Right at the beginning of the game, you can see that the reason why Johnny didn't join with Cassie and Sonya in raiding Netherrealm castle was because he still got a sequel of "Ninja Mime" to film. But still, like you said, old Johnny remain a caring father and husband toward Cassie and Sonya. He only continue his filming career because simply it is his hobby.
