them crammed so close together in economy that my knees are about 3" away from the seat in front of me and I'm only 5'5". Looking at some of the taller men, their knees are touching the seat in front of them and they are forced to sit with their legs spread. The "personal item" space under the seat in front of the aisle seat is half the size of either of the other seats in a row under the new slimline configuration, and as a result my small laptop bag that I take as a personal item no longer fits. The seat is so cramped that I had to sit without stretching my legs out at all and for the first time ever my legs were quite swollen on landing. I always sit in the aisle seat, so I've been forced to make some new purchases so that my luggage and personal item will work with their new configuration. One other concern I have is that on the 737-900 the life vests are under the seat, and the reality is that the seat in front of me is so close that there is no physical way I could lean forward far enough to reach under my seat to get the life vest. That's a safety issue, I think. Inside the airport, their gates in Anchorage, Honolulu and Seattle are ridiculously over crowded with people standing all over because there's not enough seating. They never enforce carryon bag size limits (at least I've never once seen them stop someone with a monster bag and tell them they have to gate check) meaning that one person can bring a piece of luggage on board that is way too large and has to be stowed sideways in the overhead bin, leaving no space for the other two people. They also charge $30 to check a bag unless they require you to gate check. I do think the flight attendants and gate agents are fantastic, and the newer planes have very nice lighting and a "space ship" aesthetic. But the only comfortable seats on the plane are in premium class.

Living in the Pacific NW Alaska is always my first choice of airline. Great company with excellent customer service. But for flying coast to coast I do wish the seats had more cushion!

The seats have pretty good legroom at least.
